Nínive se arrepiente
3 El Señor se dirigió por segunda vez a Jonás, y le dijo: 2 «Anda, vete a la gran ciudad de Nínive y anuncia lo que te voy a decir.»
3-4 Jonás se puso en marcha y fue a Nínive, como el Señor se lo había ordenado. Nínive era una ciudad tan grande que para recorrerla toda había que caminar tres días. Jonás entró en la ciudad y caminó todo un día, diciendo a grandes voces: «¡Dentro de cuarenta días Nínive será destruida!»
5 Los habitantes de la ciudad, grandes y pequeños, creyeron en Dios, proclamaron ayuno y se pusieron ropas ásperas en señal de dolor. 6 Cuando la noticia llegó al rey de Nínive, también él se levantó de su trono, se quitó sus vestiduras reales, se puso ropas ásperas y se sentó en el suelo. 7 Luego, el rey y sus ministros dieron a conocer por toda la ciudad el siguiente decreto: «Que nadie tome ningún alimento. Que tampoco se dé de comer ni de beber al ganado y a los rebaños. 8 Al contrario, vístanse todos con ropas ásperas en señal de dolor, y clamen a Dios con todas sus fuerzas. Deje cada uno su mala conducta y la violencia que ha estado cometiendo hasta ahora; 9 tal vez Dios cambie de parecer y se calme su ira, y así no moriremos.»
10 Dios vio lo que hacía la gente de Nínive y cómo dejaba su mala conducta, y decidió no hacerles el daño que les había anunciado.

Jonás obedece al Señor
3 La palabra del Señor vino por segunda vez a Jonás: 2 «Levántate y ve a la gran ciudad de Nínive y proclámale el mensaje que te voy a dar».
3 Jonás se levantó y se encaminó a Nínive, como el Señor le ordenó. Nínive era una ciudad tan grande que se necesitaban tres días para recorrerla. 4 Jonás entró en la ciudad y la recorrió todo un día, mientras proclamaba: «¡Dentro de cuarenta días Nínive será destruida!». 5 Y los ninivitas creyeron a Dios, proclamaron ayuno y, desde el mayor hasta el menor, se vistieron con ropa áspera en señal de arrepentimiento.
6 Cuando el rey de Nínive se enteró del mensaje, se levantó de su trono, se quitó su manto real, se vistió con ropa áspera y se sentó sobre ceniza. 7 Luego mandó que se pregonara en Nínive:
«Por decreto del rey y de su corte:
»Ninguna persona o animal, ni ovejas ni vacas, probará alimento alguno, ni tampoco pastará ni beberá agua. 8 Personas y animales vestirán telas ásperas y clamarán a Dios con todas sus fuerzas. Ordena así mismo que cada uno se convierta de su mal camino y de sus hechos violentos. 9 ¡Quién sabe! Tal vez Dios cambie de parecer y aplaque el ardor de su ira, y no perezcamos».
10 Al ver Dios lo que hicieron, es decir, que habían abandonado su mal camino, cambió de parecer y no llevó a cabo la destrucción que había anunciado.

Conversion of Nineveh
3 The word of the Lord came to Jonah a second time, saying,(A) 2 “Get up, go to Nineveh, that great city, and proclaim to it the message that I tell you.” 3 So Jonah set out and went to Nineveh, according to the word of the Lord. Now Nineveh was an exceedingly large city, a three days’ walk across. 4 Jonah began to go into the city, going a day’s walk. And he cried out, “Forty days more, and Nineveh shall be overthrown!” 5 And the people of Nineveh believed God; they proclaimed a fast, and everyone, great and small, put on sackcloth.(B)
6 When the news reached the king of Nineveh, he rose from his throne, removed his robe, covered himself with sackcloth, and sat in ashes.(C) 7 Then he had a proclamation made in Nineveh: “By the decree of the king and his nobles: No human or animal, no herd or flock, shall taste anything. They shall not feed, nor shall they drink water.(D) 8 Humans and animals shall be covered with sackcloth, and they shall cry mightily to God. All shall turn from their evil ways and from the violence that is in their hands.(E) 9 Who knows? God may relent and change his mind; he may turn from his fierce anger, so that we do not perish.”(F)
10 When God saw what they did, how they turned from their evil ways, God changed his mind about the calamity that he had said he would bring upon them, and he did not do it.(G)

Jonah Goes to Nineveh
3 Then the word of the Lord came to Jonah(A) a second time: 2 “Go to the great city of Nineveh and proclaim to it the message I give you.”
3 Jonah obeyed the word of the Lord and went to Nineveh. Now Nineveh was a very large city; it took three days to go through it. 4 Jonah began by going a day’s journey into the city, proclaiming,(B) “Forty more days and Nineveh will be overthrown.” 5 The Ninevites believed God. A fast was proclaimed, and all of them, from the greatest to the least, put on sackcloth.(C)
6 When Jonah’s warning reached the king of Nineveh, he rose from his throne, took off his royal robes, covered himself with sackcloth and sat down in the dust.(D) 7 This is the proclamation he issued in Nineveh:
“By the decree of the king and his nobles:
Do not let people or animals, herds or flocks, taste anything; do not let them eat or drink.(E) 8 But let people and animals be covered with sackcloth. Let everyone call(F) urgently on God. Let them give up(G) their evil ways(H) and their violence.(I) 9 Who knows?(J) God may yet relent(K) and with compassion turn(L) from his fierce anger(M) so that we will not perish.”
10 When God saw what they did and how they turned from their evil ways, he relented(N) and did not bring on them the destruction(O) he had threatened.(P)
