Jonah’s Flight
1 The word of the Lord came to Jonah son of Amittai:(A) 2 “Get up!(B) Go to the great city(C) of Nineveh(D) and preach against it,(E) because their wickedness(F) has confronted[a] Me.”(G) 3 However, Jonah got up to flee to Tarshish(H) from the Lord’s presence.(I) He went down(J) to Joppa(K) and found a ship going to Tarshish. He paid the fare and went down into it to go with them to Tarshish, from the Lord’s presence.
4 Then the Lord hurled(L) a violent wind on the sea,(M) and such a violent storm arose on the sea that the ship threatened to break apart. 5 The sailors were afraid, and each cried out to his god.(N) They threw the ship’s cargo into the sea to lighten the load.(O) Meanwhile, Jonah had gone down to the lowest part of the vessel and had stretched out and fallen into a deep sleep.(P)
6 The captain approached him and said, “What are you doing sound asleep? Get up! Call to your god.[b](Q) Maybe this god will consider us,(R) and we won’t perish.”
7 “Come on!” the sailors said to each other. “Let’s cast lots.(S) Then we’ll know who is to blame for this trouble we’re in.” So they cast lots, and the lot singled out Jonah.(T) 8 Then they said to him, “Tell us who is to blame for this trouble we’re in.(U) What is your business(V) and where are you from? What is your country and what people are you from?”
9 He answered them, “I’m a Hebrew.(W) I worship[c] Yahweh,(X) the God of the heavens,(Y) who made the sea(Z) and the dry land.”
10 Then the men were even more afraid and said to him, “What is this you’ve done?” The men knew he was fleeing from the Lord’s presence,(AA) because he had told them. 11 So they said to him, “What should we do to you to calm this sea that’s against us?” For the sea was getting worse and worse.
12 He answered them, “Pick me up and throw me into the sea[d] so it may quiet down for you, for I know that I’m to blame(AB) for this violent storm that is against you.” 13 Nevertheless, the men rowed hard to get back to dry land, but they couldn’t because the sea was raging against them more and more.
14 So they called out to the Lord:(AC) “Please, Yahweh, don’t let us perish because of this man’s life, and don’t charge us with innocent blood! For You, Yahweh, have done just as You pleased.”(AD) 15 Then they picked up Jonah and threw him into the sea, and the sea stopped its raging.(AE) 16 The men feared the Lord(AF) even more, and they offered a sacrifice to the Lord and made vows.(AG)
17 [e]Now the Lord had appointed a huge fish(AH) to swallow Jonah, and Jonah was in[f] the fish three days and three nights.(AI)

1 耶和华的话临到亚米太的儿子约拿，说： 2 “起来！到尼尼微大城去，警告其中的居民，因为他们的恶行已经达到我面前。” 3 可是约拿却起来，要逃往他施去，躲避耶和华；他下到约帕，找到了一只要开往他施去的船；他给了钱，就上船（“上船”原文作“下船”），要和他们同往他施去，离开耶和华。
海起大风
4 但是耶和华在海上忽然刮起大风，于是海中狂风大作，船几乎要破裂了。 5 水手都很惧怕，各人向自己的神大声呼求；他们为了减轻船的重量，就把船上的东西拋在海里，可是约拿却下了船舱，躺着熟睡了。 6 船长走到他面前，对他说：“你怎么啦！睡得那么熟？快起来，求告你的 神吧！或者 神会记念我们，使我们不至于丧命！”

7 水手就彼此说：“来吧！让我们抽签，好知道这场灾祸临到我们，是因谁的缘故。”于是他们抽签，结果抽中了约拿。 8 他们就对约拿说：“请告诉我们，这场灾祸临到我们，是因谁的缘故？你是作甚么的？你从哪里来？你是哪一国的人？哪一族的人？” 9 他回答说：“我是希伯来人，我敬畏耶和华天上的 神，就是那创造海洋和陆地的。”
10 众人就大大惧怕，对他说：“你为甚么这样作呢？（“你为甚么这样作呢？”或译：“你作的是甚么呢？”）”那些人知道他躲避耶和华，原来约拿告诉了他们。 11 因为海浪越来越汹涌，他们又对他说：“我们该怎样处置你，才能叫海浪平静呢？” 12 他回答说：“你们把我抬起来，投在海里，海浪就会平静，因为我知道，这场大风暴临到你们，是为了我的缘故。” 13 那些人虽然破浪挣扎，要把船靠岸，却是不能，因为海浪不断汹涌扑来。 14 他们就呼求耶和华，说：“耶和华啊！我们恳求你，不要因这人叫我们丧命；不要把无辜人的血归在我们身上，因为你耶和华是照自己所喜悦的行事。”
15 于是他们把约拿抬起来，投在海里，怒涛就平息了。 16 那些人就大大敬畏耶和华，向他献祭和许愿。
17 耶和华却安排了一条大鱼，把约拿吞下。约拿就在鱼腹中三日三夜。（本节在《马索拉文本》为2:1）

Jonah Runs From His Mission
1 Now the word of Adonai came to Jonah,[a] son of Amittai, saying: 2 “Rise, go to the great city Nineveh and call out to her, for their evil has risen before me.”
3 But Jonah rose to flee to Tarshish, from the presence of Adonai. He went down to Jaffa and found a ship going to Tarshish, paid the fee and went down into it to go with them to Tarshish—away from the presence of Adonai.
4 Then Adonai hurled a forceful wind into the sea and there was such a mighty storm on the sea that the ship was about to shatter. 5 So the sailors were afraid and cried out, each man to his own god. Then they cast the cargo that was in the ship into the sea to lighten it. But Jonah had gone down into the lowest part of the ship, to lay down and fell fast asleep.
6 So the chief sailor came near to him and said to him, “What, are you sleeping? Get up! Call out to your god. Perhaps the gods will consider us, so we will not perish!”
7 Then each man said to his companion, “Come, let’s cast lots—so we may know because of whom this evil is happening to us.” So they cast lots and the lot fell on Jonah.[b]
8 Then they said to him, “Tell us, now! On whose account is this evil happening to us? What is your profession and where did you come from? What is your land and from what nation are you?”
9 He said to them, “I am a Hebrew and I fear Adonai God of the heavens, who made the sea and the dry land.”
10 Then the men became afraid with an overwhelming fear and they said to him, “What have you done?” For the men knew that he had fled from the presence of Adonai, because he had told them. 11 So they said to him, “What should we do to you so the sea will become calm for us?”—for the storm was raging on.
12 “Pick me up and throw me into the sea,” he said to them, “then the sea will become calm for you. For I know it is because of me that this great storm is upon you.”
13 Nevertheless the men rowed hard to return to the land, but they could not, because the sea kept raging against them. 14 So they cried to Adonai and said, “Please, Adonai, don’t let us perish on account of the soul of this man and don’t put innocent blood on us. For you, Adonai, have done as you pleased.”
15 So they picked up Jonah and threw him into the sea—and the sea stilled from its raging. 16 Then the men became afraid with an overwhelming fear of Adonai, and they offered a sacrifice to Adonai and made vows.
