³ Jesus answered, “Neither this man nor his parents sinned, ^(A)but that the works of God should be revealed in him.

⁴ When Jesus heard that, He said, “This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God may be glorified through it.”

Death Comes to All

9 For I ^[a]considered all this in my heart, so that I could declare it all: ^(A)that the righteous and the wise and their works are in the hand of God. People know neither love nor hatred by anything they see before them. ^2 (B)All things come alike to all:

⁴⁰ Jesus said to her, “Did I not say to you that if you would believe you would ^(A)see the glory of God?”

^5 (A)The blind see and the lame walk; the lepers are cleansed and the deaf hear; the dead are raised up and ^(B)the poor have the gospel preached to them.

⁷ And so it was, after the Lord had spoken these words to Job, that the Lord said to Eliphaz the Temanite, “My wrath is aroused against you and your two friends, for you have not spoken of Me what is right, as My servant Job has.

³ Then the Lord said to Satan, “Have you considered My servant Job, that there is none like him on the earth, ^(A)a blameless and upright man, one who fears God and shuns evil? And still he ^(B)holds fast to his integrity, although you incited Me against him, ^(C)to ^[a]destroy him without cause.”

⁴ So Satan answered the Lord and said, “Skin for skin! Yes, all that a man has he will give for his life. ^5 (D)But stretch out Your hand now, and touch his ^(E)bone and his flesh, and he will surely ^[b]curse You to Your face!”

^6 (F)And the Lord said to Satan, “Behold, he is in your hand, but spare his life.”

⁸ Then the Lord said to Satan, “Have you ^[a]considered My servant Job, that there is none like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man, one who fears God and ^[b]shuns evil?”

⁹ So Satan answered the Lord and said, “Does Job fear God for nothing? ^10 (A)Have You not ^[c]made a hedge around him, around his household, and around all that he has on every side? ^(B)You have blessed the work of his hands, and his possessions have increased in the land. ^11 (C)But now, stretch out Your hand and touch all that he has, and he will surely ^(D)curse^[d] You to Your face!”

¹² And the Lord said to Satan, “Behold, all that he has is in your ^[e]power; only do not lay a hand on his person.”

So Satan went out from the presence of the Lord.

²¹ So when they had further threatened them, they let them go, finding no way of punishing them, ^(A)because of the people, since they all ^(B)glorified God for ^(C)what had been done.
