The Adulterous Woman

But Jesus went to (A)the Mount of Olives. Early in the morning He came again into the temple, and all the people were coming to Him; and (B)He sat down and began to teach them. The scribes and the Pharisees *brought a woman caught in adultery, and having set her in the center of the court, they *said to Him, “Teacher, this woman has been caught in adultery, in the very act. Now in the Law (C)Moses commanded us to stone such women; what then do You say?” They were saying this, (D)testing Him, (E)so that they might have grounds for accusing Him. But Jesus stooped down and with His finger wrote on the ground. But when they persisted in asking Him, (F)He straightened up, and said to them, (G)He who is without sin among you, let him be the (H)first to throw a stone at her.” Again He stooped down and wrote on the ground. When they heard it, they began to go out one by one, beginning with the older ones, and He was left alone, and the woman, where she was, in the center of the court. 10 (I)Straightening up, Jesus said to her, “Woman, where are they? Did no one condemn you?” 11 She said, “No one, [a]Lord.” And Jesus said, (J)I do not condemn you, either. Go. From now on (K)sin no more.”]

Jesus Is the Light of the World

12 Then Jesus again spoke to them, saying, (L)I am the Light of the world; (M)he who follows Me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the Light of life.” 13 So the Pharisees said to Him, “(N)You are testifying about Yourself; Your testimony is not [b]true.” 14 Jesus answered and said to them, (O)Even if I testify about Myself, My testimony is [c]true, for I know (P)where I came from and where I am going; but (Q)you do not know where I come from or where I am going. 15 (R)You judge [d]according to the flesh; (S)I am not judging anyone. 16 But even (T)if I do judge, My judgment is true; for I am not alone in it, but I and the Father who sent Me. 17 Even in (U)your law it has been written that the testimony of (V)two men is [e]true. 18 I am He who testifies about Myself, and (W)the Father who sent Me testifies about Me.” 19 So they were saying to Him, “Where is Your Father?” Jesus answered, “You know neither Me nor My Father; (X)if you knew Me, you would know My Father also.” 20 These words He spoke in (Y)the treasury, as (Z)He taught in the temple; and no one seized Him, because (AA)His hour had not yet come.

21 Then He said again to them, “I go away, and (AB)you will seek Me, and (AC)will die in your sin; where I am going, you cannot come.” 22 So (AD)the Jews were saying, “Surely He will not kill Himself, will He, since He says, (AE)Where I am going, you cannot come’?” 23 And He was saying to them, (AF)You are from below, I am from above; (AG)you are of this world, (AH)I am not of this world. 24 Therefore I said to you that you (AI)will die in your sins; for unless you believe that [f](AJ)I am He, (AK)you will die in your sins.” 25 So they were saying to Him, “Who are You?” Jesus said to them, [g]What have I been saying to you from the beginning? 26 I have many things to speak and to judge concerning you, but (AL)He who sent Me is true; and (AM)the things which I heard from Him, these I speak to the world.” 27 They did not realize that He had been speaking to them about the Father. 28 So Jesus said, “When you (AN)lift up the Son of Man, then you will know that [h](AO)I am He, and (AP)I do nothing on My own initiative, but I speak these things as the Father taught Me. 29 And He who sent Me is with Me; (AQ)He [i]has not left Me alone, for (AR)I always do the things that are pleasing to Him.” 30 As He spoke these things, (AS)many came to believe in Him.

The Truth Will Make You Free

31 So Jesus was saying to those Jews who had believed Him, (AT)If you continue in My word, then you are truly (AU)disciples of Mine; 32 and (AV)you will know the truth, and (AW)the truth will make you free.” 33 They answered Him, “(AX)We are Abraham’s descendants and have never yet been enslaved to anyone; how is it that You say, ‘You will become free’?”

34 Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, (AY)everyone who commits sin is the slave of sin. 35 (AZ)The slave does not remain in the house forever; (BA)the son does remain forever. 36 So if the Son (BB)makes you free, you will be free indeed. 37 I know that you are (BC)Abraham’s descendants; yet (BD)you seek to kill Me, because My word [j]has no place in you. 38 I speak the things which I have seen [k]with My Father; therefore you also do the things which you heard from (BE)your father.”

