Jonah Is Thrown into the Sea

⁷ And they said to one another, “Come, let us ^(A)cast lots, that we may know on whose account this evil has come upon us.” So they cast lots, and the lot fell on Jonah.

⁴¹ Therefore Saul said, “O Lord God of Israel, why have you not answered your servant this day? If this guilt is in me or in Jonathan my son, O Lord, God of Israel, give Urim. But if this guilt is in your people Israel, give Thummim.”^{[a] (A)}And Jonathan and Saul were taken, but the people escaped. ⁴² Then Saul said, ^(B)“Cast the lot between me and my son Jonathan.” And Jonathan was taken.

²⁰ Then Samuel ^(A)brought all the tribes of Israel near, and the tribe of Benjamin was taken by lot. ²¹ He brought the tribe of Benjamin near by its clans, and the clan of the Matrites was taken by lot;^[a] and Saul the son of Kish was taken by lot. But when they sought him, he could not be found.

¹³ Get up! Consecrate the people and say, ^(A)‘Consecrate yourselves for tomorrow; for thus says the Lord, God of Israel, “There are devoted things in your midst, O Israel. You cannot stand before your enemies until you take away the devoted things from among you.” ¹⁴ In the morning therefore you shall be brought near ^(B)by your tribes. And the tribe that the Lord takes by lot shall come near by clans. And the clan that the Lord takes shall come near by households. And the household that the Lord takes shall come near man by man. ^15 (C)And he who is taken with the devoted things shall be burned with fire, he and all that he has, because he has ^(D)transgressed the covenant of the Lord, and because he has done ^(E)an outrageous thing in Israel.’”

¹⁶ So Joshua rose early in the morning and brought Israel near tribe by tribe, and the tribe of Judah was taken. ¹⁷ And he brought near the clans of Judah, and the clan of the ^(F)Zerahites was taken. And he brought near the clan of the Zerahites man by man, and Zabdi was taken. ¹⁸ And he brought near his household man by man, and Achan the son of Carmi, son of Zabdi, son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, was taken.

The Sin of Achan

¹⁰ The Lord said to Joshua, “Get up! Why have you fallen on your face?

²³ But if you will not do so, behold, you have sinned against the Lord, and ^(A)be sure your sin will find you out.

¹⁹ And ^(A)after destroying ^(B)seven nations in the land of Canaan, ^(C)he gave them their land as an inheritance.

³⁵ And when they had crucified him, ^(A)they divided his garments among them by casting lots.
