Jonah 3:8-10
Common English Bible
8 Let humans and animals alike put on mourning clothes, and let them call upon God forcefully! And let all persons stop their evil behavior and the violence that’s under their control!” 9 He thought, Who knows? God may see this and turn from his wrath, so that we might not perish.[a]
10 God saw what they were doing—that they had ceased their evil behavior. So God stopped planning to destroy them, and he didn’t do it.

New International Version
8 But let people and animals be covered with sackcloth. Let everyone call(A) urgently on God. Let them give up(B) their evil ways(C) and their violence.(D) 9 Who knows?(E) God may yet relent(F) and with compassion turn(G) from his fierce anger(H) so that we will not perish.”
10 When God saw what they did and how they turned from their evil ways, he relented(I) and did not bring on them the destruction(J) he had threatened.(K)
