⁵ All the sailors were afraid and each cried out to his own god. And they threw the cargo into the sea to lighten the ship.^(A)

But Jonah had gone below deck, where he lay down and fell into a deep sleep.

²⁶ So they took the bull given them and prepared it.

Then they called^(A) on the name of Baal from morning till noon. “Baal, answer us!” they shouted. But there was no response;^(B) no one answered. And they danced around the altar they had made.

¹⁸ We took such a violent battering from the storm that the next day they began to throw the cargo overboard.^{(A) 19} On the third day, they threw the ship’s tackle overboard with their own hands.

⁴⁵ Then he returned to the disciples and said to them, “Are you still sleeping and resting? Look, the hour^(A) has come, and the Son of Man is delivered into the hands of sinners.

⁴³ When he came back, he again found them sleeping, because their eyes were heavy.

⁴⁰ Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. “Couldn’t you men keep watch with me^(A) for one hour?” he asked Peter. ⁴¹ “Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation.^(B) The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”

⁵ The bridegroom was a long time in coming, and they all became drowsy and fell asleep.^(A)

¹⁶ At this the men greatly feared^(A) the Lord, and they offered a sacrifice to the Lord and made vows^(B) to him.
