A Man Born Blind Receives Sight
9 As he walked along, he saw a man blind from birth. 2 His disciples asked him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?” 3 Jesus answered, “Neither this man nor his parents sinned; he was born blind so that God’s works might be revealed in him. 4 We[a] must work the works of him who sent me[b] while it is day; night is coming when no one can work. 5 As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.” 6 When he had said this, he spat on the ground and made mud with the saliva and spread the mud on the man’s eyes, 7 saying to him, “Go, wash in the pool of Siloam” (which means Sent). Then he went and washed and came back able to see. 8 The neighbors and those who had seen him before as a beggar began to ask, “Is this not the man who used to sit and beg?” 9 Some were saying, “It is he.” Others were saying, “No, but it is someone like him.” He kept saying, “I am the man.” 10 But they kept asking him, “Then how were your eyes opened?” 11 He answered, “The man called Jesus made mud, spread it on my eyes, and said to me, ‘Go to Siloam and wash.’ Then I went and washed and received my sight.” 12 They said to him, “Where is he?” He said, “I do not know.”
The Pharisees Investigate the Healing
13 They brought to the Pharisees the man who had formerly been blind. 14 Now it was a sabbath day when Jesus made the mud and opened his eyes. 15 Then the Pharisees also began to ask him how he had received his sight. He said to them, “He put mud on my eyes. Then I washed, and now I see.” 16 Some of the Pharisees said, “This man is not from God, for he does not observe the sabbath.” But others said, “How can a man who is a sinner perform such signs?” And they were divided. 17 So they said again to the blind man, “What do you say about him? It was your eyes he opened.” He said, “He is a prophet.”
18 The Jews did not believe that he had been blind and had received his sight until they called the parents of the man who had received his sight 19 and asked them, “Is this your son, who you say was born blind? How then does he now see?” 20 His parents answered, “We know that this is our son, and that he was born blind; 21 but we do not know how it is that now he sees, nor do we know who opened his eyes. Ask him; he is of age. He will speak for himself.” 22 His parents said this because they were afraid of the Jews; for the Jews had already agreed that anyone who confessed Jesus[c] to be the Messiah[d] would be put out of the synagogue. 23 Therefore his parents said, “He is of age; ask him.”
24 So for the second time they called the man who had been blind, and they said to him, “Give glory to God! We know that this man is a sinner.” 25 He answered, “I do not know whether he is a sinner. One thing I do know, that though I was blind, now I see.” 26 They said to him, “What did he do to you? How did he open your eyes?” 27 He answered them, “I have told you already, and you would not listen. Why do you want to hear it again? Do you also want to become his disciples?” 28 Then they reviled him, saying, “You are his disciple, but we are disciples of Moses. 29 We know that God has spoken to Moses, but as for this man, we do not know where he comes from.” 30 The man answered, “Here is an astonishing thing! You do not know where he comes from, and yet he opened my eyes. 31 We know that God does not listen to sinners, but he does listen to one who worships him and obeys his will. 32 Never since the world began has it been heard that anyone opened the eyes of a person born blind. 33 If this man were not from God, he could do nothing.” 34 They answered him, “You were born entirely in sins, and are you trying to teach us?” And they drove him out.
Spiritual Blindness
35 Jesus heard that they had driven him out, and when he found him, he said, “Do you believe in the Son of Man?”[e] 36 He answered, “And who is he, sir?[f] Tell me, so that I may believe in him.” 37 Jesus said to him, “You have seen him, and the one speaking with you is he.” 38 He said, “Lord,[g] I believe.” And he worshiped him.

9 (A)Passando vide un uomo che era cieco fin dalla nascita. 2 I suoi discepoli lo interrogarono, dicendo: «Rabbì, chi ha peccato, lui o i suoi genitori, perché sia nato cieco?» 3 Gesù rispose: «Né lui ha peccato, né i suoi genitori; ma è così affinché le opere di Dio siano manifestate in lui. 4 Bisogna che io compia[a] le opere di colui che mi ha mandato mentre è giorno; la notte viene in cui nessuno può operare. 5 Mentre sono nel mondo, io sono la luce del mondo».
