⁵ At dusk, when it was time to close the city gate,^(A) they left. I don’t know which way they went. Go after them quickly. You may catch up with them.”^(B)

²⁵ On no day will its gates^(A) ever be shut,^(B) for there will be no night there.^(C)

¹² Fruit trees of all kinds will grow on both banks of the river.^(A) Their leaves will not wither, nor will their fruit^(B) fail. Every month they will bear fruit, because the water from the sanctuary^(C) flows to them. Their fruit will serve for food and their leaves for healing.^(D)”

The River From the Temple

47 The man brought me back to the entrance to the temple, and I saw water^(A) coming out from under the threshold of the temple toward the east (for the temple faced east). The water was coming down from under the south side of the temple, south of the altar.^{(B) 2} He then brought me out through the north gate^(C) and led me around the outside to the outer gate facing east, and the water was trickling from the south side.

¹⁹ When evening shadows fell on the gates of Jerusalem before the Sabbath,^(A) I ordered the doors to be shut and not opened until the Sabbath was over. I stationed some of my own men at the gates so that no load could be brought in on the Sabbath day.

⁷ Someone might argue, “If my falsehood enhances God’s truthfulness and so increases his glory,^(A) why am I still condemned as a sinner?”^{(B) 8} Why not say—as some slanderously claim that we say—“Let us do evil that good may result”?^(C) Their condemnation is just!

⁷ So the men set out in pursuit of the spies on the road that leads to the fords of the Jordan,^(A) and as soon as the pursuers^(B) had gone out, the gate was shut.
