29 Assim, Pilatos, que era o governador, saiu ao encontro deles e perguntou: “Que queixa têm contra este homem?”
30 “Se não fosse malfeitor não to teríamos trazido”, retorquiram.
31 “Pois então levem-no e julguem-no vocês mesmos de acordo com a vossa Lei!”, tornou-lhes Pilatos.
“Mas queremos que seja morto e nós não podemos fazê-lo”, replicaram os judeus. 32 Assim se cumpriu a predição de Jesus acerca do modo como haveria de morrer.
33 Pilatos voltou para dentro do palácio e mandou que lhe levassem Jesus. “És o rei dos judeus?”, perguntou-lhe.
34 Jesus replicou: “Perguntas isso de ti mesmo ou são outros que o querem saber?”
35 “Sou porventura judeu?”, replicou Pilatos. “O teu povo e os principais sacerdotes é que te trouxeram aqui. Que fizeste?”
36 Então Jesus respondeu: “Não sou um rei terreno. Se o fosse, os meus discípulos teriam lutado, quando os judeus me prenderam. Mas o meu reino não é deste mundo.”
37 “Então és rei?”, perguntou Pilatos.
Jesus respondeu: “Tens razão em dizer que sou rei. De facto, foi para isso que nasci. E vim para trazer a verdade ao mundo. Todos os que amam a verdade escutam a minha voz.”
38 “O que é a verdade?”, perguntou Pilatos. Tornando a sair ao povo, anunciou: “Ele não é culpado de crime algum.

29 Então, Pilatos saiu e disse-lhes: Que acusação trazeis contra este homem? 30 Responderam e disseram-lhe: Se este não fosse malfeitor, não to entregaríamos. 31 Disse-lhes, pois, Pilatos: Levai-o vós e julgai-o segundo a vossa lei. Disseram-lhe, então, os judeus: A nós não nos é lícito matar pessoa alguma. 32 (Para que se cumprisse a palavra que Jesus tinha dito, significando de que morte havia de morrer.)
33 Tornou, pois, a entrar Pilatos na audiência, e chamou a Jesus, e disse-lhe: Tu és o rei dos judeus? 34 Respondeu-lhe Jesus: Tu dizes isso de ti mesmo ou disseram-to outros de mim? 35 Pilatos respondeu: Porventura, sou eu judeu? A tua nação e os principais dos sacerdotes entregaram-te a mim. Que fizeste? 36 Respondeu Jesus: O meu Reino não é deste mundo; se o meu Reino fosse deste mundo, lutariam os meus servos, para que eu não fosse entregue aos judeus; mas, agora, o meu Reino não é daqui. 37 Disse-lhe, pois, Pilatos: Logo tu és rei? Jesus respondeu: Tu dizes que eu sou rei. Eu para isso nasci e para isso vim ao mundo, a fim de dar testemunho da verdade. Todo aquele que é da verdade ouve a minha voz. 38 Disse-lhe Pilatos: Que é a verdade? E, dizendo isso, voltou até os judeus e disse-lhes: Não acho nele crime algum.

29 So Pilate came out to them and asked, “What charges are you bringing against this man?”
30 “If he were not a criminal,” they replied, “we would not have handed him over to you.”
31 Pilate said, “Take him yourselves and judge him by your own law.”
“But we have no right to execute anyone,” they objected. 32 This took place to fulfill what Jesus had said about the kind of death he was going to die.(A)
33 Pilate then went back inside the palace,(B) summoned Jesus and asked him, “Are you the king of the Jews?”(C)
34 “Is that your own idea,” Jesus asked, “or did others talk to you about me?”
35 “Am I a Jew?” Pilate replied. “Your own people and chief priests handed you over to me. What is it you have done?”
36 Jesus said, “My kingdom(D) is not of this world. If it were, my servants would fight to prevent my arrest by the Jewish leaders.(E) But now my kingdom is from another place.”(F)
37 “You are a king, then!” said Pilate.
Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. In fact, the reason I was born and came into the world is to testify to the truth.(G) Everyone on the side of truth listens to me.”(H)
38 “What is truth?” retorted Pilate. With this he went out again to the Jews gathered there and said, “I find no basis for a charge against him.(I)

29 Pilate then went out unto them, and said, What accusation bring ye against this man?
30 They answered and said unto him, If he were not a malefactor, we would not have delivered him up unto thee.
31 Then said Pilate unto them, Take ye him, and judge him according to your law. The Jews therefore said unto him, It is not lawful for us to put any man to death:
32 That the saying of Jesus might be fulfilled, which he spake, signifying what death he should die.
33 Then Pilate entered into the judgment hall again, and called Jesus, and said unto him, Art thou the King of the Jews?
34 Jesus answered him, Sayest thou this thing of thyself, or did others tell it thee of me?
35 Pilate answered, Am I a Jew? Thine own nation and the chief priests have delivered thee unto me: what hast thou done?
36 Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now is my kingdom not from hence.
37 Pilate therefore said unto him, Art thou a king then? Jesus answered, Thou sayest that I am a king. To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice.
38 Pilate saith unto him, What is truth? And when he had said this, he went out again unto the Jews, and saith unto them, I find in him no fault at all.
