⁴⁰ Some of the Pharisees near him heard these things, and said to him, ^(A)“Are we also blind?” ⁴¹ Jesus said to them, “If you were blind, ^(B)you would have no guilt;^[a] but now that you say, ‘We see,’ your guilt remains.

^29 (A)“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you build the tombs of the prophets and decorate the monuments of the righteous, ³⁰ saying, ‘If we had lived in the days of our fathers, we would not have taken part with them in shedding the blood of the prophets.’ ³¹ Thus you witness against yourselves that you are ^(B)sons of those who murdered the prophets. ^32 (C)Fill up, then, the measure of your fathers. ³³ You serpents, ^(D)you brood of vipers, how are you to escape being sentenced to ^(E)hell? ^34 (F)Therefore ^(G)I send you ^(H)prophets and wise men and ^(I)scribes, ^(J)some of whom you will kill and crucify, and ^(K)some you will ^(L)flog in your synagogues and ^(M)persecute from town to town, ³⁵ so that on you may come all ^(N)the righteous blood shed on earth, from the blood of righteous ^(O)Abel to the blood of ^(P)Zechariah the son of Barachiah,^[a] whom you murdered between ^(Q)the sanctuary and ^(R)the altar. ³⁶ Truly, I say to you, ^(S)all these things will come upon this generation.

¹⁰ And not only so, but ^(A)also when Rebekah had conceived children by one man, our forefather Isaac, ¹¹ though they were not yet born and had done nothing either good or bad—in order that God's purpose of election might continue, not because of works but because of ^(B)him who calls—

Death in Adam, Life in Christ

¹² Therefore, just as ^(A)sin came into the world through one man, and ^(B)death through sin, and ^(C)so death spread to all men^[a] because ^(D)all sinned— ¹³ for sin indeed was in the world before the law was given, but ^(E)sin is not counted where there is no law. ¹⁴ Yet death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those whose sinning was not ^(F)like the transgression of Adam, ^(G)who was a type of ^(H)the one who was to come.