6 Detto questo, sputò in terra, fece del fango con la saliva, gli spalmò il fango sugli occhi[b] 7 e gli disse: «Va’, làvati nella vasca di Siloe» (che significa «mandato»). Egli dunque andò, si lavò e tornò che ci vedeva. 8 Perciò i vicini e quelli che l’avevano visto prima, perché era mendicante[c], dicevano: «Non è questo colui che stava seduto a chiedere l’elemosina?» 9 Alcuni dicevano: «È lui». Ed egli disse loro: «Mi ha messo del fango sugli occhi, mi sono lavato e ci vedo». 16 Perciò alcuni dei farisei dicevano: «Quest’uomo non è da Dio perché non osserva il sabato». Ma altri dicevano: «Come può un uomo peccatore compiere tali segni?» E vi era disaccordo tra di loro. 17 Essi dunque[h] dissero di nuovo al cieco: «Tu, che dici di lui, poiché ti ha aperto gli occhi?» Egli rispose: «È un profeta».
18 I Giudei però non credettero che lui fosse stato cieco e avesse recuperato la vista, finché non ebbero chiamato i genitori di colui che aveva recuperato la vista 19 e li ebbero interrogati così: «È questo vostro figlio che dite essere nato cieco? Com’è dunque che ora ci vede?» 20 I suoi genitori risposero: «Sappiamo che questo è nostro figlio e che è nato cieco; 21 ma come ora ci veda non lo sappiamo, né sappiamo chi gli abbia aperto gli occhi; domandatelo a lui; egli è adulto, parlerà lui di sé». 22 Questo dissero i suoi genitori perché avevano paura dei Giudei; infatti i Giudei avevano già stabilito che se uno avesse riconosciuto Gesù come Cristo, sarebbe stato espulso dalla sinagoga. 23 Per questo i suoi genitori dissero: «Egli è adulto, domandatelo a lui».
24 Essi dunque chiamarono per la seconda volta l’uomo che era stato cieco, e gli dissero: «Da’ gloria a Dio! Noi sappiamo che quest’uomo è un peccatore». 25 Egli dunque rispose [e disse]: «Se egli sia un peccatore, non lo so; una cosa so: che ero cieco e ora ci vedo». 26 Essi allora gli dissero [di nuovo]: «Che cosa ti ha fatto? Come ti ha aperto gli occhi?» 27 Egli rispose loro: «Ve l’ho già detto e voi non avete ascoltato. Perché volete udirlo di nuovo? Volete forse diventare suoi discepoli anche voi?» 28 Essi lo insultarono e dissero: «Tu sei discepolo di costui! Noi siamo discepoli di Mosè. 29 Noi sappiamo che a Mosè Dio ha parlato; ma in quanto a costui, non sappiamo di dove sia». 30 L’uomo rispose loro: «Questo poi è strano, che voi non sappiate di dove sia; eppure mi ha aperto gli occhi! 31 Si sa che Dio non esaudisce i peccatori; ma se uno è pio e fa la volontà di Dio, egli lo esaudisce. 32 Da che mondo è mondo non si è mai udito che uno abbia aperto gli occhi a uno nato cieco. 33 Se quest’uomo non fosse da Dio, non potrebbe fare nulla». 34 Essi gli risposero: «Tu sei tutto quanto nato nel peccato e insegni a noi?» E lo cacciarono fuori.
35 (C)Gesù udì che lo avevano cacciato fuori; e, trovatolo, [gli] disse: «Credi nel Figlio dell’uomo?[i]» 36 Quegli rispose: «Chi è, Signore, perché io creda in lui?» 37 Gesù gli disse: «Tu l’hai già visto; è colui che ti sta parlando». 38 Egli disse: «Signore, io credo». E l’adorò.

Die Heilung eines Blindgeborenen
9 Und als er vorbeiging, sah er einen Menschen, der blind war von Geburt an.
2 Und seine Jünger fragten ihn und sprachen: Rabbi, wer hat gesündigt, sodass dieser blind geboren ist, er oder seine Eltern?
3 Jesus antwortete: Weder dieser hat gesündigt noch seine Eltern; sondern an ihm sollten die Werke Gottes offenbar werden!
