¹² He said to them, “Pick me up and hurl me into the sea; then the sea will quiet down for you, ^(A)for I know it is because of me that this great tempest has come upon you.”

¹⁷ Then David spoke to the Lord when he saw the angel who was striking the people, and said, “Behold, I have sinned, and I have done wickedly. But these sheep, what have they done? Please let your hand be against me and against my father's house.”

¹⁷ And David said to God, “Was it not I who gave command to number the people? It is I who have sinned and done great evil. But these sheep, what have they done? Please let your hand, O Lord my God, be against me and against my father's house. But do not let the plague be on your people.”

^12 (A)Therefore the people of Israel cannot stand before their enemies. They ^(B)turn their backs before their enemies, because they have become ^(C)devoted for destruction.^[a] I will be with you no more, unless you destroy ^(D)the devoted things from among you.

²⁴ and he said, ‘Do not be afraid, Paul; ^(A)you must stand before Caesar. And behold, ^(B)God has granted you all those who sail with you.’

⁵⁰ Nor do you understand that ^(A)it is better for you that one man should die for the people, not that the whole nation should perish.”

^18 (A)Wisdom is better than weapons of war, but ^(B)one sinner destroys much good.

²⁰ And Achan answered Joshua, “Truly ^(A)I have sinned against the Lord God of Israel, and this is what I did: ²¹ when I saw among the spoil a beautiful cloak from Shinar, and 200 shekels of silver, and a bar of gold weighing 50 shekels,^[a] then I coveted them and took them. And see, they are hidden in the earth inside my tent, with the silver underneath.”
