Jonina ljutnja i Božja dobrota
4 Joni to nije bilo drago pa se jako naljutio. 2 Pomolio se BOGU: »O, BOŽE, dok sam još bio u svojoj zemlji, znao sam da će baš tako biti! Zato sam i pobjegao u Taršiš. Znao sam da si milosrdan i suosjećajan Bog, strpljiv i pun ljubavi. Čak i kad odlučiš nekoga kazniti, spreman si od toga odustati. 3 Zato mi sad, BOŽE, oduzmi život—radije bih umro nego živio.«
4 BOG ga je upitao: »Imaš li se pravo ljutiti?«
5 Jona je otišao istočno od grada, napravio ondje zaklon i sjeo u hlad. Čekao je da vidi što će biti s gradom.
Jona ostaje bez hlada
6 Tada BOG učini da pokraj Jone izraste velika biljka[a], da bi mu glava bila u hladu i da bi mu bilo udobnije. Jona joj se veoma razveselio. 7 Sutradan ujutro Bog je poslao crva da podgrize biljku pa se ona osušila. 8 Kako se sunce dizalo, Bog je poslao vrući istočni vjetar. Sunce je Joni pržilo glavu pa je malaksao i poželio umrijeti. Izjavio je: »Radije bih umro nego živio!«

9 Bog zatim upita Jonu: »Imaš li se pravo ljutiti zbog biljke?«
»Imam«, odgovori Jona. »Mogao bih umrijeti od ljutnje.«
10 BOG reče: »Toliko ti je stalo do te biljke, koju nisi njegovao niti se trudio oko nje, koja je niknula i uvenula preko noći. 11 Pa kako da meni ne bude stalo do velikoga grada Ninive. Ondje ima više od stotinu i dvadeset tisuća ljudi koji ne razlikuju dobro od zla[b], kao i mnoštvo njihove stoke!«

- 4,6 velika biljka S obzirom na izvornu hebrejsku riječ, najvjerojatnije je riječ o ricinusovom grmolikom drvetu, koje može narasti vrlo veliko. Ta biljka i njezini plodovi su otrovni, što može biti slika Joninog stava.
- 4,11 ne razlikuju dobro od zla Doslovno: »ne razlikuju lijevu ruku od desne«. Najvjerojatnije taj se izraz odnosi na djecu, što bi značilo da je u Ninivi bilo više od sto dvadeset tisuća djece.

Jonah’s Anger and God’s Kindness
4 But it displeased Jonah exceedingly, and he became angry. 2 So he prayed to the Lord, and said, “Ah, Lord, was not this what I said when I was still in my country? Therefore I (A)fled previously to Tarshish; for I know that You are a (B)gracious and merciful God, slow to anger and abundant in lovingkindness, One who relents from doing harm. 3 (C)Therefore now, O Lord, please take my life from me, for (D)it is better for me to die than to live!”
4 Then the Lord said, “Is it right for you to be angry?”
5 So Jonah went out of the city and sat on the east side of the city. There he made himself a shelter and sat under it in the shade, till he might see what would become of the city. 6 And the Lord God prepared a [a]plant and made it come up over Jonah, that it might be shade for his head to deliver him from his misery. So Jonah [b]was very grateful for the plant. 7 But as morning dawned the next day God prepared a worm, and it so damaged the plant that it withered. 8 And it happened, when the sun arose, that God prepared a vehement east wind; and the sun beat on Jonah’s head, so that he grew faint. Then he wished death for himself, and said, (E)“It is better for me to die than to live.”
9 Then God said to Jonah, “Is it right for you to be angry about the plant?”
And he said, “It is right for me to be angry, even to death!”
10 But the Lord said, “You have had pity on the plant for which you have not labored, nor made it grow, which [c]came up in a night and perished in a night. 11 And should I not pity Nineveh, (F)that great city, in which are more than one hundred and twenty thousand persons (G)who cannot discern between their right hand and their left—and much livestock?”

O Livro
Jonas irrita-se com a compaixão do Senhor
4 Esta alteração dos planos de Deus deixou Jonas extremamente aborrecido. 2 E lamentou-se perante o Senhor assim: “Era isto exatamente o que eu receava que fizesses, Senhor, quando me falaste, lá no meu país, para que viesse aqui. Por essa razão, fugi para Társis. Eu sabia que eras um Deus gracioso e misericordioso, lento em irares-te e cheio de bondade. Eu sabia que estavas desejoso de renunciar aos teus planos de destruir o povo. 3 Peço-te, então, que me tires a vida! Preferia morrer a viver nestas circunstâncias!”
4 E o Senhor respondeu-lhe: “Será razoável esse teu ressentimento?”
5 Jonas saiu da cidade, foi para um sítio a oriente dela e ali ficou extremamente enfadado. Construiu uma cobertura de folhas e pôs-se à sombra, à espera de ver o que aconteceria à cidade. 6 O Senhor Deus permitiu que uma planta de rícino crescesse rapidamente e espalhasse largas folhas que faziam sombra a Jonas. Isto fez com que ficasse muito satisfeito e agradecido.
7 Mas na manhã seguinte Deus enviou um bicho que roeu a planta que murchou e morreu. 8 Quando o Sol começou a aquecer, Deus permitiu que se levantasse um vento abrasador de leste que, juntamente com o Sol caindo a pique sobre Jonas, fez com que este desfalecesse e desejasse morrer. “Oh! Antes morrer do que viver nestas condições!”
9 E Deus respondeu-lhe: “Será razoável que te enfades dessa maneira por causa duma planta?”
“Sim, com certeza! É justo que me aborreça a ponto de desejar a morte!”
10 “Ficaste amargurado por a planta ter morrido, ainda que nada tivesses feito para a fazer crescer, e tratava-se duma planta que teve uma vida muito curta! 11 Não devia eu então ter compaixão desta grande cidade de Nínive, com os seus 120 000 habitantes, sem nenhuma compreensão espiritual, e onde vivem também muitos animais?”
