⁴⁴ The Lord gave them rest^(A) on every side, just as he had sworn to their ancestors. Not one of their enemies^(B) withstood them; the Lord gave all their enemies^(C) into their hands.^(D)

²³ So Joshua took the entire land,^(A) just as the Lord had directed Moses, and he gave it as an inheritance^(B) to Israel according to their tribal divisions.^(C) Then the land had rest^(D) from war.^(E)

³ The Lord your God himself will cross^(A) over ahead of you.^(B) He will destroy these nations^(C) before you, and you will take possession of their land. Joshua also will cross^(D) over ahead of you, as the Lord said. ⁴ And the Lord will do to them what he did to Sihon and Og,^(E) the kings of the Amorites, whom he destroyed along with their land. ⁵ The Lord will deliver^(F) them to you, and you must do to them all that I have commanded you.

⁹ There remains, then, a Sabbath-rest for the people of God;

²² The Lord your God will drive out those nations before you, little by little.^(A) You will not be allowed to eliminate them all at once, or the wild animals will multiply around you. ²³ But the Lord your God will deliver them over to you, throwing them into great confusion until they are destroyed.^{(B) 24} He will give their kings^(C) into your hand,^(D) and you will wipe out their names from under heaven. No one will be able to stand up against you;^(E) you will destroy them.^(F)

⁹ So the Reubenites, the Gadites and the half-tribe of Manasseh left the Israelites at Shiloh^(A) in Canaan to return to Gilead,^(B) their own land, which they had acquired in accordance with the command of the Lord through Moses.

⁴ Now that the Lord your God has given them rest^(A) as he promised, return to your homes^(B) in the land that Moses the servant of the Lord gave you on the other side of the Jordan.^(C)

¹⁵ until the Lord gives them rest, as he has done for you, and until they too have taken possession of the land the Lord your God is giving them. After that, you may go back and occupy your own land, which Moses the servant of the Lord gave you east of the Jordan toward the sunrise.”^(A)

¹³ “Remember the command that Moses the servant of the Lord gave you after he said, ‘The Lord your God will give you rest^(A) by giving you this land.’