4 Ich muss die Werke dessen wirken, der mich gesandt hat, solange es Tag ist; es kommt die Nacht, da niemand wirken kann.
5 Solange ich in der Welt bin, bin ich das Licht der Welt.
6 Als er dies gesagt hatte, spie er auf die Erde und machte einen Brei mit dem Speichel und strich den Brei auf die Augen des Blinden
7 und sprach zu ihm: Geh hin, wasche dich im Teich Siloah (das heißt übersetzt: »Der Gesandte«)! Da ging er hin und wusch sich und kam sehend wieder.
8 Die Nachbarn nun, und die ihn zuvor als Blinden gesehen hatten, sprachen: Ist das nicht der, welcher dasaß und bettelte?
9 Etliche sagten: Er ist"s! — andere aber: Er sieht ihm ähnlich! Er selbst sagte: Ich bin"s!
10 Da sprachen sie zu ihm: Wie sind deine Augen geöffnet worden?
11 Er antwortete und sprach: Ein Mensch, der Jesus heißt, machte einen Brei und bestrich meine Augen und sprach zu mir: Geh hin zum Teich Siloah und wasche dich! Als ich aber hinging und mich wusch, wurde ich sehend.
12 Da sprachen sie zu ihm: Wo ist er? Er antwortete: Ich weiß es nicht!
Verhör des Geheilten durch die Pharisäer
13 Da führten sie ihn, der einst blind gewesen war, zu den Pharisäern.
14 Es war aber Sabbat, als Jesus den Teig machte und ihm die Augen öffnete.
15 Nun fragten ihn auch die Pharisäer wieder, wie er sehend geworden war. Und er sprach zu ihnen: Einen Brei hat er auf meine Augen gelegt, und ich wusch mich und bin nun sehend!
16 Da sprachen etliche von den Pharisäern: Dieser Mensch ist nicht von Gott, weil er den Sabbat nicht hält! Andere sprachen: Wie kann ein sündiger Mensch solche Zeichen tun? Und es entstand eine Spaltung unter ihnen.
17 Sie sprachen wiederum zu dem Blinden: Was sagst du von ihm, weil er dir die Augen geöffnet hat? Er aber sprach: Er ist ein Prophet!
18 Nun glaubten die Juden nicht von ihm, dass er blind gewesen und sehend geworden war, bis sie die Eltern des Sehendgewordenen gerufen hatten.
19 Und sie fragten sie und sprachen: Ist das euer Sohn, von dem ihr sagt, dass er blind geboren ist? Wieso ist er denn jetzt sehend?
20 Seine Eltern antworteten ihnen und sprachen: Wir wissen, dass dieser unser Sohn ist und dass er blind geboren ist;
21 wieso er aber jetzt sieht, das wissen wir nicht; und wer ihm die Augen geöffnet hat, wissen wir auch nicht. Er ist alt genug; fragt ihn selbst. Er soll selbst für sich reden!
22 Das sagten seine Eltern deshalb, weil sie die Juden fürchteten; denn die Juden waren schon übereingekommen, dass, wenn einer ihn als den Christus anerkennen würde, dieser aus der Synagoge ausgeschlossen werden sollte.[a]
23 Darum sprachen seine Eltern: Er ist alt genug; fragt ihn selbst!
24 Da riefen sie zum zweiten Mal den Menschen, der blind gewesen war, und sprachen zu ihm: Gib Gott die Ehre! Wir wissen, dass dieser Mensch ein Sünder ist.
25 Da antwortete jener und sprach: Ob er ein Sünder ist, weiß ich nicht. Eines weiß ich: dass ich blind war und jetzt sehend bin!
26 Sie sprachen aber wiederum zu ihm: Was hat er mit dir gemacht? Wie hat er dir die Augen geöffnet?
27 Er antwortete ihnen: Ich habe es euch schon gesagt, und ihr habt nicht darauf gehört; warum wollt ihr es noch einmal hören? Wollt auch ihr seine Jünger werden?
28 Sie beschimpften ihn nun und sprachen: Du bist sein Jünger! Wir aber sind Moses Jünger.
29 Wir wissen, dass Gott zu Mose geredet hat; von diesem aber wissen wir nicht, woher er ist.
30 Da antwortete der Mensch und sprach zu ihnen: Das ist doch verwunderlich, dass ihr nicht wisst, woher er ist, und er hat doch meine Augen geöffnet.
