8 1 but Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. 2 (A)Early in the morning he came again to the temple. All the people came to him, and (B)he sat down and taught them. 3 The scribes and the Pharisees brought a woman who had been caught in adultery, and placing her in the midst 4 they said to him, “Teacher, this woman has been caught in the act of adultery. 5 Now (C)in the Law, Moses commanded us (D)to stone such women. So what do you say?” 6 This they said (E)to test him, (F)that they might have some charge to bring against him. Jesus bent down and wrote with his finger on the ground. 7 And as they continued to ask him, he stood up and said to them, (G)“Let him who is without sin among you (H)be the first to throw a stone at her.” 8 And once more he bent down and wrote on the ground. 9 But when they heard it, they went away one by one, beginning with the older ones, and Jesus was left alone with the woman standing before him. 10 Jesus stood up and said to her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?” 11 She said, “No one, Lord.” And Jesus said, (I)“Neither do I condemn you; go, and from now on (J)sin no more.”]]
I Am the Light of the World
12 (K)Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, (L)“I am the light of the world. Whoever (M)follows me will not (N)walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” 13 So the Pharisees said to him, (O)“You are bearing witness about yourself; your testimony is not true.” 14 Jesus answered, “Even if I do bear witness about myself, (P)my testimony is true, for I know (Q)where I came from and (R)where I am going, but (S)you do not know where I come from or where I am going. 15 (T)You judge according to the flesh; (U)I judge no one. 16 Yet even if I do judge, (V)my judgment is true, for (W)it is not I alone who judge, but I and the Father[a] who sent me. 17 (X)In your Law it is written that the testimony of two people is true. 18 I am the one who bears witness about myself, and (Y)the Father who sent me bears witness about me.” 19 They said to him therefore, “Where is your Father?” Jesus answered, (Z)“You know neither me nor my Father. (AA)If you knew me, you would know my Father also.” 20 These words he spoke in (AB)the treasury, as he taught in the temple; but (AC)no one arrested him, because (AD)his hour had not yet come.
21 So he said to them again, (AE)“I am going away, and (AF)you will seek me, and (AG)you will die in your sin. Where I am going, you cannot come.” 22 So the Jews said, (AH)“Will he kill himself, since he says, ‘Where I am going, you cannot come’?” 23 He said to them, (AI)“You are from below; I am from above. (AJ)You are of this world; (AK)I am not of this world. 24 I told you that you (AL)would die in your sins, for (AM)unless you believe that (AN)I am he you will die in your sins.” 25 So they said to him, (AO)“Who are you?” Jesus said to them, “Just what I have been telling you from the beginning. 26 I have much to say about you and much to judge, but (AP)he who sent me is true, and I declare (AQ)to the world (AR)what I have heard from him.” 27 They did not understand that (AS)he had been speaking to them about the Father. 28 So Jesus said to them, “When you have (AT)lifted up the Son of Man, (AU)then you will know that (AV)I am he, and that (AW)I do nothing on my own authority, but (AX)speak just as the Father taught me. 29 And (AY)he who sent me is with me. (AZ)He has not left me alone, for (BA)I always do the things that are pleasing to him.” 30 As he was saying these things, (BB)many believed in him.
The Truth Will Set You Free
31 So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, (BC)“If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, 32 and you will (BD)know the truth, and the truth (BE)will set you free.” 33 They answered him, (BF)“We are offspring of Abraham and have never been enslaved to anyone. How is it that you say, ‘You will become free’?”
34 Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, (BG)everyone who practices sin is a slave[b] to sin. 35 (BH)The slave does not remain in the house forever; (BI)the son remains forever. 36 So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. 37 I know that you are offspring of Abraham; yet (BJ)you seek to kill me because my word finds no place in you. 38 (BK)I speak of what I have seen with my Father, and you do what you have heard (BL)from your father.”
