17 [a]And the Lord designated a great fish to swallow Jonah, and Jonah was in the (A)stomach of the fish for three days and three nights.

Jonah’s Prayer

[b]Then Jonah prayed to the Lord his God (B)from the stomach of the fish, and he said,

“I (C)called out of my distress to the Lord,
And He answered me.
I called for help from the [c]depth of (D)Sheol;
You heard my voice.
For You (E)threw me into the deep,
Into the heart of the seas,
And the current flowed around me.
All Your (F)breakers and waves passed over me.
So I said, ‘I have been (G)cast out [d]of Your sight.
Nevertheless I will look again (H)toward Your holy temple.’
(I)Water encompassed me to the [e]point of death.
The (J)deep flowed around me,
Seaweed was wrapped around my head.

Jonah’s Prayer

17 Now the Lord provided(A) a huge fish to swallow Jonah,(B) and Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights. [a]From inside the fish Jonah prayed to the Lord his God. He said:

“In my distress I called(C) to the Lord,(D)
    and he answered me.
From deep in the realm of the dead(E) I called for help,
    and you listened to my cry.
You hurled me into the depths,(F)
    into the very heart of the seas,
    and the currents swirled about me;
all your waves(G) and breakers
    swept over me.(H)
I said, ‘I have been banished
    from your sight;(I)
yet I will look again
    toward your holy temple.’(J)
The engulfing waters threatened me,[b]
    the deep surrounded me;
    seaweed was wrapped around my head.(K)

  2. Jonah 2:5 Or waters were at my throat

17 Now the Lord had prepared a great fish to swallow up Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.

Then Jonah prayed unto the Lord his God out of the fish's belly,

And said, I cried by reason of mine affliction unto the Lord, and he heard me; out of the belly of hell cried I, and thou heardest my voice.

For thou hadst cast me into the deep, in the midst of the seas; and the floods compassed me about: all thy billows and thy waves passed over me.

Then I said, I am cast out of thy sight; yet I will look again toward thy holy temple.

The waters compassed me about, even to the soul: the depth closed me round about, the weeds were wrapped about my head.
