¹⁵ Whoever is caught with the devoted things^(A) shall be destroyed by fire,^(B) along with all that belongs to him.^(C) He has violated the covenant^(D) of the Lord and has done an outrageous thing in Israel!’”^(E)

⁷ Meanwhile, Jacob’s sons had come in from the fields as soon as they heard what had happened. They were shocked^(A) and furious,^(B) because Shechem had done an outrageous thing in^[a] Israel^(C) by sleeping with Jacob’s daughter—a thing that should not be done.^(D)

³⁸ Saul therefore said, “Come here, all you who are leaders of the army, and let us find out what sin has been committed^(A) today. ³⁹ As surely as the Lord who rescues Israel lives,^(B) even if the guilt lies with my son Jonathan,^(C) he must die.”^(D) But not one of them said a word.

⁶ I took my concubine, cut her into pieces and sent one piece to each region of Israel’s inheritance,^(A) because they committed this lewd and outrageous act^(B) in Israel.

¹³ What about me?^(A) Where could I get rid of my disgrace? And what about you? You would be like one of the wicked fools in Israel. Please speak to the king; he will not keep me from being married to you.”

²¹ Then Saul said, “I have sinned.^(A) Come back, David my son. Because you considered my life precious^(B) today, I will not try to harm you again. Surely I have acted like a fool and have been terribly wrong.”

²⁵ Joshua said, “Why have you brought this trouble^(A) on us? The Lord will bring trouble on you today.”

Then all Israel stoned him,^(B) and after they had stoned the rest, they burned them.^{(C) 26} Over Achan they heaped^(D) up a large pile of rocks, which remains to this day.^(E) Then the Lord turned from his fierce anger.^(F) Therefore that place has been called the Valley of Achor^[a](G) ever since.

¹⁵ you must certainly put to the sword all who live in that town. You must destroy it completely,^[a](A) both its people and its livestock.^{(B) 16} You are to gather all the plunder of the town into the middle of the public square and completely burn the town^(C) and all its plunder as a whole burnt offering to the Lord your God.^(D) That town is to remain a ruin^(E) forever, never to be rebuilt,
