Jonás huye de su misión
1 La palabra del SEÑOR vino a Jonás[a] hijo de Amitai diciendo: 2 “Levántate y ve a Nínive, la gran ciudad, y predica contra ella porque su maldad ha subido a mi presencia”.
3 Entonces Jonás se levantó para huir de la presencia del SEÑOR a Tarsis. Descendió a Jope y halló un barco que iba a Tarsis; y pagando su pasaje entró en él para irse con ellos a Tarsis huyendo de la presencia del SEÑOR. 4 Pero el SEÑOR lanzó un gran viento sobre el mar y se produjo una enorme tempestad de manera que el barco estaba a punto de romperse. 5 Los marineros tuvieron miedo y cada uno invocaba a su dios. Y echaron al mar el cargamento que había en el barco para aligerarlo. Pero Jonás había bajado al fondo del barco, se había acostado y se había quedado profundamente dormido. 6 El capitán del barco se acercó a Jonás y le dijo:
—¿Qué te pasa dormilón? ¡Levántate e invoca a tu dios! Quizás él se fije en nosotros y no perezcamos.
7 Entonces se dijeron unos a otros:
—¡Vengan y echemos suertes para saber por culpa de quién nos ha sobrevenido este mal!
Echaron suertes y la suerte cayó sobre Jonás. 8 Entonces le dijeron:
—Decláranos por qué nos ha sobrevenido este mal. ¿Qué oficio tienes y de dónde vienes? ¿Cuál es tu país y de qué pueblo eres?
9 Él respondió:
—Soy hebreo y temo al SEÑOR Dios de los cielos, que hizo el mar y la tierra.
10 Aquellos hombres temieron muchísimo y le preguntaron:
—¿Por qué has hecho esto?
Pues entendieron que huía de la presencia del SEÑOR ya que él se lo había declarado. 11 Y le preguntaron:
—¿Qué haremos contigo para que el mar se nos calme?
Porque el mar se embravecía más y más. 12 Y él respondió:
—Levántenme y échenme al mar y se les calmará; pues yo sé que por mi causa les ha sobrevenido esta gran tempestad.
13 Aquellos hombres remaban para hacer volver el barco a tierra pero no pudieron porque el mar se embravecía cada vez más. 14 Entonces clamaron al SEÑOR diciendo:
—¡Oh SEÑOR, por favor, que no perezcamos nosotros por la vida de este hombre! No nos hagas responsables de sangre inocente porque tú, oh SEÑOR, has hecho como has querido.
15 Entonces levantaron a Jonás y lo echaron al mar y el mar cesó de su furia. 16 Y aquellos hombres temieron grandemente al SEÑOR; le ofrecieron un sacrificio e hicieron votos.
17 Pero el SEÑOR dispuso un gran pez que se tragara a Jonás. Y este estuvo en el vientre del pez tres días y tres noches.

1 El Señor se dirigió a Jonás, hijo de Amitai, y le dijo: 2 «Anda, vete a la gran ciudad de Nínive y anuncia que voy a destruirla, porque hasta mí ha llegado la noticia de su maldad.»
3 Pero Jonás, en lugar de obedecer, trató de huir del Señor, y se fue al puerto de Jope, donde encontró un barco que estaba a punto de salir para Tarsis; entonces compró pasaje y se embarcó para ir allá. 4 Pero el Señor hizo que soplara un viento muy fuerte, y se levantó en alta mar una tempestad tan violenta que parecía que el barco iba a hacerse pedazos. 5 Los marineros estaban llenos de miedo, y cada uno invocaba a su dios. Por fin, para aligerar el barco, echaron toda la carga al mar. Jonás, mientras tanto, había bajado a la bodega del barco, y allí se había quedado profundamente dormido. 6 Entonces el capitán fue a donde estaba Jonás, y le dijo:
—¿Qué haces tú ahí, dormilón? ¡Levántate y clama a tu Dios! Tal vez quiera ocuparse de nosotros y nos ponga a salvo.
7 Entre tanto, los marineros se decían unos a otros:
—Vamos a echar suertes, para ver quién tiene la culpa de esta desgracia.
Echaron, pues, suertes, y Jonás resultó ser el culpable. 8 Entonces le dijeron:
—Dinos por qué nos ha venido esta desgracia. ¿Qué negocio te ha traído aquí? ¿De dónde vienes? ¿Cuál es tu país? ¿De qué raza eres?
9 Jonás les contestó:
—Soy hebreo, y rindo culto al Señor, el Dios del cielo, creador del mar y de la tierra.
10-11 Jonás contó a los marineros que él estaba huyendo del Señor, y ellos, al oírlo y al ver que el mar se agitaba más y más, sintieron mucho miedo y le preguntaron:
—¿Por qué has hecho esto? ¿Qué podemos hacer contigo para que el mar se calme?
12 —Pues échenme al mar, y el mar se calmará —contestó Jonás—. Yo sé bien que soy el culpable de que esta tremenda tempestad se les haya venido encima.
13 Los marineros se pusieron a remar con todas sus fuerzas para acercarse a tierra, pero no lo lograron, porque el mar se embravecía cada vez más. 14 Entonces clamaron al Señor y dijeron: «Señor, no nos dejes morir por culpa de este hombre. Y si es inocente, no nos hagas responsables de su muerte, porque tú, Señor, actúas según tu voluntad.»
15 Dicho esto, echaron a Jonás al mar, y el mar se calmó. 16 Al verlo, los marineros sintieron una profunda reverencia por el Señor, y le ofrecieron un sacrificio y le hicieron promesas.
17 (2.1) Entre tanto, el Señor había dispuesto un enorme pez para que se tragara a Jonás. Y Jonás pasó tres días y tres noches dentro del pez.

