Jonah 1:15-2:10
New International Version
15 Then they took Jonah and threw him overboard, and the raging sea grew calm.(A) 16 At this the men greatly feared(B) the Lord, and they offered a sacrifice to the Lord and made vows(C) to him.
Jonah’s Prayer
17 Now the Lord provided(D) a huge fish to swallow Jonah,(E) and Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights. 2 1 [a]From inside the fish Jonah prayed to the Lord his God. 2 He said:
“In my distress I called(F) to the Lord,(G)
and he answered me.
From deep in the realm of the dead(H) I called for help,
and you listened to my cry.
3 You hurled me into the depths,(I)
into the very heart of the seas,
and the currents swirled about me;
all your waves(J) and breakers
swept over me.(K)
4 I said, ‘I have been banished
from your sight;(L)
yet I will look again
toward your holy temple.’(M)
5 The engulfing waters threatened me,[b]
the deep surrounded me;
seaweed was wrapped around my head.(N)
6 To the roots of the mountains(O) I sank down;
the earth beneath barred me in forever.
But you, Lord my God,
brought my life up from the pit.(P)
7 “When my life was ebbing away,
I remembered(Q) you, Lord,
and my prayer(R) rose to you,
to your holy temple.(S)
8 “Those who cling to worthless idols(T)
turn away from God’s love for them.
9 But I, with shouts of grateful praise,(U)
will sacrifice(V) to you.
What I have vowed(W) I will make good.
I will say, ‘Salvation(X) comes from the Lord.’”
10 And the Lord commanded the fish, and it vomited Jonah onto dry land.
Jonah 1:15-2:10
King James Version
15 So they took up Jonah, and cast him forth into the sea: and the sea ceased from her raging.
16 Then the men feared the Lord exceedingly, and offered a sacrifice unto the Lord, and made vows.
17 Now the Lord had prepared a great fish to swallow up Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.
2 Then Jonah prayed unto the Lord his God out of the fish's belly,
2 And said, I cried by reason of mine affliction unto the Lord, and he heard me; out of the belly of hell cried I, and thou heardest my voice.
3 For thou hadst cast me into the deep, in the midst of the seas; and the floods compassed me about: all thy billows and thy waves passed over me.
4 Then I said, I am cast out of thy sight; yet I will look again toward thy holy temple.
5 The waters compassed me about, even to the soul: the depth closed me round about, the weeds were wrapped about my head.
6 I went down to the bottoms of the mountains; the earth with her bars was about me for ever: yet hast thou brought up my life from corruption, O Lord my God.
7 When my soul fainted within me I remembered the Lord: and my prayer came in unto thee, into thine holy temple.
8 They that observe lying vanities forsake their own mercy.
9 But I will sacrifice unto thee with the voice of thanksgiving; I will pay that that I have vowed. Salvation is of the Lord.
10 And the Lord spake unto the fish, and it vomited out Jonah upon the dry land.
