3 And the word of the Lord came unto Jonah the second time, saying,
2 Arise, go unto Nineveh, that great city, and preach unto it the preaching that I bid thee.
3 So Jonah arose, and went unto Nineveh, according to the word of the Lord. Now Nineveh was an exceeding great city of three days' journey.
4 And Jonah began to enter into the city a day's journey, and he cried, and said, Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown.
5 So the people of Nineveh believed God, and proclaimed a fast, and put on sackcloth, from the greatest of them even to the least of them.
6 For word came unto the king of Nineveh, and he arose from his throne, and he laid his robe from him, and covered him with sackcloth, and sat in ashes.
7 And he caused it to be proclaimed and published through Nineveh by the decree of the king and his nobles, saying, Let neither man nor beast, herd nor flock, taste any thing: let them not feed, nor drink water:
8 But let man and beast be covered with sackcloth, and cry mightily unto God: yea, let them turn every one from his evil way, and from the violence that is in their hands.
9 Who can tell if God will turn and repent, and turn away from his fierce anger, that we perish not?
10 And God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way; and God repented of the evil, that he had said that he would do unto them; and he did it not.

3 Cuvântul Domnului a venit a doua oară la Iona şi i-a zis: 2 „Scoală-te, du-te la Ninive, cetatea cea mare, şi vesteşte acolo mesajul pe care ţi-l spun!“
3 Iona s-a sculat şi s-a dus la Ninive, potrivit Cuvântului Domnului. Ninive era o cetate deosebit de mare, fiind nevoie de trei zile[a] pentru a o străbate. 4 Iona a început să meargă prin cetate cale de o zi. El striga: „Încă patruzeci de zile şi Ninive va fi distrusă!“ 5 Atunci oamenii din Ninive au crezut în Dumnezeu, au vestit un post şi s-au îmbrăcat cu saci, de la cel mai mare până la cel mai mic.
6 Când această veste a ajuns la regele din Ninive, acesta s-a ridicat de pe tronul său, şi-a dat jos mantia de pe el, s-a acoperit cu un sac şi s-a aşezat în cenuşă. 7 El a trimis să se vestească în Ninive:
„Din porunca regelui şi a nobililor săi, se cer următoarele:
«Nici un om şi nici un animal, nici din cireadă, nici din turmă, să nu guste nimic, să nu pască şi să nu bea apă deloc! 8 Oamenii şi vitele să se acopere cu saci, să strige cu putere către Dumnezeu şi să se întoarcă de la calea lor cea rea şi de la violenţa lor, de care le sunt pline mâinile! 9 Cine ştie? Poate Dumnezeu se va răzgândi, Îi va părea rău, Îşi va opri apriga Sa mânie şi astfel nu vom pieri!»“
10 Dumnezeu a văzut faptele lor şi cum se întorceau ei de la calea lor cea rea. Atunci Dumnezeu s-a căit de răul pe care zisese că li-l va face şi nu l-a mai făcut.

Jonah Preaches at Nineveh

Now Nineveh was an exceedingly great city, [a]a three-day journey in extent. 4 And Jonah began to enter the city on the first day’s walk. The People of Nineveh Believe
5 So the (B)people of Nineveh believed God, proclaimed a fast, and put on sackcloth, from the greatest to the least of them. 6 Then word came to the king of Nineveh; and he arose from his throne and laid aside his robe, covered himself with sackcloth (C)and sat in ashes. 7 (D)And he caused it to be proclaimed and published throughout Nineveh by the decree of the king and his [b]nobles, saying,
Let neither man nor beast, herd nor flock, taste anything; do not let them eat, or drink water. 8 But let man and beast be covered with sackcloth, and cry mightily to God; yes, (E)let every one turn from his evil way and from (F)the violence that is in his hands. 9 (G)Who can tell if God will turn and relent, and turn away from His fierce anger, so that we may not perish?
10 (H)Then God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way; and God relented from the disaster that He had said He would bring upon them, and He did not do it.
