22 (A)Judas (not Iscariot) said to Him, “Lord, how is it that You will manifest Yourself to us, and not to the world?”

23 Jesus answered and said to him, “If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, (B)and We will come to him and make Our home with him. 24 He who does not love Me does not keep My words; and (C)the word which you hear is not Mine but the Father’s who sent Me.

The Gift of His Peace

25 “These things I have spoken to you while being present with you. 26 But (D)the [a]Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will (E)send in My name, (F)He will teach you all things, and bring to your (G)remembrance all things that I said to you. 27 (H)Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. 28 You have heard Me (I)say to you, ‘I am going away and coming back to you.’ If you loved Me, you would rejoice because [b]I said, (J)‘I am going to the Father,’ for (K)My Father is greater than I.

29 “And (L)now I have told you before it comes, that when it does come to pass, you may believe. 30 I will no longer talk much with you, (M)for the ruler of this world is coming, and he has (N)nothing in Me. 31 But that the world may know that I love the Father, and (O)as the Father gave Me commandment, so I do. Arise, let us go from here.

The Loveless Church

“To the [a]angel of the church of Ephesus write,

‘These things says (A)He who holds the seven stars in His right hand, (B)who walks in the midst of the seven golden lampstands: (C)“I know your works, your labor, your [b]patience, and that you cannot [c]bear those who are evil. And (D)you have tested those (E)who say they are apostles and are not, and have found them liars; and you have persevered and have patience, and have labored for My name’s sake and have (F)not become weary. Nevertheless I have this against you, that you have left your first love. Remember therefore from where you have fallen; repent and do the first works, (G)or else I will come to you quickly and remove your lampstand from its place—unless you repent. But this you have, that you hate the deeds of the Nicolaitans, which I also hate.

(H)“He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To him who overcomes I will give (I)to eat from (J)the tree of life, which is in the midst of the Paradise of God.” ’

The Persecuted Church

“And to the [d]angel of the church in Smyrna write,

‘These things says (K)the First and the Last, who was dead, and came to life: “I know your works, tribulation, and poverty (but you are (L)rich); and I know the blasphemy of (M)those who say they are Jews and are not, (N)but are a [e]synagogue of Satan. 10 (O)Do not fear any of those things which you are about to suffer. Indeed, the devil is about to throw some of you into prison, that you may be tested, and you will have tribulation ten days. (P)Be faithful until death, and I will give you (Q)the crown of life.

11 (R)“He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. He who overcomes shall not be hurt by (S)the second death.” ’

The Compromising Church

12 “And to the [f]angel of the church in Pergamos write,

‘These things says (T)He who has the sharp two-edged sword: 13 “I know your works, and where you dwell, where Satan’s throne is. And you hold fast to My name, and did not deny My faith even in the days in which Antipas was My faithful martyr, who was killed among you, where Satan dwells. 14 But I have a few things against you, because you have there those who hold the doctrine of (U)Balaam, who taught Balak to put a stumbling block before the children of Israel, (V)to eat things sacrificed to idols, (W)and to commit sexual immorality. 15 Thus you also have those who hold the doctrine of the Nicolaitans, [g]which thing I hate. 16 Repent, or else I will come to you quickly and (X)will fight against them with the sword of My mouth.

17 “He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To him who overcomes I will give some of the hidden (Y)manna to eat. And I will give him a white stone, and on the stone (Z)a new name written which no one knows except him who receives it.” ’

Bildad: How Can Man Be Righteous?

25 Then (A)Bildad the Shuhite answered and said:

“Dominion and fear belong to Him;
He makes peace in His high places.
[a]Is there any number to His armies?
Upon whom does (B)His light not rise?
(C)How then can man be righteous before God?
Or how can he be (D)pure who is born of a woman?
If even the moon does not shine,
And the stars are not pure in His (E)sight,
How much less man, who is (F)a maggot,
And a son of man, who is a worm?”

Job: Man’s Frailty and God’s Majesty

26 But Job answered and said:

“How have you helped him who is without power?
How have you saved the arm that has no strength?
How have you counseled one who has no wisdom?
And how have you declared sound advice to many?
To whom have you uttered words?
And whose spirit came from you?