You Are of Your Father the Devil
39 They answered him, (BM)“Abraham is our father.” Jesus said to them, (BN)“If you were Abraham's children, you would be doing the works Abraham did, 40 but now (BO)you seek to kill me, a man who has told you the truth (BP)that I heard from God. This is not what Abraham did. 41 You are doing the works your father did.” They said to him, (BQ)“We were not born of sexual immorality. We have (BR)one Father—even God.” 42 Jesus said to them, (BS)“If God were your Father, you would love me, for (BT)I came from God and (BU)I am here. (BV)I came not of my own accord, but (BW)he sent me. 43 (BX)Why do you not understand what I say? It is because you cannot (BY)bear to hear my word. 44 (BZ)You are of your father the devil, and your will is to do your father's desires. (CA)He was a murderer from the beginning, and (CB)does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. (CC)When he lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a liar and the father of lies. 45 But because I tell the truth, you do not believe me. 46 Which one of you convicts me of sin? If I tell the truth, why do you not believe me? 47 (CD)Whoever is of God hears the words of God. (CE)The reason why you do not hear them is that (CF)you are not of God.”
Before Abraham Was, I Am
48 The Jews answered him, “Are we not right in saying that you are a Samaritan and (CG)have a demon?” 49 Jesus answered, “I do not have a demon, but (CH)I honor my Father, and you dishonor me. 50 Yet (CI)I do not seek my own glory; there is One who seeks it, and he is the judge. 51 Truly, truly, (CJ)I say to you, if anyone keeps my word, he will never (CK)see death.” 52 The Jews said to him, “Now we know that you have a demon! (CL)Abraham died, as did the prophets, yet (CM)you say, ‘If anyone keeps my word, he will never (CN)taste death.’ 53 (CO)Are you greater than our father Abraham, who died? And the prophets died! Who do you make yourself out to be?” 54 Jesus answered, (CP)“If I glorify myself, my glory is nothing. (CQ)It is my Father who glorifies me, (CR)of whom you say, ‘He is our God.’[c] 55 But (CS)you have not known him. (CT)I know him. If I were to say that I do not know him, I would be (CU)a liar (CV)like you, but I do know him and I keep his word. 56 (CW)Your father Abraham (CX)rejoiced (CY)that he would see my day. (CZ)He saw it and was glad.” 57 So the Jews said to him, “You are not yet fifty years old, and have you seen Abraham?”[d] 58 Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, (DA)I am.” 59 So (DB)they picked up stones to throw at him, but Jesus hid himself and went out of the temple.

8 1 Pero Jesús se dirigió al Monte de los Olivos, 2 y al día siguiente, al amanecer, volvió al templo. La gente se le acercó, y él se sentó y comenzó a enseñarles.
3 Los maestros de la ley y los fariseos llevaron entonces a una mujer, a la que habían sorprendido cometiendo adulterio. La pusieron en medio de todos los presentes, 4 y dijeron a Jesús:
—Maestro, esta mujer ha sido sorprendida en el acto mismo de cometer adulterio. 5 En la ley, Moisés nos ordenó que se matara a pedradas a esta clase de mujeres. ¿Tú qué dices?
6 Ellos preguntaron esto para ponerlo a prueba, y tener así de qué acusarlo. Pero Jesús se inclinó y comenzó a escribir en la tierra con el dedo. 7 Luego, como seguían preguntándole, se enderezó y les dijo:
—Aquel de ustedes que no tenga pecado, que le tire la primera piedra.
8 Y volvió a inclinarse y siguió escribiendo en la tierra. 9 Al oír esto, uno tras otro comenzaron a irse, y los primeros en hacerlo fueron los más viejos. Cuando Jesús se encontró solo con la mujer, que se había quedado allí, 10 se enderezó y le preguntó:
—Mujer, ¿dónde están? ¿Ninguno te ha condenado?
11 Ella le contestó:
—Ninguno, Señor.
Jesús le dijo:
—Tampoco yo te condeno; ahora, vete y no vuelvas a pecar.]
Jesús, la luz del mundo
12 Jesús se dirigió otra vez a la gente, diciendo:
—Yo soy la luz del mundo; el que me sigue, tendrá la luz que le da vida, y nunca andará en la oscuridad.
13 Los fariseos le dijeron:
—Tú estás dando testimonio a favor tuyo: ese testimonio no tiene valor.
14 Jesús les contestó:
—Mi testimonio sí tiene valor, aunque lo dé yo mismo a mi favor. Pues yo sé de dónde vine y a dónde voy; en cambio, ustedes no lo saben. 15 Ustedes juzgan según los criterios humanos. Yo no juzgo a nadie; 16 pero si juzgo, mi juicio está de acuerdo con la verdad, porque no juzgo yo solo, sino que el Padre que me envió juzga conmigo. 17 En la ley de ustedes está escrito que cuando dos testigos dicen lo mismo, su testimonio tiene valor. 18 Pues bien, yo mismo soy un testigo a mi favor, y el Padre que me envió es el otro testigo.