39 They answered and said to Him, “Abraham is (BF)our father.” Jesus *said to them, (BG)If you are Abraham’s children, do the deeds of Abraham. 40 But as it is, (BH)you are seeking to kill Me, a man who has (BI)told you the truth, which I heard from God; this Abraham did not do. 41 You are doing the deeds of (BJ)your father.” They said to Him, “We were not born of fornication; (BK)we have one Father: God.” 42 Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, (BL)you would love Me, (BM)for I proceeded forth and have come from God, for I have (BN)not even come on My own initiative, but [l](BO)He sent Me. 43 Why do you not understand [m](BP)what I am saying? It is because you cannot (BQ)hear My word. 44 (BR)You are of (BS)your father the devil, and (BT)you want to do the desires of your father. (BU)He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth because (BV)there is no truth in him. Whenever he speaks [n]a lie, he (BW)speaks from his own nature, for he is a liar and the father of [o]lies. 45 But because (BX)I speak the truth, you do not believe Me. 46 Which one of you convicts Me of sin? If (BY)I speak truth, why do you not believe Me? 47 (BZ)He who is of God hears the words of God; for this reason you do not hear them, because you are not of God.”

48 (CA)The Jews answered and said to Him, “Do we not say rightly that You are a (CB)Samaritan and (CC)have a demon?” 49 Jesus answered, “I do not (CD)have a demon; but I honor My Father, and you dishonor Me. 50 But (CE)I do not seek My glory; there is One who seeks and judges. 51 Truly, truly, I say to you, if anyone (CF)keeps My word he will never (CG)see death.” 52 (CH)The Jews said to Him, “Now we know that You (CI)have a demon. Abraham died, and the prophets also; and You say, ‘If anyone (CJ)keeps My word, he will never (CK)taste of death.’ 53 Surely You (CL)are not greater than our father Abraham, who died? The prophets died too; whom do You make Yourself out to be?” 54 Jesus answered, (CM)If I glorify Myself, My glory is nothing; (CN)it is My Father who glorifies Me, of whom you say, ‘He is our God’; 55 and (CO)you have not come to know Him, (CP)but I know Him; and if I say that I do not know Him, I will be (CQ)a liar like you, (CR)but I do know Him and (CS)keep His word. 56 (CT)Your father Abraham (CU)rejoiced [p]to see My day, and he saw it and was glad.” 57 (CV)So the Jews said to Him, “You are not yet fifty years old, and have You seen Abraham?” 58 Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham [q]was born, (CW)I am.” 59 Therefore they (CX)picked up stones to throw at Him, but Jesus [r](CY)hid Himself and went out of the temple.

Healing the Man Born Blind

As He passed by, He saw a man blind from birth. And His disciples asked Him, “(CZ)Rabbi, who sinned, (DA)this man or his (DB)parents, that he would be born blind?” Jesus answered, It was neither that this man sinned, nor his parents; but it was so (DC)that the works of God might be displayed in him. We must work the works of Him who sent Me (DD)as long as it is day; night is coming when no one can work. While I am in the world, I am (DE)the Light of the world.” When He had said this, He (DF)spat on the ground, and made clay of the spittle, and applied the clay to his eyes, and said to him, “Go, wash in (DG)the pool of Siloam” (which is translated, Sent). So he went away and (DH)washed, and (DI)came back seeing. Therefore the neighbors, and those who previously saw him as a beggar, were saying, “Is not this the one who used to (DJ)sit and beg?” Others were saying, “This is he,” still others were saying, “No, but he is like him.” [s]He kept saying, “I am the one.” 10 So they were saying to him, “How then were your eyes opened?” 11 He answered, “The man who is called Jesus made clay, and anointed my eyes, and said to me, ‘Go to (DK)Siloam and wash’; so I went away and washed, and I received sight.” 12 They said to him, “Where is He?” He *said, “I do not know.”

Controversy over the Man

13 They *brought to the Pharisees the man who was formerly blind. 14 (DL)Now it was a Sabbath on the day when Jesus made the clay and opened his eyes. 15 (DM)Then the Pharisees also were asking him again how he received his sight. And he said to them, “He applied clay to my eyes, and I washed, and I see.” 16 Therefore some of the Pharisees were saying, “This man is not from God, because He (DN)does not keep the Sabbath.” But others were saying, “How can a man who is a sinner perform such [t](DO)signs?” And (DP)there was a division among them. 17 So they *said to the blind man (DQ)again, “What do you say about Him, since He opened your eyes?” And he said, “He is a (DR)prophet.”

