⁹ Then the Lord said to Joshua, “Today I have rolled away the reproach of Egypt from you.” So the place has been called Gilgal^[a](A) to this day.

¹⁹ On the tenth day of the first month the people went up from the Jordan and camped at Gilgal^(A) on the eastern border of Jericho.

¹⁴ They said to them, “We can’t do such a thing; we can’t give our sister to a man who is not circumcised.^(A) That would be a disgrace to us.

²⁶ David asked the men standing near him, “What will be done for the man who kills this Philistine and removes this disgrace^(A) from Israel? Who is this uncircumcised^(B) Philistine that he should defy^(C) the armies of the living^(D) God?”

¹⁴ “Take the blasphemer outside the camp. All those who heard him are to lay their hands on his head, and the entire assembly is to stone him.^(A)

Jew and Gentile Reconciled Through Christ

¹¹ Therefore, remember that formerly^(A) you who are Gentiles by birth and called “uncircumcised” by those who call themselves “the circumcision” (which is done in the body by human hands)^(B)— ¹² remember that at that time you were separate from Christ, excluded from citizenship in Israel and foreigners^(C) to the covenants of the promise,^(D) without hope^(E) and without God in the world.

⁸ She did not give up the prostitution she began in Egypt,^(A) when during her youth men slept with her, caressed her virgin bosom and poured out their lust on her.^(B)

³ They became prostitutes in Egypt,^(A) engaging in prostitution^(B) from their youth.^(C) In that land their breasts were fondled and their virgin bosoms caressed.^(D)

⁷ And I said to them, “Each of you, get rid of the vile images^(A) you have set your eyes on, and do not defile yourselves with the idols^(B) of Egypt. I am the Lord your God.^(C)”

⁸ “‘But they rebelled against me and would not listen to me;^(D) they did not get rid of the vile images they had set their eyes on, nor did they forsake the idols of Egypt.^(E) So I said I would pour out my wrath on them and spend my anger against them in Egypt.^(F)