19 Le preguntaron:
—¿Dónde está tu padre?
Jesús les contestó:
—Ustedes no me conocen a mí, ni tampoco a mi Padre; si me conocieran a mí, también conocerían a mi Padre.
20 Jesús dijo estas cosas mientras enseñaba en el templo, en el lugar donde estaban los cofres de las ofrendas. Pero nadie lo arrestó, porque todavía no había llegado su hora.
«A donde yo voy, ustedes no pueden ir»
21 Jesús les volvió a decir:
—Yo me voy, y ustedes me van a buscar, pero morirán en su pecado. A donde yo voy, ustedes no pueden ir.
22 Los judíos dijeron:
—¿Acaso estará pensando en matarse, y por eso dice que no podemos ir a donde él va?
23 Jesús les dijo:
—Ustedes son de aquí abajo, pero yo soy de arriba; ustedes son de este mundo, pero yo no soy de este mundo. 24 Por eso les dije que morirán en sus pecados; porque si no creen que Yo Soy, morirán en sus pecados.
25 Entonces le preguntaron:
—¿Quién eres tú?
Jesús les respondió:
—En primer lugar, ¿por qué he de hablar con ustedes? 26 Tengo mucho que decir y que juzgar de ustedes, pero el que me ha enviado dice la verdad, y lo que yo le digo al mundo es lo mismo que le he oído decir a él.
27 Pero ellos no entendieron que les hablaba del Padre. 28 Por eso les dijo:
—Cuando ustedes levanten en alto al Hijo del hombre, reconocerán que Yo Soy, y que no hago nada por mi propia cuenta; solamente digo lo que el Padre me ha enseñado. 29 Porque el que me ha enviado está conmigo; mi Padre no me ha dejado solo, porque yo siempre hago lo que a él le agrada.
30 Cuando Jesús dijo esto, muchos creyeron en él.
Los hijos de Dios y los esclavos del pecado
31 Jesús les dijo a los judíos que habían creído en él:
—Si ustedes se mantienen fieles a mi palabra, serán de veras mis discípulos; 32 conocerán la verdad, y la verdad los hará libres.
33 Ellos le contestaron:
—Nosotros somos descendientes de Abraham, y nunca hemos sido esclavos de nadie; ¿cómo dices tú que seremos libres?
34 Jesús les dijo:
—Les aseguro que todos los que pecan son esclavos del pecado. 35 Un esclavo no pertenece para siempre a la familia; pero un hijo sí pertenece para siempre a la familia. 36 Así que, si el Hijo los hace libres, ustedes serán verdaderamente libres. 37 Ya sé que ustedes son descendientes de Abraham; pero quieren matarme porque no aceptan mi palabra. 38 Yo hablo de lo que el Padre me ha mostrado; así también ustedes, hagan lo que del Padre han escuchado.
39 Ellos le dijeron:
—¡Nuestro padre es Abraham!
Pero Jesús les contestó:
—Si ustedes fueran de veras hijos de Abraham, harían lo que él hizo. 40 Sin embargo, aunque les he dicho la verdad que Dios me ha enseñado, ustedes quieren matarme. ¡Abraham nunca hizo nada así! 41 Ustedes hacen lo mismo que hace su padre.
Ellos le dijeron:
—¡Nosotros no somos hijos bastardos; tenemos un solo Padre, que es Dios!
42 Jesús les contestó:
—Si de veras Dios fuera su padre, ustedes me amarían, porque yo vengo de Dios y aquí estoy. No he venido por mi propia cuenta, sino que Dios me ha enviado. 43 ¿Por qué no pueden entender ustedes mi mensaje? Pues simplemente porque no pueden escuchar mi palabra. 44 El padre de ustedes es el diablo; ustedes le pertenecen, y tratan de hacer lo que él quiere. El diablo ha sido un asesino desde el principio. No se mantiene en la verdad, y nunca dice la verdad. Cuando dice mentiras, habla como lo que es; porque es mentiroso y es el padre de la mentira. 45 Pero como yo digo la verdad, ustedes no me creen. 46 ¿Quién de ustedes puede demostrar que yo tengo algún pecado? Y si digo la verdad, ¿por qué no me creen? 47 El que es de Dios, escucha las palabras de Dios; pero como ustedes no son de Dios, no quieren escuchar.
