Jesus Heals a Man Born Blind
9 As he passed by, he saw a man blind from birth. 2 And his disciples asked him, (A)“Rabbi, (B)who sinned, (C)this man or (D)his parents, that he was born blind?” 3 Jesus answered, “It was not that this man sinned, or his parents, but (E)that the works of God might be displayed in him. 4 We must (F)work the works of him who sent me (G)while it is day; night is coming, when no one can work. 5 As long as I am in the world, (H)I am the light of the world.” 6 Having said these things, (I)he spit on the ground and made mud with the saliva. (J)Then he anointed the man's eyes with the mud 7 and said to him, “Go, wash in (K)the pool of Siloam” (which means Sent). So he went and washed and (L)came back seeing.
8 The neighbors and those who had seen him before as a beggar were saying, (M)“Is this not the man who used to sit and beg?” 9 Some said, “It is he.” Others said, “No, but he is like him.” He kept saying, “I am the man.” 10 So they said to him, “Then how were your eyes opened?” 11 He answered, (N)“The man called Jesus made mud and anointed my eyes and said to me, ‘Go to Siloam and wash.’ So I went and washed and received my sight.” 12 They said to him, “Where is he?” He said, “I do not know.”
13 They brought to the Pharisees the man who had formerly been blind. 14 (O)Now it was a Sabbath day when Jesus made the mud and opened his eyes. 15 (P)So the Pharisees again asked him how he had received his sight. And he said to them, “He put mud on my eyes, and I washed, and I see.” 16 Some of the Pharisees said, “This man is not (Q)from God, (R)for he does not keep the Sabbath.” But others said, (S)“How can a man who is a sinner do such signs?” And (T)there was a division among them. 17 So they said again to the blind man, “What do you say about him, since he has opened your eyes?” He said, (U)“He is a prophet.”
18 (V)The Jews[a] did not believe that he had been blind and had received his sight, until they called the parents of the man who had received his sight 19 and asked them, “Is this your son, who you say was born blind? How then does he now see?” 20 His parents answered, “We know that this is our son and that he was born blind. 21 But how he now sees we do not know, nor do we know who opened his eyes. Ask him; he is of age. He will speak for himself.” 22 (His parents said these things (W)because they feared the Jews, for (X)the Jews had already agreed that if anyone should (Y)confess Jesus[b] to be Christ, (Z)he was to be put out of the synagogue. 23 Therefore his parents said, (AA)“He is of age; ask him.”)
24 So for the second time they called the man who had been blind and said to him, (AB)“Give glory to God. We know that (AC)this man is a sinner.” 25 He answered, “Whether he is a sinner I do not know. One thing I do know, that though I (AD)was blind, now I see.” 26 They said to him, “What did he do to you? How did he open your eyes?” 27 He answered them, (AE)“I have told you already, and you would not listen. Why do you want to hear it again? Do you also want to become his disciples?” 28 And they reviled him, saying, “You are his disciple, but (AF)we are disciples of Moses. 29 We know that God has spoken to Moses, but as for this man, (AG)we do not know where he comes from.” 30 The man answered, “Why, this is (AH)an amazing thing! (AI)You do not know where he comes from, and yet he opened my eyes. 31 We know that (AJ)God does not listen to sinners, but (AK)if anyone is a worshiper of God and does his will, God listens to him. 32 Never since the world began has it been heard that anyone opened the eyes of a man born blind. 33 (AL)If this man were not from God, he could do nothing.” 34 They answered him, (AM)“You were born in utter sin, and would you teach us?” And they (AN)cast him out.
35 Jesus heard that they had cast him out, and having found him he said, “Do you believe in (AO)the Son of Man?”[c] 36 He answered, (AP)“And who is he, sir, that I may believe in him?” 37 Jesus said to him, “You have seen him, and (AQ)it is he who is speaking to you.” 38 He said, “Lord, I believe,” and he worshiped him. 39 Jesus said, (AR)“For judgment I came into this world, (AS)that those who do not see may see, and (AT)those who see may become blind.” 40 Some of the Pharisees near him heard these things, and said to him, (AU)“Are we also blind?” 41 Jesus said to them, “If you were blind, (AV)you would have no guilt;[d] but now that you say, ‘We see,’ your guilt remains.

9 När han nu gick vägen fram, fick han se en man som var född blind.
2 Då frågade hans lärjungar honom och sade: »Rabbi, vilken har syndat, denne eller hans föräldrar, så att han har blivit född blind?»
3 Jesus svarade: »Det är varken denne som har syndat eller hans föräldrar, utan så har skett, för att Guds gärningar skulle uppenbaras på honom.