18 (DS)The Jews then did not believe it of him, that he had been blind and had received sight, until they called the parents of the very one who had received his sight, 19 and questioned them, saying, “Is this your son, who you say was born blind? Then how does he now see?” 20 His parents answered them and said, “We know that this is our son, and that he was born blind; 21 but how he now sees, we do not know; or who opened his eyes, we do not know. Ask him; he is of age, he will speak for himself.” 22 His parents said this because they (DT)were afraid of the Jews; for the Jews (DU)had already agreed that if anyone confessed Him to be [u]Christ, (DV)he was to be put out of the synagogue. 23 For this reason his parents said, “(DW)He is of age; ask him.”

24 So a second time they called the man who had been blind, and said to him, “(DX)Give glory to God; we know that (DY)this man is a sinner.” 25 He then answered, “Whether He is a sinner, I do not know; one thing I do know, that though I was blind, now I see.” 26 So they said to him, “What did He do to you? How did He open your eyes?” 27 He answered them, “(DZ)I told you already and you did not (EA)listen; why do you want to hear it again? You do not want to become His disciples too, do you?” 28 They reviled him and said, “You are His disciple, but (EB)we are disciples of Moses. 29 We know that God has spoken to Moses, but as for this man, (EC)we do not know where He is from.” 30 The man answered and said to them, “Well, here is an amazing thing, that you do not know where He is from, and yet He opened my eyes. 31 We know that (ED)God does not hear sinners; but if anyone is God-fearing and does His will, He hears him. 32 [v]Since the beginning of time it has never been heard that anyone opened the eyes of a person born blind. 33 (EE)If this man were not from God, He could do nothing.” 34 They answered him, “(EF)You were born entirely in sins, and are you teaching us?” So they (EG)put him out.

Jesus Affirms His Deity

35 Jesus heard that they had (EH)put him out, and finding him, He said, “Do you believe in the (EI)Son of Man?” 36 He answered, “(EJ)Who is He, [w]Lord, that I may believe in Him?” 37 Jesus said to him, “You have both seen Him, and (EK)He is the one who is talking with you.” 38 And he said, “Lord, I believe.” And he (EL)worshiped Him. 39 And Jesus said, (EM)For judgment I came into this world, so that (EN)those who do not see may see, and that (EO)those who see may become blind.” 40 Those of the Pharisees who were with Him heard these things and said to Him, “(EP)We are not blind too, are we?” 41 Jesus said to them, (EQ)If you were blind, you would have no sin; but [x]since you say, ‘(ER)We see,’ your sin remains.

Parable of the Good Shepherd

10 “Truly, truly, I say to you, he who does not enter by the door into the fold of the sheep, but climbs up some other way, he is (ES)a thief and a robber. But he who enters by the door is (ET)a shepherd of the sheep. To him the doorkeeper opens, and the sheep hear (EU)his voice, and he calls his own sheep by name and (EV)leads them out. When he puts forth all his own, he goes ahead of them, and the sheep follow him because they know (EW)his voice. A stranger they simply will not follow, but will flee from him, because they do not know (EX)the voice of strangers.” This (EY)figure of speech Jesus spoke to them, but they did not understand what those things were which He had been saying to them.

So Jesus said to them again, “Truly, truly, I say to you, I am (EZ)the door of the sheep. All who came before Me are (FA)thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not hear them. (FB)I am the door; if anyone enters through Me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture. 10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I came that they (FC)may have life, and [y]have it abundantly.

11 (FD)I am the good shepherd; the good shepherd (FE)lays down His life for the sheep. 12 He who is a hired hand, and not a (FF)shepherd, who is not the owner of the sheep, sees the wolf coming, and leaves the sheep and flees, and the wolf snatches them and scatters them. 13 He flees because he is a hired hand and is not concerned about the sheep. 14 (FG)I am the good shepherd, and (FH)I know My own and My own know Me, 15 even as (FI)the Father knows Me and I know the Father; and (FJ)I lay down My life for the sheep. 16 I have (FK)other sheep, which are not of this fold; I must bring them also, and they will hear My voice; and they will become (FL)one flock with (FM)one shepherd. 17 For this reason the Father loves Me, because I (FN)lay down My life so that I may take it again. 18 (FO)No one has taken it away from Me, but I (FP)lay it down on My own initiative. I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to take it up again. (FQ)This commandment I received from My Father.”

