30 But (A)Sihon the king of (B)Heshbon would not let us pass by him, for the Lord your God (C)hardened his spirit and made his heart obstinate, that he might give him into your hand, as he is this day. 31 And the Lord said to me, ‘Behold, I have begun to give Sihon and his land over to you. Begin to take possession, that you may occupy his land.’ 32 Then (D)Sihon came out against us, he and all his people, to battle at Jahaz. 33 And (E)the Lord our God gave him over to us, and (F)we defeated him and his sons and all his people. 34 And we captured all his cities at that time and devoted to destruction[a] every (G)city, men, women, and children. We left no survivors. 35 Only the livestock we took as spoil for ourselves, with the plunder of the cities that we captured. 36 (H)From Aroer, which is on the edge of the Valley of the Arnon, and from (I)the city that is in the valley, as far as Gilead, there was not a city too high for us. (J)The Lord our God gave all into our hands. 37 Only to the land of the sons of Ammon you did not draw near, that is, to all the banks of the river (K)Jabbok and the cities of the hill country, whatever the Lord our God had forbidden us.

The Defeat of King Og

“Then we turned and went up the way to Bashan. And (L)Og the king of Bashan came out against us, he and all his people, to battle at (M)Edrei. But the Lord said to me, ‘Do not fear him, for I have given him and all his people and his land into your hand. And you shall do to him as you did to (N)Sihon the king of the Amorites, who lived at Heshbon.’ So the Lord our God gave into our hand Og also, the king of Bashan, and all his people, (O)and we struck him down until he had no survivor left. And we took all his cities at that time—there was not a city that we did not take from them—sixty cities, (P)the whole region of Argob, the kingdom of Og in Bashan. All these were cities fortified with high walls, gates, and bars, besides very many unwalled villages. And (Q)we devoted them to destruction,[b] as we did to Sihon the king of Heshbon, devoting to destruction every (R)city, men, women, and children. But all the livestock and the spoil of the cities we took as our plunder.

30 But Sihon king of Heshbon refused to let us pass through. For the Lord(A) your God had made his spirit stubborn(B) and his heart obstinate(C) in order to give him into your hands,(D) as he has now done.

31 The Lord said to me, “See, I have begun to deliver Sihon and his country over to you. Now begin to conquer and possess his land.”(E)

32 When Sihon and all his army came out to meet us in battle(F) at Jahaz, 33 the Lord our God delivered(G) him over to us and we struck him down,(H) together with his sons and his whole army. 34 At that time we took all his towns and completely destroyed[a](I) them—men, women and children. We left no survivors. 35 But the livestock(J) and the plunder(K) from the towns we had captured we carried off for ourselves. 36 From Aroer(L) on the rim of the Arnon Gorge, and from the town in the gorge, even as far as Gilead,(M) not one town was too strong for us. The Lord our God gave(N) us all of them. 37 But in accordance with the command of the Lord our God,(O) you did not encroach on any of the land of the Ammonites,(P) neither the land along the course of the Jabbok(Q) nor that around the towns in the hills.

Defeat of Og King of Bashan

Next we turned and went up along the road toward Bashan, and Og king of Bashan(R) with his whole army marched out to meet us in battle at Edrei.(S) The Lord said to me, “Do not be afraid(T) of him, for I have delivered him into your hands, along with his whole army and his land. Do to him what you did to Sihon king of the Amorites, who reigned in Heshbon.”

So the Lord our God also gave into our hands Og king of Bashan and all his army. We struck them down,(U) leaving no survivors.(V) At that time we took all his cities.(W) There was not one of the sixty cities that we did not take from them—the whole region of Argob, Og’s kingdom(X) in Bashan.(Y) All these cities were fortified with high walls and with gates and bars, and there were also a great many unwalled villages. We completely destroyed[b] them, as we had done with Sihon king of Heshbon, destroying[c](Z) every city—men, women and children. But all the livestock(AA) and the plunder from their cities we carried off for ourselves.

24 (A)And Israel defeated him with the edge of the sword and took possession of his land from the Arnon to the (B)Jabbok, as far as to the Ammonites, for the border of the Ammonites was strong. 25 And Israel took all these cities, and Israel settled in all the cities of the Amorites, in Heshbon, and in all its villages. 26 For Heshbon was the city of Sihon the king of the Amorites, who had fought against the former king of Moab and taken all his land out of his hand, as far as the Arnon. 27 Therefore the (C)ballad singers say,

“Come to (D)Heshbon, let it be built;
    let the city of Sihon be established.
28 For (E)fire came out from (F)Heshbon,
    flame from the city of Sihon.
It devoured (G)Ar of Moab,
    and swallowed[a] the heights of the Arnon.
29 (H)Woe to you, O Moab!
    You are undone, O people of (I)Chemosh!
He has made his sons fugitives,
    and his daughters captives,
    to an Amorite king, Sihon.
30 So we overthrew them;
    Heshbon, as far as (J)Dibon, perished;
    and we laid waste as far as Nophah;
    fire spread as far as (K)Medeba.”[b]

King Og Defeated

31 Thus Israel lived in the land of the Amorites. 32 And Moses sent to spy out (L)Jazer, and they captured its villages and dispossessed the Amorites who were there. 33 Then they turned and went up by the way to Bashan. And Og the king of Bashan came out against them, he and all his people, to battle (M)at Edrei. 34 (N)But the Lord said to Moses, “Do not fear him, for I have given him into your hand, and all his people, and his land. And (O)you shall do to him as you did to Sihon king of the Amorites, who lived at Heshbon.” 35 So they defeated him and his sons and all his people, until he had no survivor left. And they possessed his land.

24 Israel, however, put him to the sword(A) and took over his land(B) from the Arnon to the Jabbok,(C) but only as far as the Ammonites,(D) because their border was fortified. 25 Israel captured all the cities of the Amorites(E) and occupied them,(F) including Heshbon(G) and all its surrounding settlements. 26 Heshbon was the city of Sihon(H) king of the Amorites,(I) who had fought against the former king of Moab(J) and had taken from him all his land as far as the Arnon.(K)

27 That is why the poets say:

“Come to Heshbon and let it be rebuilt;
    let Sihon’s city be restored.

28 “Fire went out from Heshbon,
    a blaze from the city of Sihon.(L)
It consumed(M) Ar(N) of Moab,

29 Woe to you, Moab!(P)
    You are destroyed, people of Chemosh!(Q)
He has given up his sons as fugitives(R)

    to Sihon king of the Amorites.

30 “But we have overthrown them;
    Heshbon’s dominion has been destroyed all the way to Dibon.(T)
We have demolished them as far as Nophah,
    which extends to Medeba.(U)

31 So Israel settled in the land of the Amorites.(V)

32 After Moses had sent spies(W) to Jazer,(X) the Israelites captured its surrounding settlements and drove out the Amorites who were there. 33 Then they turned and went up along the road toward Bashan(Y),(Z) and Og king of Bashan and his whole army marched out to meet them in battle at Edrei.(AA)
