⁹ But God said to Jonah, ^(A)“Do you do well to be angry for the plant?” And he said, “Yes, I do well to be angry, angry enough to die.”

¹⁰ For ^(A)godly grief produces a repentance that leads to salvation without regret, whereas ^(B)worldly grief produces death.

¹⁶ And ^(A)when she pressed him hard with her words day after day, and urged him, his soul was vexed to death.

⁵ but ^(A)for Cain and his offering he had no regard. So Cain was very angry, and his face fell. ⁶ The Lord said to Cain, “Why are you angry, and why has your face fallen? ^7 (B)If you do well, will you not be accepted?^[a] And if you do not do well, sin is crouching at the door. ^(C)Its desire is contrary to^[b] you, but you must rule over it.”

⁸ Cain spoke to Abel his brother.^[c] And when they were in the field, Cain rose up against his brother Abel and ^(D)killed him. ⁹ Then the Lord said to Cain, “Where is Abel your brother?” He said, ^(E)“I do not know; am I my brother's keeper?” ¹⁰ And the Lord said, “What have you done? The voice of your brother's blood ^(F)is crying to me from the ground. ¹¹ And now ^(G)you are cursed from the ground, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother's blood from your hand. ¹² When you work the ground, it shall no longer yield to you its strength. You shall be a fugitive and a wanderer on the earth.” ¹³ Cain said to the Lord, “My ^(H)punishment is greater than I can bear.^{[d] 14} Behold, ^(I)you have driven me today away from the ground, and ^(J)from your face I shall be hidden. I shall be a fugitive and a wanderer on the earth, ^(K)and whoever finds me will kill me.”

⁶ And in those days ^(A)people will seek death and will not find it. They will long to die, but death will flee from them.

³⁸ Then he said to them, ^(A)“My soul is very sorrowful, even to death; remain here, and ^(B)watch^[a] with me.”
