⁸Then neighbors and others who knew him were confused to see a man so closely resembling the blind beggar running about.

Townspeople: Isn’t this the man we see every day sitting and begging in the streets?

New English Translation

⁸Then the neighbors and the people who had seen him previously^[a] as a beggar began saying,^[b] “Is this not the man^[c] who used to sit and beg?”

John 9:8 tn Or “formerly.”
John 9:8 tn An ingressive force (“began saying”) is present here because the change in status of the blind person provokes this new response from those who knew him.
