³ Jesus answered, “It was not that this man sinned, or his parents, but ^(A)that the works of God might be displayed in him.

⁴ But when Jesus heard it he said, ^(A)“This illness does not lead to death. It is for ^(B)the glory of God, so that the Son of God may be glorified through it.”

Death Comes to All

9 But all this I laid to heart, examining it all, ^(A)how the righteous and the wise and their deeds are ^(B)in the hand of God. Whether it is love or hate, man does not know; both are before him. ^2 (C)It is the same for all, since ^(D)the same event happens to the righteous and the wicked, to the good and the evil,^[a] to the clean and the unclean, to him who sacrifices and him who does not sacrifice. As the good one is, so is the sinner, and he who ^(E)swears is as he who shuns an oath.

⁴⁰ Jesus said to her, ^(A)“Did I not tell you that if you believed you would see ^(B)the glory of God?”

^5 (A)the blind receive their sight and the lame walk, lepers^[a] are cleansed and the deaf hear, and the dead are raised up, and ^(B)the poor have good news preached to them.

The Lord Rebukes Job's Friends

⁷ After the Lord had spoken these words to Job, the Lord said to Eliphaz ^(A)the Temanite: “My anger burns against you and against your two friends, for you have not spoken of me what is right, as my servant Job has.

³ And the Lord said to Satan, “Have you considered my servant Job, that there is none like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man, who fears God and turns away from evil? He still ^(A)holds fast his integrity, although you incited me against him to destroy him ^(B)without reason.” ⁴ Then Satan answered the Lord and said, “Skin for skin! All that a man has he will give for his life. ⁵ But ^(C)stretch out your hand and touch his bone and his flesh, and he will ^(D)curse you to your face.” ⁶ And the Lord said to Satan, “Behold, he is in your hand; only spare his life.”

⁸ And the Lord said to Satan, “Have you ^(A)considered my ^(B)servant Job, that there is none like him on the earth, ^(C)a blameless and upright man, who fears God and turns away from evil?” ⁹ Then Satan answered the Lord and said, “Does Job fear God for no reason? ¹⁰ Have you not put ^(D)a hedge around him and his house and all that he has, on every side? You have ^(E)blessed the work of his hands, and his possessions have increased in the land. ¹¹ But ^(F)stretch out your hand and ^(G)touch all that he has, and he will ^(H)curse you ^(I)to your face.” ¹² And the Lord said to Satan, “Behold, all that he has is in your hand. Only against him do not stretch out your hand.” So Satan went out from the presence of the Lord.

²¹ And when they had further threatened them, they let them go, finding no way to punish them, ^(A)because of the people, for all were praising God ^(B)for what had happened.
