¹² Yet ^(A)the children of Manasseh could not drive out the inhabitants of those cities, but the Canaanites were determined to dwell in that land.

Incomplete Conquest of the Land

^27 (A)However, Manasseh did not drive out the inhabitants of Beth Shean and its villages, or ^(B)Taanach and its villages, or the inhabitants of ^(C)Dor and its villages, or the inhabitants of Ibleam and its villages, or the inhabitants of Megiddo and its villages; for the Canaanites were determined to dwell in that land. ²⁸ And it came to pass, when Israel was strong, that they put the Canaanites ^[a]under tribute, but did not completely drive them out.

^29 (A)I will not drive them out from before you in one year, lest the land become desolate and the beasts of the field become too numerous for you. ³⁰ Little by little I will drive them out from before you, until you have increased, and you inherit the land. ³¹ And ^(B)I will set your ^[a]bounds from the Red Sea to the sea, Philistia, and from the desert to the ^[b]River. For I will ^(C)deliver the inhabitants of the land into your hand, and you shall drive them out before you. ^32 (D)You shall make no ^[c]covenant with them, nor with their gods. ³³ They shall not dwell in your land, lest they make you sin against Me. For if you serve their gods, ^(E)it will surely be a snare to you.”

^12 (A)Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body, that you should obey it in its lusts. ¹³ And do not present your ^(B)members as ^[a]instruments of unrighteousness to sin, but ^(C)present yourselves to God as being alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God. ¹⁴ For ^(D)sin shall not have dominion over you, for you are not under law but under grace.

^10 (A)And they did not drive out the Canaanites who dwelt in Gezer; but the Canaanites dwell among the Ephraimites to this day and have become forced laborers.

⁶³ As for the Jebusites, the inhabitants of Jerusalem, ^(A)the children of Judah could not drive them out; ^(B)but the Jebusites dwell with the children of Judah at Jerusalem to this day.

^52 (A)then you shall drive out all the inhabitants of the land from before you, destroy all their engraved stones, destroy all their molded images, and demolish all their ^[a]high places; ⁵³ you shall dispossess the inhabitants of the land and dwell in it, for I have given you the land to ^(B)possess. ⁵⁴ And ^(C)you shall divide the land by lot as an inheritance among your families; to the larger you shall give a larger inheritance, and to the smaller you shall give a smaller inheritance; there everyone’s inheritance shall be whatever falls to him by lot. You shall inherit according to the tribes of your fathers. ⁵⁵ But if you do not drive out the inhabitants of the land from before you, then it shall be that those whom you let remain shall be ^(D)irritants in your eyes and thorns in your sides, and they shall harass you in the land where you dwell. ⁵⁶ Moreover it shall be that I will do to you as I thought to do to them.’ ”
