Honor the Father and the Son

16 For this reason the Jews (A)persecuted Jesus, [a]and sought to kill Him, because He had done these things on the Sabbath. 17 But Jesus answered them, (B)“My Father has been working until now, and I have been working.”

18 Therefore the Jews (C)sought all the more to kill Him, because He not only broke the Sabbath, but also said that God was His Father, (D)making Himself equal with God. 19 Then Jesus answered and said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, (E)the Son can do nothing of Himself, but what He sees the Father do; for whatever He does, the Son also does in like manner. 20 For (F)the Father loves the Son, and (G)shows Him all things that He Himself does; and He will show Him greater works than these, that you may marvel. 21 For as the Father raises the dead and gives life to them, (H)even so the Son gives life to whom He will. 22 For the Father judges no one, but (I)has committed all judgment to the Son, 23 that all should honor the Son just as they honor the Father. (J)He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent Him.

Life and Judgment Are Through the Son

24 “Most assuredly, I say to you, (K)he who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, (L)but has passed from death into life. 25 Most assuredly, I say to you, the hour is coming, and now is, when (M)the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God; and those who hear will live. 26 For (N)as the Father has life in Himself, so He has granted the Son to have (O)life in Himself, 27 and (P)has given Him authority to execute judgment also, (Q)because He is the Son of Man. 28 Do not marvel at this; for the hour is coming in which all who are in the graves will (R)hear His voice 29 (S)and come forth—(T)those who have done good, to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil, to the resurrection of condemnation. 30 (U)I can of Myself do nothing. As I hear, I judge; and My judgment is righteous, because (V)I do not seek My own will but the will of the Father who sent Me.

Our Inheritance Through Christ’s Blood

Therefore, (A)laying aside all malice, all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and all evil speaking, (B)as newborn babes, desire the pure (C)milk of the word, that you may grow [a]thereby, if indeed you have (D)tasted that the Lord is gracious.

The Chosen Stone and His Chosen People(E)

Coming to Him as to a living stone, (F)rejected indeed by men, but chosen by God and precious, you also, as living stones, are being built up a spiritual house, a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. Therefore it is also contained in the Scripture,

(G)“Behold, I lay in Zion
A chief cornerstone, elect, precious,
And he who believes on Him will by no means be put to shame.”

Therefore, to you who believe, He is precious; but to those who [b]are disobedient,

(H)“The stone which the builders rejected
Has become the chief cornerstone,”

and

(I)“A stone of stumbling
And a rock of offense.”

(J)They stumble, being disobedient to the word, (K)to which they also were appointed.

Solomon’s Love for a Shulamite Girl

The (A)song of songs, which is Solomon’s.

The Banquet

The [a]Shulamite

Let him kiss me with the kisses of his mouth—
(B)For [b]your love is better than wine.
Because of the fragrance of your good ointments,
Your name is ointment poured forth;
Therefore the virgins love you.
(C)Draw me away!

The Daughters of Jerusalem

(D)We will run after [c]you.

The Shulamite

The king (E)has brought me into his chambers.

The Daughters of Jerusalem

We will be glad and rejoice in [d]you.

We will remember your love more than wine.

The Shulamite

Rightly do they love you.

I am dark, but lovely,
O daughters of Jerusalem,
Like the tents of Kedar,
Like the curtains of Solomon.
Do not look upon me, because I am dark,
Because the sun has [e]tanned me.
My mother’s sons were angry with me;
They made me the keeper of the vineyards,
But my own (F)vineyard I have not kept.

(To Her Beloved)

Tell me, O you whom I love,
Where you feed your flock,
Where you make it rest at noon.
For why should I be as one who [f]veils herself
By the flocks of your companions?

The Beloved

If you do not know, (G)O fairest among women,
[g]Follow in the footsteps of the flock,
And feed your little goats
Beside the shepherds’ tents.
I have compared you, (H)my love,
(I)To my filly among Pharaoh’s chariots.
10 (J)Your cheeks are lovely with ornaments,
Your neck with chains of gold.

The Daughters of Jerusalem

11 We will make [h]you ornaments of gold
With studs of silver.

The Shulamite

12 While the king is at his table,
My [i]spikenard sends forth its fragrance.
13 A bundle of myrrh is my beloved to me,
That lies all night between my breasts.
14 My beloved is to me a cluster of henna blooms
In the vineyards of En Gedi.

The Beloved

15 (K)Behold, you are fair, [j]my love!
Behold, you are fair!
You have dove’s eyes.

The Shulamite

16 Behold, you are (L)handsome, my beloved!
Yes, pleasant!
Also our [k]bed is green.
17 The beams of our houses are cedar,
And our rafters of fir.

Israelites Will Be Punished in Egypt

44 The word that came to Jeremiah concerning all the Jews who dwell in the land of Egypt, who dwell at (A)Migdol, at (B)Tahpanhes, at (C)Noph,[a] and in the country of (D)Pathros, saying, “Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: ‘You have seen all the calamity that I have brought on Jerusalem and on all the cities of Judah; and behold, this day they are (E)a desolation, and no one dwells in them, because of their wickedness which they have committed to provoke Me to anger, in that they went (F)to burn incense and to (G)serve other gods whom they did not know, they nor you nor your fathers. However (H)I have sent to you all My servants the prophets, rising early and sending them, saying, “Oh, do not do this abominable thing that I hate!” But they did not listen or incline their ear to turn from their wickedness, to burn no incense to other gods. So My fury and My anger were poured out and kindled in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem; and they [b]are wasted and desolate, as it is this day.’