19 (FR)A division occurred again among the Jews because of these words. 20 Many of them were saying, “He (FS)has a demon and (FT)is insane. Why do you listen to Him?” 21 Others were saying, “These are not the sayings of one (FU)demon-possessed. (FV)A demon cannot open the eyes of the blind, can he?”

Jesus Asserts His Deity

22 At that time the Feast of the Dedication took place at Jerusalem; 23 it was winter, and Jesus was walking in the temple in the portico of (FW)Solomon. 24 (FX)The Jews then gathered around Him, and were saying to Him, “How long [z]will You keep us in suspense? If You are [aa]the Christ, tell us (FY)plainly.” 25 Jesus answered them, (FZ)I told you, and you do not believe; (GA)the works that I do in My Father’s name, these testify of Me. 26 But you do not believe because (GB)you are not of My sheep. 27 My sheep (GC)hear My voice, and (GD)I know them, and they follow Me; 28 and I give (GE)eternal life to them, and they will never perish; and (GF)no one will snatch them out of My hand. 29 [ab]My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand. 30 (GG)I and the Father are [ac]one.”

31 The Jews (GH)picked up stones again to stone Him. 32 Jesus answered them, “I showed you many good works from the Father; for which of them are you stoning Me?” 33 The Jews answered Him, “For a good work we do not stone You, but for (GI)blasphemy; and because You, being a man, (GJ)make Yourself out to be God.” 34 Jesus answered them, “Has it not been written in (GK)your (GL)Law, ‘(GM)I said, you are gods’? 35 If he called them gods, to whom the word of God came (and the Scripture cannot be broken), 36 do you say of Him, whom the Father (GN)sanctified and (GO)sent into the world, ‘You are blaspheming,’ because I said, ‘(GP)I am the Son of God’? 37 (GQ)If I do not do the works of My Father, do not believe Me; 38 but if I do them, though you do not believe Me, believe (GR)the works, so that you may [ad]know and understand that (GS)the Father is in Me, and I in the Father.” 39 Therefore (GT)they were seeking again to seize Him, and (GU)He eluded their grasp.

40 And He went away (GV)again beyond the Jordan to the place where John was first baptizing, and He was staying there. 41 Many came to Him and were saying, “While John performed no (GW)sign, yet (GX)everything John said about this man was true.” 42 (GY)Many believed in Him there.

The Death and Resurrection of Lazarus

11 Now a certain man was sick, Lazarus of (GZ)Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister (HA)Martha. It was the Mary who (HB)anointed (HC)the Lord with ointment, and wiped His feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick. So the sisters sent word to Him, saying, “(HD)Lord, behold, (HE)he whom You love is sick.” But when Jesus heard this, He said, “This sickness is not to end in death, but for (HF)the glory of God, so that the Son of God may be glorified by it.” Now Jesus loved (HG)Martha and her sister and Lazarus. So when He heard that he was sick, He then stayed two days longer in the place where He was. Then after this He *said to the disciples, (HH)Let us go to Judea again.” The disciples *said to Him, “(HI)Rabbi, the Jews were just now seeking (HJ)to stone You, and are You going there again?” Jesus answered, (HK)Are there not twelve hours in the day? If anyone walks in the day, he does not stumble, because he sees the light of this world. 10 But if anyone walks in the night, he stumbles, because the light is not in him.” 11 This He said, and after that He *said to them, “Our (HL)friend Lazarus (HM)has fallen asleep; but I go, so that I may awaken him out of sleep.” 12 The disciples then said to Him, “Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will [ae]recover.” 13 Now (HN)Jesus had spoken of his death, but they thought that He was speaking of [af]literal sleep. 14 So Jesus then said to them plainly, “Lazarus is dead, 15 and I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, so that you may believe; but let us go to him.” 16 (HO)Therefore Thomas, who is called [ag](HP)Didymus, said to his fellow disciples, “Let us also go, so that we may die with Him.”

