Chapter 16

“I have told you this so that you may not fall away. They will expel you from the synagogues; in fact, the hour[f] is coming when everyone who kills you will think he is offering worship to God.(K) They will do this because they have not known either the Father or me.(L) I have told you this so that when their hour comes you may remember that I told you.(M)

Footnotes

  1. 15:20 The word I spoke to you: a reference to Jn 13:16.
  2. 15:21 On account of my name: the idea of persecution for Jesus’ name is frequent in the New Testament (Mt 10:22; 24:9; Acts 9:14). For John, association with Jesus’ name implies union with Jesus.
  3. 15:22, 24 Jesus’ words (spoken) and deeds (works) are the great motives of credibility. They have seen and hated: probably means that they have seen his works and still have hated; but the Greek can be read: “have seen both me and my Father and still have hated both me and my Father.” Works…that no one else ever did: so Yahweh in Dt 4:32–33.
  4. 15:25 In their law: law is here used as a larger concept than the Pentateuch, for the reference is to Ps 35:19 or Ps 69:5. See notes on Jn 10:34; 12:34. Their law reflects the argument of the church with the synagogue.
  5. 15:26 Whom I will send: in Jn 14:16, 26, the Paraclete is to be sent by the Father, at the request of Jesus. Here the Spirit comes from both Jesus and the Father in mission; there is no reference here to the eternal procession of the Spirit.
  6. 16:2 Hour: of persecution, not Jesus’ “hour” (see note on Jn 2:4).
  7. 16:4b–33 A duplicate of Jn 14:1–31 on departure and return.

The World’s Hatred

18 “If the world hates you, be aware that it hated me before it hated you. 19 If you belonged to the world,[a] the world would love you as its own. Because you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world—therefore the world hates you. 20 Remember the word that I said to you, ‘Servants[b] are not greater than their master.’ If they persecuted me, they will persecute you; if they kept my word, they will keep yours also. 21 But they will do all these things to you on account of my name, because they do not know him who sent me. 22 If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not have sin; but now they have no excuse for their sin. 23 Whoever hates me hates my Father also. 24 If I had not done among them the works that no one else did, they would not have sin. But now they have seen and hated both me and my Father. 25 It was to fulfill the word that is written in their law, ‘They hated me without a cause.’

26 “When the Advocate[c] comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who comes from the Father, he will testify on my behalf. 27 You also are to testify because you have been with me from the beginning.

16 “I have said these things to you to keep you from stumbling. They will put you out of the synagogues. Indeed, an hour is coming when those who kill you will think that by doing so they are offering worship to God. And they will do this because they have not known the Father or me. But I have said these things to you so that when their hour comes you may remember that I told you about them.

The World's Hatred

18 “If the world hates you, just remember that it has hated me first. 19 If you belonged to the world, then the world would love you as its own. But I chose you from this world, and you do not belong to it; that is why the world hates you. 20 (A)Remember what I told you: ‘Slaves are not greater than their master.’ If people persecuted me, they will persecute you too; if they obeyed my teaching, they will obey yours too. 21 But they will do all this to you because you are mine; for they do not know the one who sent me. 22 They would not have been guilty of sin if I had not come and spoken to them; as it is, they no longer have any excuse for their sin. 23 Whoever hates me hates my Father also. 24 They would not have been guilty of sin if I had not done among them the things that no one else ever did; as it is, they have seen what I did, and they hate both me and my Father. 25 (B)This, however, was bound to happen so that what is written in their Law may come true: ‘They hated me for no reason at all.’

26 “The Helper will come—the Spirit, who reveals the truth about God and who comes from the Father. I will send him to you from the Father, and he will speak about me. 27 And you, too, will speak about me, because you have been with me from the very beginning.

16 “I have told you this, so that you will not give up your faith. You will be expelled from the synagogues, and the time will come when those who kill you will think that by doing this they are serving God. People will do these things to you because they have not known either the Father or me. But I have told you this, so that when the time comes for them to do these things, you will remember what I told you.

Disciples’ Relation to the World

18 (A)If the world hates you, [a]you know that it has hated Me before it hated you. 19 If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own; but because you are not of the world, but (B)I chose you out of the world, (C)because of this the world hates you. 20 Remember the word that I said to you, ‘(D)A slave is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted Me, (E)they will persecute you as well; if they (F)followed My word, they will follow yours also. 21 But all these things they will do to you (G)on account of My name, (H)because they do not know the One who sent Me. 22 (I)If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not have [b]sin; but now they have no excuse for their sin. 23 The one who hates Me hates My Father also. 24 (J)If I had not done among them (K)the works which no one else did, they would not have [c]sin; but now they have both seen and hated Me and My Father as well. 25 But this has happened so that the word that is written in their (L)Law will be fulfilled: ‘(M)They hated Me for no reason.’

26 “When the [d](N)Helper comes, (O)whom I will send to you from the Father, namely, (P)the Spirit of truth who comes from the Father, (Q)He will testify about Me, 27 and [e](R)you are testifying as well, because you have been with Me (S)from the beginning.

Jesus’ Warning

16 (T)These things I have spoken to you so that you will not [f]be (U)led into sin. They will [g](V)ban you from the synagogue, yet (W)an hour is coming for everyone (X)who kills you to think that he is offering a [h]service to God. These things they will do (Y)because they have not known the Father nor Me. But these things I have spoken to you, (Z)so that when their hour comes, you [i]may remember that I told you of them. However, I did not say these things to you (AA)at the beginning, because I was with you.