31 Wir wissen aber, dass Gott nicht auf Sünder hört; sondern wenn jemand gottesfürchtig ist und seinen Willen tut, den hört er.
32 Von Ewigkeit her hat man nicht gehört, dass jemand einem Blindgeborenen die Augen geöffnet hat.
33 Wenn dieser nicht von Gott wäre, so könnte er nichts tun!
34 Sie antworteten und sprachen zu ihm: Du bist ganz in Sünden geboren und willst uns lehren? Und sie stießen ihn hinaus.[b]
Blinde sehen und Sehende werden blind
35 Jesus hörte, dass sie ihn ausgestoßen hatten, und als er ihn fand, sprach er zu ihm: Glaubst du an den Sohn Gottes?
36 Er antwortete und sprach: Wer ist es, Herr, damit ich an ihn glaube?
37 Jesus aber sprach zu ihm: Du hast ihn gesehen, und der mit dir redet, der ist es!
38 Er aber sprach: Ich glaube, Herr! und fiel anbetend vor ihm nieder.

9 Egyszer útközben Jézus meglátott valakit, aki születésétől fogva vak volt. 2 Tanítványai megkérdezték tőle: „Mester, kinek a bűne miatt született ez vakon? A szülei vétkeztek, vagy ő maga?”
3 Jézus így felelt nekik: „Egyik sem! Sem ő, sem a szülei nem vétettek — nem emiatt született vakon. Azért történt így, hogy Isten rajta mutassa meg hatalmát. 4 Amíg nappal van, el kell végeznem azokat a feladatokat, amelyeket az Atya bízott rám, aki elküldött. Majd eljön az éjszaka, és akkor senki sem dolgozhat. 5 Amíg ezen a világon vagyok, én vagyok a világ világossága.”
6 Ezután a földre köpött, sarat készített, s azt a vak férfi szemére kente. 7 Azt mondta neki: „Menj, és mosakodj meg a Siloám-medencében!” (A „Siloám” azt jelenti: küldött.) A vak elment, megmosakodott, és amikor visszajött, már látott.

A farizeusok kihallgatják a vakon született embert
13 Ezután a koldust, aki nemrégen még vak volt, elvitték a farizeusokhoz. 14 (Amikor Jézus sarat készített, és meggyógyította a vak szemét, éppen szombat volt.) 15 A farizeusok is megkérdezték tőle, hogyan gyógyult meg.
Ő pedig így felelt nekik: „Sarat kent a szememre, megmosakodtam, és most látok.”
16 Néhány farizeus azt mondta: „Az az ember nem Istentől való, mert nem tartja meg a szombatot.”
„De hogyan tehetne egy bűnös ilyen csodát?” — kérdezték mások. Ebből azután vita kerekedett közöttük.
17 Ekkor újból a vakon születetthez fordultak: „Hát te mit mondasz róla most, hogy meggyógyította a szemedet?”
„Azt, hogy próféta” — felelte ő.
18 A vallási vezetők ekkor kétségbe vonták, hogy ez az ember valóban vakon született, és csak később gyógyult meg a szeme. Ezért odahívták a szüleit, és 19 megkérdezték tőlük: „Ez a fiatok, és valóban vakon született? Ha igen, akkor hogyan lehetséges, hogy most lát?”
20 A szülők ezt felelték: „Igen, ő a mi fiunk, és valóban vakon született, 21 de azt nem tudjuk, hogyan lehetséges, hogy most lát. Azt sem tudjuk, hogy ki gyógyította meg. Kérdezzétek őt, hiszen már felnőtt, majd ő megmondja!” 22 A szülők ezt azért mondták, mert féltek a vallási vezetőktől. Azok ugyanis már megegyeztek abban, hogy ha valaki Messiásnak mondja Jézust, azt ki kell tiltani a zsinagógából. Ezért mondták a szülők: 23 „Kérdezzétek őt, hiszen már felnőtt, majd ő megmondja!”
