⁵ Then the mariners were afraid; and every man cried out to his god, and threw the cargo that was in the ship into the sea, to lighten ^[a]the load. But Jonah had gone down ^(A)into the lowest parts of the ship, had lain down, and was fast asleep.

¹⁸ And because we were exceedingly tempest-tossed, the next day they lightened the ship. ¹⁹ On the third day ^(A)we threw the ship’s tackle overboard with our own hands.

²⁶ So they took the bull which was given them, and they prepared it, and called on the name of Baal from morning even till noon, saying, “O Baal, ^[a]hear us!” But there was ^(A)no voice; no one answered. Then they ^[b]leaped about the altar which they had made.

³ So he came to the sheepfolds by the road, where there was a cave; and ^(A)Saul went in to ^(B)attend to his needs. (^(C)David and his men were staying in the recesses of the cave.)

^19 (A)Then she lulled him to sleep on her knees, and called for a man and had him shave off the seven locks of his head. Then ^[a]she began to torment him, and his strength left him.

⁷ But ^(A)what things were gain to me, these I have counted loss for Christ. ⁸ Yet indeed I also count all things loss ^(B)for the excellence of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them as rubbish, that I may gain Christ

³⁸ So when they had eaten enough, they lightened the ship and threw out the wheat into the sea.
