John 9:13-25

The Pharisees Investigate the Healing

¹³They brought to the Pharisees the man who had been blind. ¹⁴Now the day on which Jesus had made the mud and opened the man’s eyes was a Sabbath.^(A) ¹⁵Therefore the Pharisees also asked him how he had received his sight.^(B) “He put mud on my eyes,” the man replied, “and I washed, and now I see.”

¹⁶Some of the Pharisees said, “This man is not from God, for he does not keep the Sabbath.”^(C)

But others asked, “How can a sinner perform such signs?”^(D) So they were divided.^(E)

¹⁷Then they turned again to the blind man, “What have you to say about him? It was your eyes he opened.”

The man replied, “He is a prophet.”^(F)

¹⁸They^(G) still did not believe that he had been blind and had received his sight until they sent for the man’s parents. ¹⁹“Is this your son?” they asked. “Is this the one you say was born blind? How is it that now he can see?”

²⁰“We know he is our son,” the parents answered, “and we know he was born blind. ²¹But how he can see now, or who opened his eyes, we don’t know. Ask him. He is of age; he will speak for himself.” ²²His parents said this because they were afraid of the Jewish leaders,^(H) who already had decided that anyone who acknowledged that Jesus was the Messiah would be put out^(I) of the synagogue.^(J) ²³That was why his parents said, “He is of age; ask him.”^(K)

²⁴A second time they summoned the man who had been blind. “Give glory to God by telling the truth,”^(L) they said. “We know this man is a sinner.”^(M)

²⁵He replied, “Whether he is a sinner or not, I don’t know. One thing I do know. I was blind but now I see!”

Job

9 Then Job replied:

²“Indeed, I know that this is true.
    But how can mere mortals prove their innocence before God?^(A)
³Though they wished to dispute with him,^(B)
    they could not answer him one time out of a thousand.^(C)
⁴His wisdom^(D) is profound, his power is vast.^(E)
    Who has resisted^(F) him and come out unscathed?^(G)
⁵He moves mountains^(H) without their knowing it
    and overturns them in his anger.^(I)
⁶He shakes the earth^(J) from its place
    and makes its pillars tremble.^(K)
⁷He speaks to the sun and it does not shine;^(L)
    he seals off the light of the stars.^(M)
⁸He alone stretches out the heavens^(N)
    and treads on the waves of the sea.^(O)
⁹He is the Maker^(P) of the Bear^[a] and Orion,
    the Pleiades and the constellations of the south.^(Q)
¹⁰He performs wonders^(R) that cannot be fathomed,
    miracles that cannot be counted.^(S)
¹¹When he passes me, I cannot see him;
    when he goes by, I cannot perceive him.^(T)
¹²If he snatches away, who can stop him?^(U)
    Who can say to him, ‘What are you doing?’^(V)
¹³God does not restrain his anger;^(W)
    even the cohorts of Rahab^(X) cowered at his feet.

¹⁴“How then can I dispute with him?
    How can I find words to argue with him?^(Y)
¹⁵Though I were innocent, I could not answer him;^(Z)
    I could only plead^(AA) with my Judge^(AB) for mercy.^(AC)
¹⁶Even if I summoned him and he responded,
    I do not believe he would give me a hearing.^(AD)
¹⁷He would crush me^(AE) with a storm^(AF)
    and multiply^(AG) my wounds for no reason.^(AH)
¹⁸He would not let me catch my breath
    but would overwhelm me with misery.^(AI)
¹⁹If it is a matter of strength, he is mighty!^(AJ)
    And if it is a matter of justice, who can challenge him^[b]?^(AK)
²⁰Even if I were innocent, my mouth would condemn me;
    if I were blameless, it would pronounce me guilty.^(AL)
