Jonás 1

1 Jehová dirigió su palabra a Jonás hijo de Amitai y le dijo: 2 «Levántate y ve a Nínive, aquella gran ciudad, y clama contra ella, porque su maldad ha subido hasta mí.»

3 Pero Jonás se levantó para huir de la presencia de Jehová a Tarsis, y descendió a Jope, donde encontró una nave que partía para Tarsis; pagó su pasaje, y se embarcó para irse con ellos a Tarsis, lejos de la presencia de Jehová. 4 Pero Jehová hizo soplar un gran viento en el mar, y hubo en el mar una tempestad tan grande que se pensó que se partiría la nave. 5 Los marineros tuvieron miedo y cada uno clamaba a su dios. Luego echaron al mar los enseres que había en la nave, para descargarla de ellos. Mientras tanto, Jonás había bajado al interior de la nave y se había echado a dormir. 6 Entonces el patrón de la nave se le acercó y le dijo: «¿Qué tienes, dormilón? Levántate y clama a tu Dios. Quizá tenga compasión de nosotros y no perezcamos.»

7 Entre tanto, cada uno decía a su compañero:

«Venid y echemos suertes, para que sepamos quién es el culpable de que nos haya venido este mal.»

Echaron, pues, suertes, y la suerte cayó sobre Jonás. 8 Entonces ellos le dijeron:

—Explícanos ahora por qué nos ha venido este mal. ¿Qué oficio tienes y de dónde vienes? ¿Cuál es tu tierra y de qué pueblo eres?

9 Él les respondió:

—Soy hebreo y temo a Jehová, Dios de los cielos, que hizo el mar y la tierra.

10 Aquellos hombres sintieron un gran temor y le dijeron:

—¿Por qué has hecho esto?

Pues ellos supieron que huía de la presencia de Jehová por lo que él les había contado.

11 Como el mar se embravecía cada vez más, le preguntaron:

—¿Qué haremos contigo para que el mar se nos aquiete?

12 Él les respondió:

—Tomadme y echadme al mar, y el mar se os aquietará, pues sé que por mi causa os ha sobrevenido esta gran tempestad.

13 Aquellos hombres se esforzaron por hacer volver la nave a tierra, pero no pudieron, porque el mar se embravecía cada vez más contra ellos. 14 Entonces clamaron a Jehová y dijeron: «Te rogamos ahora, Jehová, que no perezcamos nosotros por la vida de este hombre, ni nos hagas responsables de la sangre de un inocente; porque tú, Jehová, has obrado como has querido.»

15 Tomaron luego a Jonás y lo echaron al mar; y se aquietó el furor del mar. 16 Sintieron aquellos hombres gran temor por Jehová, le ofrecieron un sacrificio y le hicieron votos.

17 Pero Jehová tenía dispuesto un gran pez para que se tragara a Jonás, y Jonás estuvo en el vientre del pez tres días y tres noches.

Jonás desobedece al Señor

1 La palabra del Señor vino a Jonás, hijo de Amitay: 2 «Levántate y ve a la gran ciudad de Nínive y proclama contra ella que su maldad ha llegado hasta mi presencia».

3 Pero Jonás huyó del Señor y se dirigió a Tarsis. Bajó a Jope, donde encontró un barco que zarpaba rumbo a Tarsis, pagó su pasaje y se embarcó con los que iban a esa ciudad, huyendo así del Señor.

4 Pero el Señor lanzó sobre el mar un fuerte viento y se desencadenó una tormenta tan violenta que el barco amenazaba con hacerse pedazos. 5 Todos los marineros tenían miedo y cada uno clamaba a su dios. Y arrojaron el cargamento al mar para aligerar el barco.

Jonás, en cambio, había bajado al fondo de la nave para acostarse y dormía profundamente. 6 El capitán del barco se le acercó y dijo:

—¿Cómo puedes estar durmiendo? ¡Levántate! ¡Clama a tu Dios! Quizá tenga piedad de nosotros y no perezcamos.

7 Los marineros, por su parte, se dijeron unos a otros:

—¡Vamos, echemos suertes para averiguar quién tiene la culpa de que nos haya venido este desastre!