24 Ekkor a vallási vezetők másodszor is magukhoz hívatták azt, aki meggyógyult, és azt mondták neki: „Adj dicsőséget Istennek, és mondd meg az igazat! Mi tudjuk, hogy az az ember bűnös.”
25 Ő így felelt: „Azt nem tudom, hogy bűnös-e vagy sem, de azt tudom, hogy vak voltam, most pedig látok.”
26 Ekkor újra megkérdezték tőle: „Mit tett veled? Hogyan gyógyította meg a szemedet?”
27 „Már mondtam nektek, de nem hittetek nekem! Miért kérdezitek újra? Talán ti is a tanítványai akartok lenni?” — válaszolta.
28 Ekkor azok nekitámadtak, és sértegetni kezdték: „Te vagy az ő tanítványa! Mi Mózes tanítványai vagyunk! 29 Azt tudjuk, hogy Mózeshez szólt Isten, erről meg azt sem tudjuk, honnan jött.”
30 Az meg így válaszolt: „Hát, ez igazán nagyon különös! Azt sem tudjátok, hogy honnan jött, mégis megnyitotta a szememet! 31 Isten a bűnösöket nem hallgatja meg, igaz? De aki istenfélő, és teljesíti Isten akaratát, azt meghallgatja. 32 Soha senki nem hallott még olyat, hogy egy vakon születettnek a szemét valaki meggyógyította volna! 33 Ha az az ember nem Istentől jött volna, nem tudott volna segíteni rajtam!”
34 A vallási vezetők azonban letorkolták: „Te akarsz tanítani minket, aki mindenestül bűnben születtél?” Ezután kiközösítették a zsinagógai közösségből.
Azért jöttem, hogy a vakok lássanak
35 Jézus megtudta, hogy a vallási vezetők kitiltották ezt az embert a zsinagógából. Ezután találkozott vele, és megkérdezte tőle: „Hiszel-e az Emberfiában?”
36 Ő megkérdezte: „Ki az, Uram? Mondd meg, hogy higgyek benne!”
37 „Már láttad őt. Én vagyok az, aki veled beszélek” — válaszolta Jézus.
38 Erre a férfi ezt felelte: „Hiszek, Uram!” — leborult Jézus előtt, és imádta őt.

La guérison d’un aveugle
9 En partant, Jésus aperçut sur son chemin un homme qui était aveugle de naissance. 2 Ses disciples lui posèrent alors cette question : Dis-nous, Maître, pourquoi cet homme est-il né aveugle ? Est-ce à cause de son propre péché ou de celui de ses parents ?
3 Jésus répondit : Cela n’a pas de rapport avec son péché, ni avec celui de ses parents ; c’est pour qu’en lui tous puissent voir ce que Dieu est capable de faire. 4 Il nous faut accomplir les œuvres de celui qui m’a envoyé tant qu’il fait jour ; la nuit vient où plus personne ne pourra travailler. 5 Aussi longtemps que je suis encore dans le monde, je suis la lumière du monde.
6 Après avoir dit cela, Jésus cracha par terre et, avec sa salive, il fit un peu de boue qu’il appliqua sur les yeux de l’aveugle. 7 Puis il lui dit : Va te laver au réservoir de Siloé[a] (le mot « Siloé » veut dire : « envoyé »).
L’aveugle alla se laver et, à son retour, il voyait.
8 Ses voisins et ceux qui avaient l’habitude de le voir mendier dirent : Cet homme, n’est-ce pas celui qui était toujours assis en train de mendier ?
9 Les uns affirmaient : C’est bien lui.
D’autres le niaient : Ce n’est pas lui ; c’est quelqu’un qui lui ressemble.
Quant à lui, il disait : C’est bien moi.
10 Alors on le questionna : Comment se fait-il que tes yeux se soient ouverts ?
11 Il répondit : L’homme qui s’appelle Jésus a fait un peu de boue, m’en a frotté les yeux, puis il m’a dit : « Va à Siloé et lave-toi. » J’y suis allé, je me suis lavé et, d’un coup, j’ai vu clair.
12 – Et lui, demandèrent-ils, où est-il ?
– Je n’en sais rien, répondit-il.
