¹⁸ unless, when we enter the land, you have tied this scarlet cord^(A) in the window^(B) through which you let us down, and unless you have brought your father and mother, your brothers and all your family^(C) into your house.

²³ So the young men who had done the spying went in and brought out Rahab, her father and mother, her brothers and sisters and all who belonged to her.^(A) They brought out her entire family and put them in a place outside the camp of Israel.

²¹ “Agreed,” she replied. “Let it be as you say.”

So she sent them away, and they departed. And she tied the scarlet cord^(A) in the window.^(B)

¹² “Now then, please swear to me^(A) by the Lord that you will show kindness^(B) to my family, because I have shown kindness to you. Give me a sure sign^{(C) 13} that you will spare the lives of my father and mother, my brothers and sisters, and all who belong to them^(D)—and that you will save us from death.”

¹⁹ When Moses had proclaimed^(A) every command of the law to all the people, he took the blood of calves,^(B) together with water, scarlet wool and branches of hyssop, and sprinkled the scroll and all the people.^(C)

³³ So I sent for you immediately, and it was good of you to come. Now we are all here in the presence of God to listen to everything the Lord has commanded you to tell us.”

¹² The two men said to Lot, “Do you have anyone else here—sons-in-law, sons or daughters, or anyone else in the city who belongs to you?^(A) Get them out of here, ¹³ because we^(B) are going to destroy this place. The outcry to the Lord against its people is so great^(C) that he has sent us to destroy it.”^(D)

¹⁴ So Lot went out and spoke to his sons-in-law, who were pledged to marry^[a] his daughters. He said, “Hurry and get out of this place, because the Lord is about to destroy the city!^(E)” But his sons-in-law thought he was joking.^(F)

¹⁵ With the coming of dawn, the angels urged Lot, saying, “Hurry! Take your wife and your two daughters who are here, or you will be swept away^(G) when the city is punished.^(H)”

¹⁶ When he hesitated, the men grasped his hand and the hands of his wife and of his two daughters^(I) and led them safely out of the city, for the Lord was merciful to them.^{(J) 17} As soon as they had brought them out, one of them said, “Flee for your lives!^(K) Don’t look back,^(L) and don’t stop anywhere in the plain!^(M) Flee to the mountains^(N) or you will be swept away!”

¹⁶ May the Lord show mercy to the household of Onesiphorus,^(A) because he often refreshed me and was not ashamed^(B) of my chains.^(C)

¹⁴ He will bring you a message^(A) through which you and all your household^(B) will be saved.’
