Jonas foge do Senhor
1 O Senhor enviou uma mensagem a Jonas, filho de Amitai. 2 “Vai à grande cidade de Nínive e prega contra ela, porque a sua maldade subiu até a minha presença!”
3 Mas Jonas resolveu ausentar-se para longe do Senhor. Desceu até à costa, até ao porto de Jope, onde achou um navio que partia para Társis. Comprou uma passagem, entrou no barco seguindo para Társis, fugindo assim do Senhor.
4 Enquanto o barco navegava, o Senhor fez levantar-se uma terrível ventania e desencadear-se uma tempestade tal que o navio estava a ponto de se despedaçar. 5 Temendo pelas suas vidas, os marinheiros desesperados gritavam cada um pelo seu deus e atiravam pela borda fora o carregamento, para tornar mais leve a embarcação. Enquanto isto se passava, Jonas dormia profundamente no porão do barco.
6 O capitão mandou chamá-lo: “O que é que se passa contigo? Estás a dormir numa situação destas? Clama também ao teu Deus, para ver se tem misericórdia de nós e nos salva!”
7 A tripulação resolveu tirar à sorte, a fim de verificarem quem é que, entre eles, ofendera os deuses e provocara tamanho temporal. E a sorte recaiu sobre Jonas.
8 “Que foi que fizeste”, perguntaram-lhe, “para que este furacão tremendo caísse sobre nós? Quem és tu? O que fazes? Donde é que vens? De que nacionalidade és?”
9 “Sou hebreu e temo o Senhor, o Deus dos céus, que fez a terra e os mares.” 10 Depois contou-lhes que estava a fugir do Senhor.
Os homens ficaram aterrorizados: “Oh! E porque é que fizeste uma coisa destas? 11 O que é que havemos de te fazer para acabar com este temporal?” E o tempo piorava assustadoramente.
12 “Deitem-me ao mar e tudo ficará calmo outra vez. Porque sei que esta tempestade aconteceu por minha causa.”
13 Entretanto, os remadores tentavam em vão levar o barco para a costa; a tormenta era tal que se tornava impossível lutar contra ela. 14 Então clamaram ao Senhor: “Ó Senhor, não nos tires a nós a vida, por causa do pecado deste homem! Não nos tornes culpados de derramar sangue inocente. Afinal, Senhor, tu procedeste o que te aprouve.”
15 Pegaram depois em Jonas, lançaram-no pela borda fora e tudo se acalmou!
16 Aquela gente temeu imenso o Senhor; ofereceu-lhe sacrifícios e fez votos de o servir.
17 No entanto, o Senhor preparou um grande peixe para que engolisse Jonas e este ficou vivo no interior do peixe três dias e três noites.

1 Now the word of the Lord came unto Jonah the son of Amittai, saying,
2 Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and cry against it; for their wickedness is come up before me.
3 But Jonah rose up to flee unto Tarshish from the presence of the Lord, and went down to Joppa; and he found a ship going to Tarshish: so he paid the fare thereof, and went down into it, to go with them unto Tarshish from the presence of the Lord.
4 But the Lord sent out a great wind into the sea, and there was a mighty tempest in the sea, so that the ship was like to be broken.
5 Then the mariners were afraid, and cried every man unto his god, and cast forth the wares that were in the ship into the sea, to lighten it of them. But Jonah was gone down into the sides of the ship; and he lay, and was fast asleep.
6 So the shipmaster came to him, and said unto him, What meanest thou, O sleeper? arise, call upon thy God, if so be that God will think upon us, that we perish not.
7 And they said every one to his fellow, Come, and let us cast lots, that we may know for whose cause this evil is upon us. So they cast lots, and the lot fell upon Jonah.
8 Then said they unto him, Tell us, we pray thee, for whose cause this evil is upon us; What is thine occupation? and whence comest thou? what is thy country? and of what people art thou?
9 And he said unto them, I am an Hebrew; and I fear the Lord, the God of heaven, which hath made the sea and the dry land.
10 Then were the men exceedingly afraid, and said unto him. Why hast thou done this? For the men knew that he fled from the presence of the Lord, because he had told them.
11 Then said they unto him, What shall we do unto thee, that the sea may be calm unto us? for the sea wrought, and was tempestuous.
12 And he said unto them, Take me up, and cast me forth into the sea; so shall the sea be calm unto you: for I know that for my sake this great tempest is upon you.
13 Nevertheless the men rowed hard to bring it to the land; but they could not: for the sea wrought, and was tempestuous against them.
14 Wherefore they cried unto the Lord, and said, We beseech thee, O Lord, we beseech thee, let us not perish for this man's life, and lay not upon us innocent blood: for thou, O Lord, hast done as it pleased thee.
15 So they took up Jonah, and cast him forth into the sea: and the sea ceased from her raging.
16 Then the men feared the Lord exceedingly, and offered a sacrifice unto the Lord, and made vows.
17 Now the Lord had prepared a great fish to swallow up Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.

约拿违命
1 耶和华的话临到亚米太的儿子约拿，说： 2 “起来！到尼尼微大城去，警告其中的居民，因为他们的恶行已经达到我面前。” 3 可是约拿却起来，要逃往他施去，躲避耶和华；他下到约帕，找到了一只要开往他施去的船；他给了钱，就上船（“上船”原文作“下船”），要和他们同往他施去，离开耶和华。
海起大风
4 但是耶和华在海上忽然刮起大风，于是海中狂风大作，船几乎要破裂了。 5 水手都很惧怕，各人向自己的神大声呼求；他们为了减轻船的重量，就把船上的东西拋在海里，可是约拿却下了船舱，躺着熟睡了。 6 船长走到他面前，对他说：“你怎么啦！睡得那么熟？快起来，求告你的 神吧！或者 神会记念我们，使我们不至于丧命！”
约拿受罚
7 水手就彼此说：“来吧！让我们抽签，好知道这场灾祸临到我们，是因谁的缘故。”于是他们抽签，结果抽中了约拿。 8 他们就对约拿说：“请告诉我们，这场灾祸临到我们，是因谁的缘故？你是作甚么的？你从哪里来？你是哪一国的人？哪一族的人？” 9 他回答说：“我是希伯来人，我敬畏耶和华天上的 神，就是那创造海洋和陆地的。”
10 众人就大大惧怕，对他说：“你为甚么这样作呢？（“你为甚么这样作呢？”或译：“你作的是甚么呢？”）”那些人知道他躲避耶和华，原来约拿告诉了他们。 11 因为海浪越来越汹涌，他们又对他说：“我们该怎样处置你，才能叫海浪平静呢？” 12 他回答说：“你们把我抬起来，投在海里，海浪就会平静，因为我知道，这场大风暴临到你们，是为了我的缘故。” 13 那些人虽然破浪挣扎，要把船靠岸，却是不能，因为海浪不断汹涌扑来。 14 他们就呼求耶和华，说：“耶和华啊！我们恳求你，不要因这人叫我们丧命；不要把无辜人的血归在我们身上，因为你耶和华是照自己所喜悦的行事。”
15 于是他们把约拿抬起来，投在海里，怒涛就平息了。 16 那些人就大大敬畏耶和华，向他献祭和许愿。
17 耶和华却安排了一条大鱼，把约拿吞下。约拿就在鱼腹中三日三夜。（本节在《马索拉文本》为2:1）