Cristo existe desde antes de Abraham
48 Los judíos le dijeron entonces:
—Tenemos razón cuando decimos que eres un samaritano y que tienes un demonio.
49 Jesús les contestó:
—No tengo ningún demonio. Lo que hago es honrar a mi Padre; en cambio, ustedes me deshonran. 50 Yo no busco mi gloria; hay alguien que la busca, y él es el que juzga. 51 Les aseguro que quien hace caso de mi palabra, no morirá.
52 Los judíos le contestaron:
—Ahora estamos seguros de que tienes un demonio. Abraham y todos los profetas murieron, y tú dices: “El que hace caso de mi palabra, no morirá.” 53 ¿Acaso eres tú más que nuestro padre Abraham? Él murió, y los profetas también murieron. ¿Quién te has creído que eres?
54 Jesús les contestó:
—Si yo me glorifico a mí mismo, mi gloria no vale nada. Pero el que me glorifica es mi Padre, el mismo que ustedes dicen que es su Dios. 55 Pero ustedes no lo conocen. Yo sí lo conozco; y si dijera que no lo conozco, sería yo tan mentiroso como ustedes. Pero ciertamente lo conozco, y hago caso de su palabra. 56 Abraham, el antepasado de ustedes, se alegró porque iba a ver mi día; y lo vio, y se llenó de gozo.
57 Los judíos dijeron a Jesús:
—Todavía no tienes cincuenta años, ¿y dices que has visto a Abraham?
58 Jesús les contestó:
—Les aseguro que yo existo desde antes que existiera Abraham.
59 Entonces ellos tomaron piedras para arrojárselas; pero Jesús se escondió y salió del templo.

Die Ehebrecherin
8 Jesus aber ging an den Ölberg. 2 Und am Morgen früh stellte er sich wieder im Tempel ein, und alles Volk kam zu ihm, und er setzte sich und lehrte sie.
3 Da brachten die Schriftgelehrten und Pharisäer ein Weib zu ihm, die beim Ehebruch ergriffen worden war, stellten sie in die Mitte 4 und sprachen zu ihm: Meister, dieses Weib ist auf der Tat beim Ehebruch ergriffen worden. 5 Im Gesetz aber hat uns Mose geboten, solche zu steinigen. Was sagst nun du? 6 Das sagten sie aber, um ihn zu versuchen, damit sie ihn anklagen könnten.
Jesus aber bückte sich nieder und schrieb mit dem Finger auf die Erde. 7 Als sie nun dabei verharrten, ihn zu fragen, richtete er sich auf und sprach zu ihnen: Wer unter euch ohne Sünde ist, der werfe den ersten Stein auf sie! 8 Und er bückte sich wiederum nieder und schrieb auf die Erde.
9 Als sie aber das hörten, gingen sie <von ihrem Gewissen gestraft> einer nach dem andern hinaus, die Ältesten zuerst; Jesus aber ward allein gelassen, mit dem Weib, das in der Mitte stand. 10 Da richtete sich Jesus auf und sprach zu ihr: Weib, wo sind deine Ankläger? Hat dich niemand verdammt?
11 Sie sprach: Herr, niemand! Jesus sprach zu ihr: So verurteile ich dich auch nicht. Gehe hin und sündige hinfort nicht mehr!
Jesus, das Licht der Welt. Seine göttliche Berufung und Herkunft
12 Nun redete Jesus wieder zu ihnen und sprach: Ich bin das Licht der Welt. Wer mir nachfolgt, wird nicht in der Finsternis wandeln, sondern er wird das Licht des Lebens haben.
