^15 (A)And he who is taken with the devoted things shall be burned with fire, he and all that he has, because he has ^(B)transgressed the covenant of the Lord, and because he has done ^(C)an outrageous thing in Israel.’”

⁷ The sons of Jacob had come in from the field as soon as they heard of it, and the men were indignant and ^(A)very angry, because he ^(B)had done an outrageous thing in Israel by lying with Jacob's daughter, ^(C)for such a thing must not be done.

³⁸ And Saul said, “Come here, all you leaders of the people, and know and see how this sin has arisen today. ³⁹ For ^(A)as the Lord lives who saves Israel, ^(B)though it be in Jonathan my son, he shall surely die.” But there was not a man among all the people who answered him.

^6 (A)So I took hold of my concubine and cut her in pieces and sent her throughout all the country of the inheritance of Israel, for they have committed abomination and ^(B)outrage in Israel.

²⁵ And Joshua said, “Why did you ^(A)bring trouble on us? The Lord brings trouble on you today.” And all Israel ^(B)stoned him with stones. ^(C)They burned them with fire and stoned them with stones. ²⁶ And they raised over him ^(D)a great heap of stones that remains to this day. Then ^(E)the Lord turned from his burning anger. Therefore, to this day the name of that place is called the Valley of Achor.^[a]

¹⁵ you shall surely put the inhabitants of that city to the sword, devoting it to destruction,^[a] all who are in it and its cattle, with the edge of the sword. ¹⁶ You shall gather all its spoil into the midst of its open square and ^(A)burn the city and all its spoil with fire, as a whole burnt offering to the Lord your God. It shall be a ^(B)heap forever. It shall not be built again.

¹³ As for me, where could I carry my shame? And as for you, you would be as one of ^(A)the outrageous fools in Israel. Now therefore, please speak to the king, for he will not withhold me from you.”

²¹ Then Saul said, ^(A)“I have sinned. Return, my son David, for I will no more do you harm, because my life was precious in your eyes this day. Behold, I have acted foolishly, and have made a great mistake.”

¹¹ Israel has sinned; they have ^(A)transgressed my covenant that I commanded them; they have taken some of the ^(B)devoted things; they have stolen and lied and put them among their own belongings.