4 Medan dagen varar, måste vi göra dens gärningar, som har sänt mig; natten kommer, då ingen kan verka.
5 Så länge jag är i världen, är jag världens ljus.»
6 När han hade sagt detta, spottade han på jorden och gjorde en deg av spotten och lade degen på mannens ögon
7 och sade till honom: »Gå bort och två dig i dammen Siloam» (det betyder utsänd). Mannen gick då dit och tvådde sig; och när han kom igen, kunde han se.
8 Då sade grannarna och andra som förut hade sett honom såsom tiggare: »Är detta icke den man som att och tiggde?»
9 Somliga svarade: »Det är han.» Andra sade: »Nej, men han är lik honom.» Själv sade han: »Jag är den mannen.»
10 Och de frågade honom: »Huru blevo då dina ögon öppnade?»
11 Han svarade: »Den man som heter Jesus gjorde en deg och smorde därmed mina ögon och sade till mig: 'Gå bort till Siloam och två dig.' Jag gick då dit och tvådde mig, och så fick jag min syn.»
12 De frågade honom: »Var är den mannen?» Han svarade: »Det vet jag icke.»
13 Då förde de honom, mannen som förut hade varit blind, bort till fariséerna.
14 Och det var sabbat den dag då Jesus gjorde degen och öppnade hans ögon.
15 När nu jämväl fariséerna i sin ordning frågade honom huru han hade fått sin syn, svarade han dem: »Han lade en deg på mina ögon, och jag fick två mig, och nu kan jag se.»
16 Då sade några av fariséerna: »Den mannen är icke från Gud, eftersom han icke håller sabbaten.» Andra sade: »Huru skulle någon som är en syndare kunna göra sådana tecken?» Så funnos bland dem stridiga meningar.
17 Då frågade de åter den blinde: »Vad säger du själv om honom, då det ju var dina ögon han öppnade?» Han svarade: »En profet är han.»
18 Men judarna trodde icke att han hade varit blind och fått sin syn, förrän de hade kallat till sig mannen föräldrar, hans som hade fått sin syn.
19 Dem frågade de och sade: »Är detta eder son, den som I sägen vara född blind? Huru kommer det då till, att han nu kan se?»
20 Då svarade han föräldrar och sade: »Att denne är vår son, och att han föddes blind, det veta vi.
21 Men huru han nu kan se, det veta vi icke, ej heller veta vi vem som har öppnat hans ögon. Frågen honom själv; han är gammal nog, han må själv tala för sig.»
22 Detta sade hans föräldrar, därför att de fruktade judarna; ty judarna hade redan kommit överens om att den som bekände Jesus vara Messias, han skulle utstötas ur synagogan.
23 Därför var det som hans föräldrar sade: »Han är gammal nog; frågen honom själv.»
24 Då kallade de för andra gången till sig mannen som hade varit blind och sade till honom: »Säg nu sanningen, Gud till pris. Vi veta att denne man är en syndare.»
25 Han svarade: »Om han är en syndare vet jag icke; ett vet jag: att jag, som var blind, nu kan se.»
26 Då frågade de honom: »Vad gjorde han med dig? På vad sätt öppnade han dina ögon?»
27 Han svarade dem: »Jag har ju redan sagt eder det, men I hörden icke på mig. Varför viljen I då åter höra det? Kanske viljen också I bliva hans lärjungar?»
28 Då bannade de honom och sade: »Du är själv hans lärjunge; vi äro Moses' lärjungar.
29 Till Moses har Gud talat, det veta vi; men varifrån denne är, det veta vi icke.»
30 Mannen svarade och sade till dem: »Ja, däri ligger det förunderliga, att I icke veten varifrån han är, och ändå har han öppnat mina ögon.
31 Vi veta ju att Gud icke hör syndare, men också att om någon är gudfruktig och gör hans vilja, då hör han honom.
32 Aldrig förut har man hört att någon har öppnat ögonen på en som föddes blind.
33 Vore denne icke från Gud, så kunde han intet göra.»
34 De svarade och sade till honom: »Du är hel och hållen född i synd, och du vill undervisa oss!» Och så drevo de ut honom.
35 Jesus fick sedan höra att de hade drivit ut honom, och när han så träffade honom, sade han: »Tror du på Människosonen?»
36 Han svarade och sade: »Herre, vem är han då? Säg mig det, så att jag kan tro på honom.»
37 Jesus sade till honom: »Du har sett honom; det är han som talar med dig.»
38 Då sade han: »Herre, jag tror.» Och han föll ned för honom.
39 Och Jesus sade: »Till en dom har jag kommit hit i världen, för att de som icke se skola varda seende, och för att de som se skola varda blinda.»
40 När några fariséer som voro i hans närhet hörde detta, sade de till honom: »Äro då kanske också vi blinda?»
41 Jesus svarade dem: »Voren I blinda, så haden I icke synd. Men nu sägen I: 'Vi se', därför står eder synd kvar.»

Jesús sana a un ciego de nacimiento
9 A su paso, Jesús vio a un hombre que era ciego de nacimiento. 2 Y sus discípulos preguntaron:
—Rabí, para que este hombre haya nacido ciego, ¿quién pecó, él o sus padres?
