The Lord's Mercy Remembered

I will recount the steadfast love of the Lord,
    the praises of the Lord,
according to all that the Lord has granted us,
    (A)and the great goodness to the house of Israel
that he has granted them according to his compassion,
    according to the abundance of his steadfast love.
For he said, “Surely they are my people,
    children who will not deal falsely.”
    And he became their Savior.
(B)In all their affliction he was afflicted,[a]
    and the angel of his presence saved them;
(C)in his love and in his pity he redeemed them;
    (D)he lifted them up and carried them all the days of old.

10 (E)But they rebelled
    (F)and grieved his Holy Spirit;
therefore he turned to be their enemy,
    and himself fought against them.
11 Then he remembered (G)the days of old,
    of Moses and his people.[b]
(H)Where is he who brought them up out of the sea
    with the shepherds of his flock?
Where is he who put in the midst of them
    his Holy Spirit,
12 who caused his glorious arm
    to go at the right hand of Moses,
(I)who divided the waters before them
    (J)to make for himself an everlasting name,
13     who led them through the depths?
Like a horse in the desert,
    they did not stumble.
14 Like livestock that go down into the valley,
    (K)the Spirit of the Lord gave them rest.
So you led your people,
    (L)to make for yourself a glorious name.

Praise and Prayer

I will tell of the kindnesses(A) of the Lord,
    the deeds for which he is to be praised,
    according to all the Lord has done for us—
yes, the many good things(B)
    he has done for Israel,
    according to his compassion(C) and many kindnesses.
He said, “Surely they are my people,(D)
    children who will be true to me”;
    and so he became their Savior.(E)
In all their distress he too was distressed,
    and the angel(F) of his presence(G) saved them.[a]
In his love and mercy he redeemed(H) them;
    he lifted them up and carried(I) them
    all the days of old.(J)
10 Yet they rebelled(K)
    and grieved his Holy Spirit.(L)
So he turned and became their enemy(M)
    and he himself fought(N) against them.

11 Then his people recalled[b] the days of old,
    the days of Moses and his people—
where is he who brought them through the sea,(O)
    with the shepherd of his flock?(P)
Where is he who set
    his Holy Spirit(Q) among them,
12 who sent his glorious arm(R) of power
    to be at Moses’ right hand,
who divided the waters(S) before them,
    to gain for himself everlasting renown,(T)
13 who led(U) them through the depths?(V)
Like a horse in open country,
    they did not stumble;(W)
14 like cattle that go down to the plain,
    they were given rest(X) by the Spirit of the Lord.
This is how you guided your people
    to make for yourself a glorious name.

(A)And I sent Moses and Aaron, (B)and I plagued Egypt with what I did in the midst of it, and (C)afterward I brought you out.

“‘Then (D)I brought your fathers out of Egypt, and (E)you came to the sea. (F)And the Egyptians pursued your fathers with chariots and horsemen to the Red Sea. (G)And when they cried to the Lord, (H)he put darkness between you and the Egyptians (I)and made the sea come upon them and cover them; (J)and your eyes saw what I did in Egypt. (K)And you lived in the wilderness a long time. Then I brought you to the land of the Amorites, who lived on the other side of the Jordan. (L)They fought with you, and I gave them into your hand, and you took possession of their land, and I destroyed them before you. (M)Then Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab, arose and fought against Israel. (N)And he sent and invited Balaam the son of Beor to curse you, 10 (O)but I would not listen to Balaam. (P)Indeed, he blessed you. So I delivered you out of his hand. 11 (Q)And you went over the Jordan and came to Jericho, (R)and the leaders of Jericho fought against you, and also (S)the Amorites, the Perizzites, the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Girgashites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites. And I gave them into your hand. 12 And I sent (T)the hornet before you, which drove them out before you, the two kings of the Amorites; it was (U)not by your sword or by your bow. 13 I gave you a land on which you had not labored (V)and cities that you had not built, and you dwell in them. You eat the fruit of vineyards and olive orchards that you did not plant.’
