A Great Fish Swallows Jonah

^17 [a] And the Lord appointed^[b] a great fish to swallow up Jonah. ^(A)And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.

⁴⁰ For ^(A)just as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, ^(B)so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.

^4 (A)An evil and adulterous generation seeks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah.” So ^(B)he left them and departed.

³⁰ For as ^(A)Jonah became a sign to the people of Nineveh, so will the Son of Man be to this generation.

²¹ So ^(A)God created the great sea creatures and every living creature that moves, with which the waters swarm, according to their kinds, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good.

⁶ Now the Lord God appointed a plant^[a] and made it come up over Jonah, that it might be a shade over his head, to save him from his discomfort.^[b] So Jonah was exceedingly glad because of the plant.