3 —No está así debido a sus pecados ni a los de sus padres —respondió Jesús—, sino que esto sucedió para que la obra de Dios se hiciera evidente en su vida. 4 Mientras sea de día, tenemos que llevar a cabo la obra del que me envió. Viene la noche cuando nadie puede trabajar. 5 Mientras esté yo en el mundo, luz soy del mundo.
6 Dicho esto, escupió en el suelo, hizo barro con la saliva y se lo untó en los ojos al ciego, 7 diciéndole:
—Ve y lávate en el estanque de Siloé (que significa “Enviado”).
El ciego fue y se lavó, entonces al volver ya veía.
8 Sus vecinos y los que lo habían visto pedir limosna decían: «¿No es este el que se sienta a mendigar?». 9 Unos aseguraban: «Sí, es él». Otros decían: «No es él, sino que se le parece». Pero él insistía: «Soy yo».
10 —¿Cómo entonces se te han abierto los ojos? —le preguntaron.
11 Y él respondió:
—Ese hombre que se llama Jesús hizo un poco de barro, me lo untó en los ojos y me dijo: “Ve y lávate en Siloé”. Así que fui, me lavé y entonces pude ver.
12 —¿Y dónde está ese hombre? —le preguntaron.
—No lo sé —respondió.
Las autoridades investigan la sanidad del ciego
13 Llevaron ante los fariseos al que había sido ciego. 14 Era sábado cuando Jesús hizo el barro y le abrió los ojos al ciego. 15 Por eso los fariseos, a su vez, le preguntaron cómo había recibido la vista.
—Me untó barro en los ojos, me lavé y ahora veo —respondió.
16 Algunos de los fariseos comentaban: «Ese hombre no viene de parte de Dios, porque no respeta el sábado». Otros objetaban: «¿Cómo puede un pecador hacer semejantes señales?». Y había desacuerdo entre ellos.
17 Por eso interrogaron de nuevo al ciego:
—¿Y qué opinas tú de él? Fue a ti a quien te abrió los ojos.
—Yo digo que es profeta —contestó.
18 Pero los judíos no creían que el hombre hubiera sido ciego y ahora viera. Entonces llamaron a sus padres 19 y les preguntaron:
—¿Es este su hijo, el que dicen ustedes que nació ciego? ¿Cómo es que ahora puede ver?
20 —Sabemos que este es nuestro hijo —contestaron los padres—, y sabemos también que nació ciego. 21 Lo que no sabemos es cómo ahora puede ver ni quién le abrió los ojos. Pregúntenselo a él, que ya es mayor de edad y puede responder por sí mismo.
22 Sus padres contestaron así por miedo a los judíos, pues ya estos habían convenido que se expulsara de la sinagoga a todo el que reconociera que Jesús era el Cristo. 23 Por eso dijeron sus padres: «Pregúntenselo a él, que ya es mayor de edad».
24 Por segunda vez llamaron los judíos al que había sido ciego y le dijeron:
—¡Da gloria a Dios! A nosotros nos consta que ese hombre es pecador.
25 —Si es pecador, no lo sé —respondió el hombre—. Lo único que sé es que yo era ciego y ahora veo.
26 Pero ellos le insistieron:
—¿Qué te hizo? ¿Cómo te abrió los ojos?
27 Él respondió:
—Ya les dije y no me hicieron caso. ¿Por qué quieren oírlo de nuevo? ¿Es que también ustedes quieren hacerse sus discípulos?
28 Entonces lo insultaron y dijeron:
—¡Discípulo de ese lo serás tú! ¡Nosotros somos discípulos de Moisés! 29 Y sabemos que a Moisés le habló Dios; pero de este no sabemos ni de dónde salió.
30 —¡Allí está lo sorprendente! —respondió el hombre—: que ustedes no sepan de dónde salió y que a mí me haya abierto los ojos. 31 Sabemos que Dios no escucha a los pecadores, pero sí a los piadosos y a quienes hacen su voluntad. 32 Jamás se ha sabido que alguien le haya abierto los ojos a uno que nació ciego. 33 Si este hombre no viniera de parte de Dios, no podría hacer nada.
34 Ellos replicaron:
—Tú, que naciste sumido en pecado, ¿vas a darnos lecciones?
Y lo expulsaron.
La ceguera espiritual
35 Jesús se enteró de que habían expulsado a aquel hombre y al encontrarlo le preguntó:
—¿Crees en el Hijo del hombre?[a]
36 Él respondió:
—¿Quién es, Señor? Dímelo, para que crea en él.
37 —Pues ya lo has visto —contestó Jesús—; es el que está hablando contigo.