“The dead tremble,
Those under the waters and those inhabiting them.
(G)Sheol is naked before Him,
And Destruction has no covering.
(H)He stretches out the north over empty space;
He hangs the earth on nothing.
(I)He binds up the water in His thick clouds,
Yet the clouds [b]are not broken under it.
He covers the face of His throne,
And spreads His cloud over it.
10 (J)He drew a circular horizon on the face of the waters,
At the boundary of light and darkness.
11 The pillars of heaven tremble,
And are [c]astonished at His rebuke.
12 (K)He stirs up the sea with His power,
And by His understanding He breaks up [d]the storm.
13 (L)By His Spirit He adorned the heavens;
His hand pierced (M)the fleeing serpent.
14 Indeed these are the mere edges of His ways,
And how small a whisper we hear of Him!
But the thunder of His power who can understand?”

Israel Has Rebelled Against God

“When I would have healed Israel,
Then the iniquity of Ephraim was uncovered,
And the wickedness of Samaria.
For (A)they have committed fraud;
A thief comes in;
A band of robbers [a]takes spoil outside.
They [b]do not consider in their hearts
That (B)I remember all their wickedness;
Now their own deeds have surrounded them;
They are before My face.
They make a (C)king glad with their wickedness,
And princes (D)with their lies.

“They(E) are all adulterers.
Like an oven heated by a baker—
He ceases stirring the fire after kneading the dough,
Until it is leavened.
In the day of our king
Princes have made him sick, [c]inflamed with (F)wine;
He stretched out his hand with scoffers.
They prepare their heart like an oven,
While they lie in wait;
[d]Their baker sleeps all night;
In the morning it burns like a flaming fire.
They are all hot, like an oven,
And have devoured their judges;
All their kings have fallen.
(G)None among them calls upon Me.

“Ephraim (H)has mixed himself among the peoples;
Ephraim is a cake unturned.
(I)Aliens have devoured his strength,
But he does not know it;
Yes, gray hairs are here and there on him,
Yet he does not know it.
10 And the (J)pride of Israel testifies to his face,
But (K)they do not return to the Lord their God,
Nor seek Him for all this.

Futile Reliance on the Nations

11 “Ephraim(L) also is like a silly dove, without [e]sense—
(M)They call to Egypt,
They go to (N)Assyria.
12 Wherever they go, I will (O)spread My net on them;
I will bring them down like birds of the air;
I will chastise them
(P)According to what their congregation has heard.

13 “Woe to them, for they have fled from Me!
Destruction to them,
Because they have transgressed against Me!
Though (Q)I redeemed them,
Yet they have spoken lies against Me.
14 (R)They did not cry out to Me with their heart
When they wailed upon their beds.

“They [f]assemble together for grain and new (S)wine,
[g]They rebel against Me;
15 Though I disciplined and strengthened their arms,
Yet they devise evil against Me;
16 They return, but not [h]to the Most High;
(T)They are like a treacherous bow.
Their princes shall fall by the sword
For the (U)cursings of their tongue.
This shall be their derision (V)in the land of Egypt.

The Apostasy of Israel

Set the [i]trumpet to your mouth!
He shall come (W)like an eagle against the house of the Lord,
Because they have transgressed My covenant
And rebelled against My law.
(X)Israel will cry to Me,
‘My God, (Y)we know You!’
Israel has rejected the good;
The enemy will pursue him.

“They(Z) set up kings, but not by Me;
They made princes, but I did not acknowledge them.
From their silver and gold
They made idols for themselves—
That they might be cut off.
Your [j]calf [k]is rejected, O Samaria!
My anger is aroused against them—
(AA)How long until they attain to innocence?
For from Israel is even this:
A (AB)workman made it, and it is not God;
But the calf of Samaria shall be broken to pieces.

“They(AC) sow the wind,
And reap the whirlwind.
The stalk has no bud;
It shall never produce meal.
If it should produce,
(AD)Aliens would swallow it up.
(AE)Israel is swallowed up;
Now they are among the Gentiles
(AF)Like a vessel in which is no pleasure.
For they have gone up to Assyria,
Like (AG)a wild donkey alone by itself;
Ephraim (AH)has hired lovers.
10 Yes, though they have hired among the nations,
Now (AI)I will gather them;
And they shall [l]sorrow a little,
Because of the [m]burden of (AJ)the king of princes.

11 “Because Ephraim has made many altars for sin,
They have become for him altars for sinning.
12 I have written for him (AK)the great things of My law,
But they were considered a strange thing.
13 For the sacrifices of My offerings (AL)they sacrifice flesh and eat it,
(AM)But the Lord does not accept them.
(AN)Now He will remember their iniquity and punish their sins.
They shall return to Egypt.

14 “For(AO) Israel has forgotten (AP)his Maker,
And has built [n]temples;
Judah also has multiplied (AQ)fortified cities;
But (AR)I will send fire upon his cities,
And it shall devour his [o]palaces.”