“Now therefore, thus says the Lord, the God of hosts, the God of Israel: ‘Why do you commit this great evil (I)against yourselves, to cut off from you man and woman, child and infant, out of Judah, leaving none to remain, in that you (J)provoke Me to wrath with the works of your hands, burning incense to other gods in the land of Egypt where you have gone to dwell, that you may cut yourselves off and be (K)a curse and a reproach among all the nations of the earth? Have you forgotten the wickedness of your fathers, the wickedness of the kings of Judah, the wickedness of their wives, your own wickedness, and the wickedness of your wives, which they committed in the land of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem? 10 They have not been (L)humbled,[c] to this day, nor have they (M)feared; they have not walked in My law or in My statutes that I set before you and your fathers.’

11 “Therefore thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: ‘Behold, (N)I will set My face against you for catastrophe and for [d]cutting off all Judah. 12 And I will take the remnant of Judah who have set their faces to go into the land of Egypt to dwell there, and (O)they shall all be consumed and fall in the land of Egypt. They shall be consumed by the sword and by famine. They shall die, from the least to the greatest, by the sword and by famine; and (P)they shall be an oath, an astonishment, a curse and a reproach! 13 (Q)For I will punish those who dwell in the land of Egypt, as I have punished Jerusalem, by the sword, by famine, and by pestilence, 14 so that none of the remnant of Judah who have gone into the land of Egypt to dwell there shall escape or survive, lest they return to the land of Judah, to which they (R)desire[e] to return and dwell. For (S)none shall return except those who escape.’ ”

15 Then all the men who knew that their wives had burned incense to other gods, with all the women who stood by, a great multitude, and all the people who dwelt in the land of Egypt, in Pathros, answered Jeremiah, saying: 16 As for the word that you have spoken to us in the name of the Lord, (T)we will not listen to you! 17 But we will certainly do (U)whatever has gone out of our own mouth, to burn incense to the (V)queen of heaven and pour out drink offerings to her, as we have done, we and our fathers, our kings and our princes, in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem. For then we had plenty of [f]food, were well-off, and saw no trouble. 18 But since we stopped burning incense to the queen of heaven and pouring out drink offerings to her, we have lacked everything and have been consumed by the sword and by famine.”

19 The women also said, (W)“And when we burned incense to the queen of heaven and poured out drink offerings to her, did we make cakes for her, to worship her, and pour out drink offerings to her without our husbands’ permission?

20 Then Jeremiah spoke to all the people—the men, the women, and all the people who had given him that answer—saying: 21 “The incense that you burned in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem, you and your fathers, your kings and your princes, and the people of the land, did not the Lord remember them, and did it not come into His mind? 22 So the Lord could no longer bear it, because of the evil of your doings and because of the abominations which you committed. Therefore your land is a desolation, an astonishment, a curse, and without an inhabitant, (X)as it is this day. 23 Because you have burned incense and because you have sinned against the Lord, and have not obeyed the voice of the Lord or walked in His law, in His statutes or in His testimonies, (Y)therefore this calamity has happened to you, as at this day.”

24 Moreover Jeremiah said to all the people and to all the women, “Hear the word of the Lord, all Judah who are in the land of Egypt! 25 Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, saying: ‘You and your wives have spoken with your mouths and fulfilled with your hands, saying, “We will surely keep our vows that we have made, to burn incense to the queen of heaven and pour out drink offerings to her.” You will surely keep your vows and perform your vows!’ 26 Therefore hear the word of the Lord, all Judah who dwell in the land of Egypt: ‘Behold, (Z)I have sworn by My (AA)great name,’ says the Lord, ‘that (AB)My name shall no more be named in the mouth of any man of Judah in all the land of Egypt, saying, “The Lord God lives.” 27 Behold, I will watch over them for adversity and not for good. And all the men of Judah who are in the land of Egypt (AC)shall be consumed by the sword and by famine, until there is an end to them. 28 Yet (AD)a small number who escape the sword shall return from the land of Egypt to the land of Judah; and all the remnant of Judah, who have gone to the land of Egypt to dwell there, shall know whose words will stand, Mine or theirs. 29 And this shall be a sign to you,’ says the Lord, ‘that I will punish you in this place, that you may know that My words will surely (AE)stand against you for adversity.’