38 —Creo, Señor —declaró el hombre.
Y postrado lo adoró.
39 Entonces Jesús dijo:
—Yo he venido a este mundo para hacer justicia, para que los ciegos vean y los que ven se queden ciegos.
40 Algunos fariseos que estaban con él, al oírlo hablar así, le preguntaron:
—¿Qué? ¿Acaso también nosotros somos ciegos?
41 Jesús les contestó:
—Si fueran ciegos, no serían culpables de pecado, pero como afirman que ven, su pecado permanece.

9 As he went along, he saw a man blind from birth. 2 His disciples asked him, “Rabbi,(A) who sinned,(B) this man(C) or his parents,(D) that he was born blind?”
3 “Neither this man nor his parents sinned,” said Jesus, “but this happened so that the works of God might be displayed in him.(E) 4 As long as it is day,(F) we must do the works of him who sent me. Night is coming, when no one can work. 5 While I am in the world, I am the light of the world.”(G)
6 After saying this, he spit(H) on the ground, made some mud with the saliva, and put it on the man’s eyes. 7 “Go,” he told him, “wash in the Pool of Siloam”(I) (this word means “Sent”). So the man went and washed, and came home seeing.(J)
8 His neighbors and those who had formerly seen him begging asked, “Isn’t this the same man who used to sit and beg?”(K) 9 Some claimed that he was.
Others said, “No, he only looks like him.”
But he himself insisted, “I am the man.”
10 “How then were your eyes opened?” they asked.
11 He replied, “The man they call Jesus made some mud and put it on my eyes. He told me to go to Siloam and wash. So I went and washed, and then I could see.”(L)
12 “Where is this man?” they asked him.
“I don’t know,” he said.
The Pharisees Investigate the Healing
13 They brought to the Pharisees the man who had been blind. 14 Now the day on which Jesus had made the mud and opened the man’s eyes was a Sabbath.(M) 15 Therefore the Pharisees also asked him how he had received his sight.(N) “He put mud on my eyes,” the man replied, “and I washed, and now I see.”
16 Some of the Pharisees said, “This man is not from God, for he does not keep the Sabbath.”(O)
But others asked, “How can a sinner perform such signs?”(P) So they were divided.(Q)
17 Then they turned again to the blind man, “What have you to say about him? It was your eyes he opened.”
The man replied, “He is a prophet.”(R)
18 They(S) still did not believe that he had been blind and had received his sight until they sent for the man’s parents. 19 “Is this your son?” they asked. “Is this the one you say was born blind? How is it that now he can see?”
20 “We know he is our son,” the parents answered, “and we know he was born blind. 21 But how he can see now, or who opened his eyes, we don’t know. Ask him. He is of age; he will speak for himself.” 22 His parents said this because they were afraid of the Jewish leaders,(T) who already had decided that anyone who acknowledged that Jesus was the Messiah would be put out(U) of the synagogue.(V) 23 That was why his parents said, “He is of age; ask him.”(W)
24 A second time they summoned the man who had been blind. “Give glory to God by telling the truth,”(X) they said. “We know this man is a sinner.”(Y)
25 He replied, “Whether he is a sinner or not, I don’t know. One thing I do know. I was blind but now I see!”
26 Then they asked him, “What did he do to you? How did he open your eyes?”
27 He answered, “I have told you already(Z) and you did not listen. Why do you want to hear it again? Do you want to become his disciples too?”
28 Then they hurled insults at him and said, “You are this fellow’s disciple! We are disciples of Moses!(AA) 29 We know that God spoke to Moses, but as for this fellow, we don’t even know where he comes from.”(AB)
30 The man answered, “Now that is remarkable! You don’t know where he comes from, yet he opened my eyes. 31 We know that God does not listen to sinners. He listens to the godly person who does his will.(AC) 32 Nobody has ever heard of opening the eyes of a man born blind. 33 If this man were not from God,(AD) he could do nothing.”
34 To this they replied, “You were steeped in sin at birth;(AE) how dare you lecture us!” And they threw him out.(AF)
Spiritual Blindness
35 Jesus heard that they had thrown him out, and when he found him, he said, “Do you believe(AG) in the Son of Man?”(AH)
36 “Who is he, sir?” the man asked. “Tell me so that I may believe in him.”(AI)
37 Jesus said, “You have now seen him; in fact, he is the one speaking with you.”(AJ)
38 Then the man said, “Lord, I believe,” and he worshiped him.(AK)
39 Jesus said,[a] “For judgment(AL) I have come into this world,(AM) so that the blind will see(AN) and those who see will become blind.”(AO)
40 Some Pharisees who were with him heard him say this and asked, “What? Are we blind too?”(AP)
41 Jesus said, “If you were blind, you would not be guilty of sin; but now that you claim you can see, your guilt remains.(AQ)
