(A)And now the Lord your God has given rest to your brothers, as he promised them. Therefore turn and go to your tents in the land where your possession lies, (B)which Moses the servant of the Lord gave you on the other side of the Jordan.

15 And Moses gave an inheritance to the tribe of the people of Reuben according to their clans. 16 So their territory was from Aroer, (A)which is on the edge of the Valley of the Arnon, and the city that is in the middle of the valley, and all the tableland by (B)Medeba; 17 with Heshbon, and all its cities that are in the tableland; (C)Dibon, and Bamoth-baal, and Beth-baal-meon, 18 (D)and Jahaz, and Kedemoth, and Mephaath, 19 and (E)Kiriathaim, and (F)Sibmah, and Zereth-shahar on the hill of the valley, 20 and (G)Beth-peor, and (H)the slopes of Pisgah, and (I)Beth-jeshimoth, 21 that is, (J)all the cities of the tableland, and all the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites, who reigned in Heshbon, (K)whom Moses defeated with (L)the leaders of Midian, Evi and Rekem and Zur and Hur and Reba, the princes of Sihon, who lived in the land. 22 (M)Balaam also, the son of Beor, the one who practiced divination, was killed with the sword by the people of Israel among the rest of their slain. 23 And the border of the people of Reuben was the Jordan as a boundary. This was the inheritance of the people of Reuben, according to their clans with their cities and villages.

24 Moses gave an inheritance also to the tribe of Gad, to the people of Gad, according to their clans. 25 (N)Their territory was Jazer, and all the cities of Gilead, and half the land of the Ammonites, to Aroer, which is east of (O)Rabbah, 26 and from Heshbon to Ramath-mizpeh and Betonim, and from (P)Mahanaim to the territory of Debir,[a] 27 and in the valley Beth-haram, Beth-nimrah, (Q)Succoth, and Zaphon, the rest of the kingdom of Sihon king of Heshbon, having the Jordan as a boundary, to the lower end of the Sea of (R)Chinnereth, eastward beyond the Jordan. 28 This is the inheritance of the people of Gad according to their clans, with their cities and villages.

29 And Moses gave an inheritance to the half-tribe of Manasseh. It was allotted to the half-tribe of the people of Manasseh according to their clans. 30 Their region extended from (S)Mahanaim, through all Bashan, the whole kingdom of Og king of Bashan, and all (T)the towns of Jair, which are in Bashan, sixty cities, 31 and half Gilead, and (U)Ashtaroth, and Edrei, the cities of the kingdom of Og in Bashan. These were allotted to the people of (V)Machir the son of Manasseh for the half of the people of Machir according to their clans.

32 These are the inheritances that Moses distributed (W)in the plains of Moab, beyond the Jordan east of Jericho. 33 (X)But to the tribe of Levi Moses gave no inheritance; the Lord God of Israel is their inheritance, (Y)just as he said to them.

The Inheritance West of the Jordan

14 These are the inheritances that the people of Israel received in the land of Canaan, which (Z)Eleazar the priest and Joshua the son of Nun and the heads of the fathers' houses of the tribes of the people of Israel gave them to inherit. Their inheritance was (AA)by lot, just as the Lord had commanded by the hand of Moses for the nine and one-half tribes. (AB)For Moses had given an inheritance to the two and one-half tribes beyond the Jordan, (AC)but to the Levites he gave no inheritance among them. For (AD)the people of Joseph were two tribes, Manasseh and Ephraim. And no portion was given to the Levites in the land, but only cities to dwell in, with their pasturelands for their livestock and their substance. The people of Israel did (AE)as the Lord commanded Moses; they allotted the land.

The Defeat of King Og

“Then we turned and went up the way to Bashan. And (A)Og the king of Bashan came out against us, he and all his people, to battle at (B)Edrei. But the Lord said to me, ‘Do not fear him, for I have given him and all his people and his land into your hand. And you shall do to him as you did to (C)Sihon the king of the Amorites, who lived at Heshbon.’ So the Lord our God gave into our hand Og also, the king of Bashan, and all his people, (D)and we struck him down until he had no survivor left. And we took all his cities at that time—there was not a city that we did not take from them—sixty cities, (E)the whole region of Argob, the kingdom of Og in Bashan. All these were cities fortified with high walls, gates, and bars, besides very many unwalled villages. And (F)we devoted them to destruction,[a] as we did to Sihon the king of Heshbon, devoting to destruction every (G)city, men, women, and children. But all the livestock and the spoil of the cities we took as our plunder. So we took the land at that time out of the hand of the two kings of the Amorites who were beyond the Jordan, from the Valley of the Arnon to Mount Hermon (the Sidonians call (H)Hermon (I)Sirion, while the Amorites call it (J)Senir), 10 all the cities of the (K)tableland and all Gilead and all Bashan, as far as (L)Salecah and Edrei, cities of the kingdom of Og in Bashan. 11 (For (M)only Og the king of Bashan was left of the remnant of (N)the Rephaim. Behold, his bed was a bed of iron. Is it not in (O)Rabbah of the Ammonites? Nine cubits[b] was its length, and four cubits its breadth, according to the (P)common cubit.[c])

12 “When we took possession of this land at that time, I gave to the Reubenites and the Gadites the territory beginning (Q)at Aroer, which is on the edge of the Valley of the Arnon, and half the hill country of Gilead with (R)its cities. 13 (S)The rest of Gilead, and all Bashan, the kingdom of Og, that is, (T)all the region of Argob, I gave to the half-tribe of Manasseh. (All that portion of Bashan is called the land of (U)Rephaim. 14 (V)Jair the Manassite took all the region of Argob, that is, Bashan, as far as the border of (W)the Geshurites and the Maacathites, and called the villages (X)after his own name, Havvoth-jair, as it is to this day.) 15 To Machir (Y)I gave Gilead, 16 and to the Reubenites (Z)and the Gadites I gave the territory from Gilead as far as the Valley of the Arnon, with the middle of the valley as a border, as far over as the river Jabbok, (AA)the border of the Ammonites; 17 the Arabah also, with the Jordan as the border, from (AB)Chinnereth as far as (AC)the Sea of the Arabah, (AD)the Salt Sea, under (AE)the slopes of Pisgah on the east.