Así lo hicieron y la suerte recayó en Jonás. 8 Entonces preguntaron:

—Dinos ahora, ¿quién es el responsable de causarnos este desastre? ¿A qué te dedicas? ¿De dónde vienes? ¿Cuál es tu país? ¿A qué pueblo perteneces?

9 —Soy hebreo y temo al Señor, Dios del cielo, que hizo el mar y la tierra firme —respondió.

10 Al oír esto los marineros se aterraron aún más y, como sabían que Jonás huía del Señor, pues él mismo lo había contado, le dijeron:

—¡Qué es lo que has hecho!

11 Pero el mar se iba enfureciendo más y más, así que preguntaron:

—¿Qué haremos contigo para que el mar se calme?

12 —Tómenme y láncenme al mar, verán que el mar se calmará —les respondió—. Yo sé bien que por mi culpa se ha desatado sobre ustedes esta terrible tormenta.

13 Sin embargo, en un intento por regresar a tierra firme, los marineros se pusieron a remar con todas sus fuerzas; pero, como el mar se enfurecía más y más contra ellos, no lo consiguieron. 14 Entonces clamaron al Señor: «Oh Señor, tú haces lo que quieres. No nos hagas perecer por quitarle la vida a este hombre ni nos hagas responsables de la muerte de un inocente». 15 Así que tomaron a Jonás, lo lanzaron al agua y la furia del mar se aplacó. 16 Al ver esto, se apoderó de ellos un profundo temor al Señor y le ofrecieron un sacrificio e hicieron promesas.

Oración de Jonás

17 El Señor, por su parte, dispuso un enorme pez para que se tragara a Jonás, quien pasó tres días y tres noches en su vientre.

Jonah Disobeys Yahweh

1 And the word of Yahweh came to Jonah the son of Amittai, saying, 2 “Get up! Go to the great city Nineveh and cry out against her, because their evil has come up before me.”[a] 3 But Jonah set out to flee toward Tarshish from the presence of[b] Yahweh. And he went down to Joppa and found a merchant ship going to Tarshish, and paid her fare, and went on board her to go with them toward Tarshish from the presence of[c] Yahweh.

4 And Yahweh hurled a great wind upon the sea, and it was a great storm on the sea, and the merchant ship was in danger of breaking up.[d] 5 And the mariners were afraid, and each cried out to his god. And they threw the contents[e] that were in the merchant ship into the sea to lighten it for them. And meanwhile Jonah went down into the hold of the vessel and lay down and fell asleep. 6 And the captain[f] of the ship approached him and said to him, “Why are you sound asleep?[g] Get up! Call on your god! Perhaps your god[h] will take notice of us and we won’t perish!” 7 And they said to one another,[i] “Come, let us cast lots so that we may know on whose account this disaster has come on us!” And they cast lots, and the lot fell on Jonah. 8 So they said to him, “Please tell us whoever is responsible that this disaster has come upon us! What is your occupation? And from where do you come? What is your country? And from which people are you?” 9 And he said to them, “I am a Hebrew, and I fear Yahweh, the God of heaven, who made the sea and the dry land.” 10 Then the men were greatly afraid,[j] and they said to him, “What is this you have done?” because they[k] knew that he was fleeing from the presence of[l] Yahweh (because he had told them). 11 So they said to him, “What shall we do to you so that the sea may quiet down for us?” because the sea was growing more and more tempestuous.[m] 12 And he said to them, “Pick me up and hurl me into the sea so that the sea may quiet down for you, because I know that on account of me this great storm has come upon you all.” 13 But the men rowed hard to bring the ship[n] back to the dry land, and they could not do so because the sea was growing more and more tempestuous[o] against them. 14 So they cried out to Yahweh, and they said, “O Yahweh! Please do not let us perish because of this man’s life, and do not make us guilty of innocent blood,[p] because you, O Yahweh, did what you wanted.” 15 And they picked Jonah up and hurled him into the sea, and the sea ceased from its raging. 16 So the men feared Yahweh greatly,[q] and they offered a sacrifice to Yahweh and made[r] vows.

Jonah Is Swallowed by a Fish and Prays to Yahweh

17 [s] And Yahweh provided a large fish to swallow up Jonah, and Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.
