⁸ As the men started on their way to map out the land, Joshua instructed them, “Go and make a survey of the land and write a description of it.^(A) Then return to me, and I will cast lots for you here at Shiloh^(B) in the presence of the Lord.”

¹⁹ Let us therefore make every effort to do what leads to peace^(A) and to mutual edification.^(B)

¹⁰ Joshua then cast lots^(A) for them in Shiloh in the presence^(B) of the Lord, and there he distributed the land to the Israelites according to their tribal divisions.^(C)

²⁴ Then they prayed,^(A) “Lord, you know everyone’s heart.^(B) Show us^(C) which of these two you have chosen ²⁵ to take over this apostolic ministry, which Judas left to go where he belongs.” ²⁶ Then they cast lots, and the lot fell to Matthias; so he was added to the eleven apostles.^(D)

⁴¹ Then Saul prayed to the Lord, the God of Israel, “Why have you not answered your servant today? If the fault is in me or my son Jonathan, respond with Urim, but if the men of Israel are at fault,^[a] respond with Thummim.” Jonathan and Saul were taken by lot, and the men were cleared.

⁶ After you have written descriptions of the seven parts of the land, bring them here to me and I will cast lots^(A) for you in the presence of the Lord our God.

Division of the Rest of the Land

18 The whole assembly of the Israelites gathered at Shiloh^(A) and set up the tent of meeting^(B) there. The country was brought under their control,

Allotment for Judah^(A)

15 The allotment for the tribe of Judah, according to its clans, extended down to the territory of Edom,^(B) to the Desert of Zin^(C) in the extreme south.^(D)

Division of the Land West of the Jordan

14 Now these are the areas the Israelites received as an inheritance^(A) in the land of Canaan, which Eleazar^(B) the priest, Joshua son of Nun and the heads of the tribal clans of Israel^(C) allotted^(D) to them.^{(E) 2} Their inheritances were assigned by lot^(F) to the nine and a half tribes,^(G) as the Lord had commanded through Moses.
