¹⁰ They did not dislodge the Canaanites living in Gezer; to this day the Canaanites live among the people of Ephraim but are required to do forced labor.^(A)

²⁹ Nor did Ephraim^(A) drive out the Canaanites living in Gezer,^(B) but the Canaanites continued to live there among them.^(C)

¹⁶ (Pharaoh king of Egypt had attacked and captured Gezer. He had set it on fire. He killed its Canaanite inhabitants and then gave it as a wedding gift to his daughter,^(A) Solomon’s wife.

Driving Out the Nations

7 When the Lord your God brings you into the land you are entering to possess^(A) and drives out before you many nations^(B)—the Hittites,^(C) Girgashites,^(D) Amorites,^(E) Canaanites, Perizzites,^(F) Hivites^(G) and Jebusites,^(H) seven nations larger and stronger than you— ² and when the Lord your God has delivered^(I) them over to you and you have defeated them, then you must destroy^(J) them totally.^[a](K) Make no treaty^(L) with them, and show them no mercy.^(M)

¹³ However, when the Israelites grew stronger, they subjected the Canaanites to forced labor but did not drive them out completely.^(A)

²¹ Solomon conscripted the descendants^(A) of all these peoples remaining in the land—whom the Israelites could not exterminate^[a](B)—to serve as slave labor,^(C) as it is to this day.

⁵² drive out all the inhabitants of the land before you. Destroy all their carved images and their cast idols, and demolish all their high places.^{(A) 53} Take possession of the land and settle in it, for I have given you the land to possess.^{(B) 54} Distribute the land by lot,^(C) according to your clans.^(D) To a larger group give a larger inheritance, and to a smaller group a smaller one.^(E) Whatever falls to them by lot will be theirs. Distribute it according to your ancestral tribes.^(F)

⁵⁵ “‘But if you do not drive out the inhabitants of the land, those you allow to remain will become barbs in your eyes and thorns^(G) in your sides. They will give you trouble in the land where you will live.

⁶³ Judah could not^(A) dislodge the Jebusites^(B), who were living in Jerusalem;^(C) to this day the Jebusites live there with the people of Judah.^(D)
