17 [a]Now the Lord had appointed a huge fish(A) to swallow Jonah, and Jonah was in[b] the fish three days and three nights.(B)

Jonah’s Prayer

Jonah prayed to the Lord his God from inside[c] the fish:(C)

I called to the Lord in my distress,(D)
and He answered me.
I cried out for help in the belly of Sheol;(E)
You heard my voice.(F)
You threw me into the depths,(G)
into the heart of the seas,(H)
and the current[d] overcame me.
All Your breakers and Your billows swept over me.(I)
But I said: I have been banished(J)
from Your sight,(K)
yet I will look once more[e]
toward Your holy temple.(L)
The waters engulfed me up to the neck;[f](M)
the watery depths overcame me;
seaweed was wrapped around my head.(N)
I sank to the foundations of the mountains;(O)
the earth with its prison bars closed behind me forever!(P)
But You raised my life(Q) from the Pit, Lord my God!(R)
As my life was fading away,(S)
I remembered Yahweh.(T)
My prayer came to You,(U)
to Your holy temple.(V)
Those who cling to worthless idols(W)
forsake faithful love,(X)
but as for me, I will sacrifice(Y) to You
with a voice of thanksgiving.(Z)
I will fulfill(AA) what I have vowed.
Salvation[g] is from the Lord!(AB)

10 Then the Lord commanded the fish,(AC) and it vomited Jonah onto dry land.