17 So when Jesus came, He found that he had already been in the tomb (HQ)four days. 18 Now (HR)Bethany was near Jerusalem, about [ah]two miles off; 19 and many of (HS)the Jews had come to (HT)Martha and Mary, (HU)to console them concerning their brother. 20 (HV)Martha therefore, when she heard that Jesus was coming, went to meet Him, but (HW)Mary [ai]stayed at the house. 21 Martha then said to Jesus, “(HX)Lord, (HY)if You had been here, my brother would not have died. 22 Even now I know that (HZ)whatever You ask of God, God will give You.” 23 Jesus *said to her, “Your brother will rise again.” 24 Martha *said to Him, “(IA)I know that he will rise again in the resurrection on the last day.” 25 Jesus said to her, (IB)I am the resurrection and the life; he who believes in Me will live even if he dies, 26 and everyone who lives and believes in Me (IC)will never die. Do you believe this?” 27 She *said to Him, “Yes, Lord; I have believed that You are [aj](ID)the Christ, the Son of God, even [ak](IE)He who comes into the world.”

28 When she had said this, she (IF)went away and called Mary her sister, saying secretly, “(IG)The Teacher is here and is calling for you.” 29 And when she heard it, she *got up quickly and was coming to Him.

30 Now Jesus had not yet come into the village, but (IH)was still in the place where Martha met Him. 31 (II)Then the Jews who were with her in the house, and (IJ)consoling her, when they saw that Mary got up quickly and went out, they followed her, supposing that she was going to the tomb to weep there. 32 Therefore, when Mary came where Jesus was, she saw Him, and fell at His feet, saying to Him, “(IK)Lord, (IL)if You had been here, my brother would not have died.” 33 When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and (IM)the Jews who came with her also weeping, He (IN)was deeply moved in spirit and [al](IO)was troubled, 34 and said, “Where have you laid him?” They *said to Him, “Lord, come and see.” 35 Jesus (IP)wept. 36 So (IQ)the Jews were saying, “See how He (IR)loved him!” 37 But some of them said, “Could not this man, who (IS)opened the eyes of the blind man, [am]have kept this man also from dying?”

38 So Jesus, again being deeply moved within, *came to the tomb. Now it was a (IT)cave, and a stone was lying against it. 39 Jesus *said, “Remove the stone.” Martha, the sister of the deceased, *said to Him, “Lord, by this time [an]there will be a stench, for he has been dead (IU)four days.” 40 Jesus *said to her, (IV)Did I not say to you that if you believe, you will see the glory of God?” 41 So they removed the (IW)stone. Then Jesus (IX)raised His eyes, and said, (IY)Father, I thank You that You have heard Me. 42 I knew that You always hear Me; but (IZ)because of the [ao]people standing around I said it, so that they may believe that (JA)You sent Me.” 43 When He had said these things, He cried out with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come forth.” 44 The man who had died came forth, (JB)bound hand and foot with wrappings, and (JC)his face was wrapped around with a cloth. Jesus *said to them, “Unbind him, and let him go.”

45 (JD)Therefore many of the Jews (JE)who came to Mary, and (JF)saw what He had done, believed in Him. 46 But some of them went to the (JG)Pharisees and told them the things which Jesus had done.

Conspiracy to Kill Jesus

47 Therefore (JH)the chief priests and the Pharisees (JI)convened a (JJ)council, and were saying, “What are we doing? For this man is performing many [ap](JK)signs. 48 If we let Him go on like this, all men will believe in Him, and the Romans will come and take away both our (JL)place and our nation.” 49 But one of them, (JM)Caiaphas, (JN)who was high priest that year, said to them, “You know nothing at all, 50 nor do you take into account that (JO)it is expedient for you that one man die for the people, and that the whole nation not perish.” 51 Now he did not say this [aq]on his own initiative, but (JP)being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus was going to die for the nation, 52 and not for the nation only, but in order that He might also (JQ)gather together into one the children of God who are scattered abroad. 53 So from that day on they (JR)planned together to kill Him.

54 Therefore Jesus (JS)no longer continued to walk publicly among the Jews, but went away from there to the country near the wilderness, into a city called (JT)Ephraim; and there He stayed with the disciples.

55 Now (JU)the Passover of the Jews was near, and many went up to Jerusalem out of the country before the Passover (JV)to purify themselves. 56 So they (JW)were seeking for Jesus, and were saying to one another as they stood in the temple, “What do you think; that He will not come to the feast at all?” 57 Now (JX)the chief priests and the Pharisees had given orders that if anyone knew where He was, he was to report it, so that they might seize Him.