L’enquête sur le miracle
13 On amena l’homme qui avait été aveugle devant les pharisiens. 14 Or, c’était un jour de sabbat que Jésus avait fait de la boue pour lui ouvrir les yeux. 15 Les pharisiens lui demandèrent donc, à leur tour, comment il avait recouvré la vue.
Il leur répondit : Il m’a mis de la boue sur les yeux, je me suis lavé, et maintenant j’y vois.
16 Là-dessus, quelques pharisiens déclarèrent : Cet homme ne peut pas venir de Dieu, puisqu’il ne respecte pas le sabbat.
Pourtant d’autres objectaient : Comment un homme pécheur aurait-il le pouvoir d’accomplir de tels signes miraculeux ?
Ils étaient donc divisés. 17 Alors ils interrogèrent de nouveau l’aveugle : Voyons, toi, que dis-tu de lui, puisque c’est à toi qu’il a ouvert les yeux ?
– C’est sûrement un prophète, répondit-il.
18 Mais ils refusèrent de croire que cet homme avait été aveugle et qu’il avait été guéri de sa cécité. Finalement, ils firent venir ses parents.
19 Ils leur demandèrent : Cet homme est-il bien votre fils ? Est-il réellement né aveugle ? Comment se fait-il qu’à présent il voie ?
20 – Nous sommes certains que c’est bien notre fils, répondirent les parents, et qu’il est né aveugle. 21 Mais comment il se fait qu’il voie à présent, nous ne le savons pas. Ou qui lui a rendu la vue, nous ne le savons pas davantage. Interrogez-le donc lui-même. Il est assez grand pour répondre sur ce qui le concerne.
22 Les parents parlaient ainsi parce qu’ils avaient peur des Juifs. En effet, ils avaient déjà décidé d’exclure de la synagogue tous ceux qui reconnaîtraient Jésus comme le Messie. 23 Voilà pourquoi les parents de l’aveugle avaient répondu : « Il est assez grand, interrogez-le donc lui-même. »
24 Les pharisiens firent donc venir une seconde fois celui qui avait été aveugle et lui dirent : Honore Dieu en disant la vérité. Cet homme est un pécheur, nous le savons.
25 – S’il est pécheur ou non, répondit-il, je n’en sais rien. Mais il y a une chose que je sais : j’étais aveugle et maintenant, je vois.
26 Ils lui demandèrent de nouveau : Qu’est-ce qu’il t’a fait ? Redis-nous comment il s’y est pris pour t’ouvrir les yeux.
27 – Je vous l’ai déjà dit, leur répondit-il, et vous ne m’avez pas écouté. Pourquoi tenez-vous à me le faire répéter ? Est-ce que, par hasard, vous avez l’intention de devenir vous aussi ses disciples ?
28 Alors, ils se mirent à l’injurier et ils lui lancèrent : C’est toi qui es son disciple ; nous, nous sommes les disciples de Moïse. 29 Nous savons que Dieu a parlé à Moïse ; mais celui-là, nous ne savons même pas d’où il vient.
30 – C’est étonnant, répliqua l’homme. Voilà quelqu’un qui m’a ouvert les yeux et vous, vous ne savez même pas d’où il est. 31 Tout le monde sait que Dieu n’exauce pas les pécheurs ; mais si quelqu’un est attaché à Dieu et fait sa volonté, il l’exauce. 32 Depuis que le monde est monde, jamais on n’a entendu dire que quelqu’un ait rendu la vue à un aveugle de naissance. 33 Si cet homme-là ne venait pas de Dieu, il n’aurait rien pu faire.
34 – Comment ! répondirent-ils, depuis ta naissance tu n’es que péché des pieds à la tête, et c’est toi qui veux nous faire la leçon !
Et ils le mirent à la porte.
Les vrais aveugles
35 Jésus apprit qu’ils l’avaient expulsé. Il alla le trouver et lui demanda : Crois-tu au Fils de l’homme ?
36 Il lui répondit : Qui est-ce ? Dis-le-moi, Seigneur[b], pour que je puisse croire en lui.
37 Jésus lui dit : Tu le vois de tes yeux. C’est lui-même qui te parle maintenant.
38 – Je crois, Seigneur, déclara l’homme, et il se prosterna devant lui[c].