30 “Thus says the Lord: ‘Behold, (AF)I will give Pharaoh Hophra king of Egypt into the hand of his enemies and into the hand of those who seek his life, as I gave (AG)Zedekiah king of Judah into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, his enemy who sought his life.’ ”

Assurance to Baruch

45 The (AH)word that Jeremiah the prophet spoke to (AI)Baruch the son of Neriah, when he had written these words in a book [g]at the instruction of Jeremiah, in the (AJ)fourth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah, saying, “Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, to you, O Baruch: ‘You said, “Woe is me now! For the Lord has added grief to my sorrow. I (AK)fainted in my sighing, and I find no rest.” ’

“Thus you shall say to him, ‘Thus says the Lord: “Behold, (AL)what I have built I will break down, and what I have planted I will pluck up, that is, this whole land. And do you seek great things for yourself? Do not seek them; for behold, (AM)I will bring adversity on all flesh,” says the Lord. “But I will give your (AN)life to you as a prize in all places, wherever you go.” ’ ”

Judgment on Egypt

46 The word of the Lord which came to Jeremiah the prophet against (AO)the nations. Against (AP)Egypt.

(AQ)Concerning the army of Pharaoh Necho, king of Egypt, which was by the River Euphrates in Carchemish, and which Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon (AR)defeated in the (AS)fourth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah:

“Order[h] the [i]buckler and shield,
And draw near to battle!
Harness the horses,
And mount up, you horsemen!
Stand forth with your helmets,
Polish the spears,
(AT)Put on the armor!
Why have I seen them dismayed and turned back?
Their mighty ones are beaten down;
They have speedily fled,
And did not look back,
For (AU)fear was all around,” says the Lord.
“Do not let the swift flee away,
Nor the mighty man escape;
They will (AV)stumble and fall
Toward the north, by the River Euphrates.

“Who is this coming up (AW)like a flood,
Whose waters move like the rivers?
Egypt rises up like a flood,
And its waters move like the rivers;
And he says, ‘I will go up and cover the earth,
I will destroy the city and its inhabitants.’
Come up, O horses, and rage, O chariots!
And let the mighty men come forth:
[j]The Ethiopians and [k]the Libyans who handle the shield,
And the Lydians (AX)who handle and bend the bow.
10 For this is (AY)the day of the Lord God of hosts,
A day of vengeance,
That He may avenge Himself on His adversaries.
(AZ)The sword shall devour;
It shall be [l]satiated and made drunk with their blood;
For the Lord God of hosts (BA)has a sacrifice
In the north country by the River Euphrates.

11 “Go(BB) up to Gilead and take balm,
(BC)O virgin, the daughter of Egypt;
In vain you will use many medicines;
(BD)You shall not be cured.
12 The nations have heard of your (BE)shame,
And your cry has filled the land;
For the mighty man has stumbled against the mighty;
They both have fallen together.”

Babylonia Will Strike Egypt

13 The word that the Lord spoke to Jeremiah the prophet, how Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon would come and (BF)strike the land of Egypt.

14 “Declare in Egypt, and proclaim in (BG)Migdol;
Proclaim in [m]Noph and in (BH)Tahpanhes;
Say, ‘Stand fast and prepare yourselves,
For the sword devours all around you.’
15 Why are your valiant men swept away?
They did not stand
Because the Lord drove them away.
16 He made many fall;
Yes, (BI)one fell upon another.
And they said, ‘Arise!
(BJ)Let us go back to our own people
And to the land of our nativity
From the oppressing sword.’
17 They cried there,
‘Pharaoh, king of Egypt, is but a noise.
He has passed by the appointed time!’

18 As I live,” says the King,
(BK)Whose name is the Lord of hosts,
“Surely as Tabor is among the mountains
And as Carmel by the sea, so he shall come.
19 O (BL)you daughter dwelling in Egypt,
Prepare yourself (BM)to go into captivity!
For [n]Noph shall be waste and desolate, without inhabitant.

20 “Egypt is a very pretty (BN)heifer,
But destruction comes, it comes (BO)from the north.
21 Also her mercenaries are in her midst like [o]fat bulls,
For they also are turned back,
They have fled away together.
They did not stand,
For (BP)the day of their calamity had come upon them,
The time of their punishment.
22 (BQ)Her noise shall go like a serpent,
For they shall march with an army
And come against her with axes,
Like those who chop wood.

23 “They shall (BR)cut down her forest,” says the Lord,
“Though it cannot be searched,
Because they are innumerable,
And more numerous than (BS)grasshoppers.
24 The daughter of Egypt shall be ashamed;
She shall be delivered into the hand
Of (BT)the people of the north.”

25 The Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, says: “Behold, I will bring punishment on [p]Amon of (BU)No,[q] and Pharaoh and Egypt, (BV)with their gods and their kings—Pharaoh and those who (BW)trust in him. 26 (BX)And I will deliver them into the hand of those who seek their lives, into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon and the hand of his servants. (BY)Afterward it shall be inhabited as in the days of old,” says the Lord.

God Will Preserve Israel(BZ)

27 “But(CA) do not fear, O My servant Jacob,
And do not be dismayed, O Israel!
For behold, I will (CB)save you from afar,
And your offspring from the land of their captivity;
Jacob shall return, have rest and be at ease;
No one shall make him afraid.
28 Do not fear, O Jacob My servant,” says the Lord,
“For I am with you;
For I will make a complete end of all the nations
To which I have driven you,
But I will not make (CC)a complete end of you.
I will rightly (CD)correct you,
For I will not leave you wholly unpunished.”