Commissioning of a reluctant prophet
1 The Lord’s word came to Jonah, Amittai’s son: 2 “Get up and go to Nineveh, that great city, and cry out against it, for their evil has come to my attention.”
3 So Jonah got up—to flee to Tarshish from the Lord! He went down to Joppa and found a ship headed for Tarshish. He paid the fare and went aboard to go with them to Tarshish, away from the Lord. 4 But the Lord hurled a great wind upon the sea, so that there was a great storm on the sea; the ship looked like it might be broken to pieces. 5 The sailors were terrified, and each one cried out to his god. They hurled the cargo that was in the ship into the sea to make it lighter.
Now Jonah had gone down into the hold of the vessel to lie down and was deep in sleep. 6 The ship’s officer came and said to him, “How can you possibly be sleeping so deeply? Get up! Call on your god! Perhaps the god will give some thought to us so that we won’t perish.”
7 Meanwhile, the sailors said to each other, “Come on, let’s cast lots so that we might learn who is to blame for this evil that’s happening to us.” They cast lots, and the lot fell on Jonah. 8 So they said to him, “Tell us, since you’re the cause of this evil happening to us: What do you do and where are you from? What’s your country and of what people are you?”
9 He said to them, “I’m a Hebrew. I worship the Lord, the God of heaven—who made the sea and the dry land.”
10 Then the men were terrified and said to him, “What have you done?” (The men knew that Jonah was fleeing from the Lord, because he had told them.)
11 They said to him, “What will we do about you so that the sea will become calm around us?” (The sea was continuing to rage.)
12 He said to them, “Pick me up and hurl me into the sea! Then the sea will become calm around you. I know it’s my fault that this great storm has come upon you.”
13 The men rowed to reach dry land, but they couldn’t manage it because the sea continued to rage against them. 14 So they called on the Lord, saying, “Please, Lord, don’t let us perish on account of this man’s life, and don’t blame us for innocent blood! You are the Lord: whatever you want, you can do.” 15 Then they picked up Jonah and hurled him into the sea, and the sea ceased its raging. 16 The men worshipped the Lord with a profound reverence; they offered a sacrifice to the Lord and made solemn promises.
No escape for the prophet
17 [a] Meanwhile, the Lord provided a great fish to swallow Jonah. Jonah was in the belly of the fish for three days and three nights.

Jonah Flees From the Lord
1 The word of the Lord came to Jonah(A) son of Amittai:(B) 2 “Go to the great city of Nineveh(C) and preach against it, because its wickedness has come up before me.”
3 But Jonah ran(D) away from the Lord and headed for Tarshish(E). He went down to Joppa,(F) where he found a ship bound for that port. After paying the fare, he went aboard and sailed for Tarshish to flee from the Lord.(G)
4 Then the Lord sent a great wind on the sea, and such a violent storm arose that the ship threatened to break up.(H) 5 All the sailors were afraid and each cried out to his own god. And they threw the cargo into the sea to lighten the ship.(I)
But Jonah had gone below deck, where he lay down and fell into a deep sleep. 6 The captain went to him and said, “How can you sleep? Get up and call(J) on your god! Maybe he will take notice of us so that we will not perish.”(K)
7 Then the sailors said to each other, “Come, let us cast lots to find out who is responsible for this calamity.”(L) They cast lots and the lot fell on Jonah.(M) 8 So they asked him, “Tell us, who is responsible for making all this trouble for us? What kind of work do you do? Where do you come from? What is your country? From what people are you?”
9 He answered, “I am a Hebrew and I worship the Lord,(N) the God of heaven,(O) who made the sea(P) and the dry land.(Q)”
10 This terrified them and they asked, “What have you done?” (They knew he was running away from the Lord, because he had already told them so.)
11 The sea was getting rougher and rougher. So they asked him, “What should we do to you to make the sea calm down for us?”
12 “Pick me up and throw me into the sea,” he replied, “and it will become calm. I know that it is my fault that this great storm has come upon you.”(R)
13 Instead, the men did their best to row back to land. But they could not, for the sea grew even wilder than before.(S) 14 Then they cried out to the Lord, “Please, Lord, do not let us die for taking this man’s life. Do not hold us accountable for killing an innocent man,(T) for you, Lord, have done as you pleased.”(U) 15 Then they took Jonah and threw him overboard, and the raging sea grew calm.(V) 16 At this the men greatly feared(W) the Lord, and they offered a sacrifice to the Lord and made vows(X) to him.
Jonah’s Prayer
17 Now the Lord provided(Y) a huge fish to swallow Jonah,(Z) and Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.
