⁴⁰ So Joshua subdued the whole region, including the hill country, the Negev,^(A) the western foothills and the mountain slopes,^(B) together with all their kings.^(C) He left no survivors. He totally destroyed all who breathed, just as the Lord, the God of Israel, had commanded.^(D)

² and when the Lord your God has delivered^(A) them over to you and you have defeated them, then you must destroy^(B) them totally.^[a](C) Make no treaty^(D) with them, and show them no mercy.^{(E) 3} Do not intermarry with them.^(F) Do not give your daughters to their sons or take their daughters for your sons, ⁴ for they will turn your children away from following me to serve other gods,^(G) and the Lord’s anger will burn against you and will quickly destroy^(H) you. ⁵ This is what you are to do to them: Break down their altars, smash their sacred stones, cut down their Asherah poles^[b](I) and burn their idols in the fire.^{(J) 6} For you are a people holy^(K) to the Lord your God.^(L) The Lord your God has chosen^(M) you out of all the peoples on the face of the earth to be his people, his treasured possession.^(N)

⁷ The Lord did not set his affection on you and choose you because you were more numerous^(O) than other peoples, for you were the fewest^(P) of all peoples.^{(Q) 8} But it was because the Lord loved^(R) you and kept the oath he swore^(S) to your ancestors that he brought you out with a mighty hand^(T) and redeemed^(U) you from the land of slavery,^(V) from the power of Pharaoh king of Egypt. ⁹ Know therefore that the Lord your God is God;^(W) he is the faithful God,^(X) keeping his covenant of love^(Y) to a thousand generations^(Z) of those who love him and keep his commandments.^{(AA) 10} But

¹¹ Therefore, take care to follow the commands, decrees and laws I give you today.

¹² If you pay attention to these laws and are careful to follow them, then the Lord your God will keep his covenant of love with you, as he swore to your ancestors.^{(AC) 13} He will love you and bless you^(AD) and increase your numbers.^(AE) He will bless the fruit of your womb,^(AF) the crops of your land—your grain, new wine^(AG) and olive oil^(AH)—the calves of your herds and the lambs of your flocks in the land he swore to your ancestors to give you.^{(AI) 14} You will be blessed more than any other people; none of your men or women will be childless, nor will any of your livestock be without young.^{(AJ) 15} The Lord will keep you free from every disease.^(AK) He will not inflict on you the horrible diseases you knew in Egypt,^(AL) but he will inflict them on all who hate you.^{(AM) 16} You must destroy all the peoples the Lord your God gives over to you.^(AN) Do not look on them with pity^(AO) and do not serve their gods,^(AP) for that will be a snare^(AQ) to you.

⁷ and give relief to you who are troubled, and to us as well. This will happen when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven^(A) in blazing fire^(B) with his powerful angels.^{(C) 8} He will punish^(D) those who do not know God^(E) and do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus.^{(F) 9} They will be punished with everlasting destruction^(G) and shut out from the presence of the Lord^(H) and from the glory of his might^(I)

²⁹ As soon as he began to reign, he killed Jeroboam’s whole family.^(A) He did not leave Jeroboam anyone that breathed, but destroyed them all, according to the word of the Lord given through his servant Ahijah the Shilonite.

³⁷ They took the city and put it to the sword, together with its king, its villages and everyone^(A) in it. They left no survivors. Just as at Eglon, they totally destroyed it and everyone in it.

³⁵ They captured it that same day and put it to the sword and totally destroyed everyone in it, just as they had done to Lachish.

²⁴ They answered Joshua, “Your servants were clearly told^(A) how the Lord your God had commanded his servant Moses to give you the whole land and to wipe out all its inhabitants from before you. So we feared for our lives because of you, and that is why we did this.

²⁷ But Israel did carry off for themselves the livestock and plunder of this city, as the Lord had instructed Joshua.^(A)