13 Da sprachen die Pharisäer zu ihm: Du zeugst von dir selbst; dein Zeugnis ist nicht wahr!
14 Jesus antwortete und sprach zu ihnen: Auch wenn ich von mir selbst zeuge, so ist mein Zeugnis wahr, denn ich weiß, woher ich gekommen bin und wohin ich gehe; ihr aber wisset nicht, woher ich komme und wohin ich gehe. 15 Ihr richtet nach dem Fleische; ich richte niemand. 16 Aber auch wenn ich richte, so ist mein Gericht wahr; denn ich bin nicht allein, sondern ich und der Vater, der mich gesandt hat. 17 Es steht aber auch in eurem Gesetze geschrieben, daß das Zeugnis zweier Menschen wahr sei. 18 Ich bin es, der ich von mir selbst zeuge, und es zeugt von mir der Vater, der mich gesandt hat. 19 Da sprachen sie zu ihm: Wo ist dein Vater?
Jesus antwortete: Ihr kennet weder mich noch meinen Vater; wenn ihr mich kenntet, so würdet ihr auch meinen Vater kennen. 20 Diese Worte redete Jesus bei dem Gotteskasten[a], als er im Tempel lehrte; und niemand griff ihn, denn seine Stunde war noch nicht gekommen.
21 Nun sprach Jesus wiederum zu ihnen: Ich gehe fort, und ihr werdet mich suchen und in eurer Sünde sterben. Wohin ich gehe, dahin könnt ihr nicht kommen! 22 Da sagten die Juden: Will er sich etwa selbst töten, daß er spricht: Wohin ich gehe, dahin könnt ihr nicht kommen? 23 Er aber sprach zu ihnen: Ihr seid von unten her, ich bin von oben her. Ihr seid von dieser Welt, ich bin nicht von dieser Welt. 24 Darum habe ich euch gesagt, daß ihr in euren Sünden sterben werdet; denn wenn ihr nicht glaubet, daß ich es bin[b], so werdet ihr in euren Sünden sterben.
25 Da sagten sie zu ihm: Wer bist du? Und Jesus sprach zu ihnen: Erstens das, was ich euch eben sage! 26 Ich habe vieles über euch zu reden und zu richten; aber der, welcher mich gesandt hat, ist wahrhaftig; und was ich von ihm gehört habe, das rede ich zu der Welt.
27 Sie verstanden aber nicht, daß er vom Vater zu ihnen redete. 28 Darum sprach Jesus: Wenn ihr des Menschen Sohn erhöht haben werdet, dann werdet ihr erkennen, daß ich es bin; und von mir selbst tue ich nichts, sondern wie mich mein Vater gelehrt hat, so rede ich. 29 Und der, welcher mich gesandt hat, ist mit mir; er läßt mich nicht allein, denn ich tue allezeit, was ihm gefällt. 30 Als er solches redete, glaubten viele an ihn.
Abrahams Kinder oder Kinder des Teufels?
31 Da sprach Jesus zu den Juden, die an ihn gläubig geworden waren: Wenn ihr in meinem Worte bleibet, so seid ihr wahrhaftig meine Jünger, 32 und ihr werdet die Wahrheit erkennen, und die Wahrheit wird euch frei machen! 33 Sie antworteten ihm: Wir sind Abrahams Same und sind nie jemandes Knechte gewesen; wie sprichst du denn: Ihr sollt frei werden?
34 Jesus antwortete ihnen: Wahrlich, wahrlich, ich sage euch: Wer Sünde tut, ist der Sünde Knecht. 35 Der Knecht aber bleibt nicht ewig im Hause; der Sohn bleibt ewig. 36 Wird euch nun der Sohn frei machen, so seid ihr wirklich frei. 37 Ich weiß, daß ihr Abrahams Same seid; aber ihr suchet mich zu töten, denn mein Wort findet keinen Raum in euch. 38 Ich rede, was ich bei meinem Vater gesehen habe; so tut auch ihr, was ihr von eurem Vater gehört habt.
39 Sie antworteten und sprachen zu ihm: Unser Vater ist Abraham! Jesus spricht zu ihnen: Wäret ihr Abrahams Kinder, so tätet ihr Abrahams Werke. 40 Nun aber suchet ihr mich zu töten, einen Menschen, der euch die Wahrheit gesagt hat, welche ich von Gott gehört habe; das hat Abraham nicht getan. 41 Ihr tut die Werke eures Vaters. Da sprachen sie zu ihm: Wir sind nicht unehelich geboren, wir haben einen Vater, Gott!
42 Da sprach Jesus zu ihnen: Wäre Gott euer Vater, so würdet ihr mich lieben, denn ich bin von Gott ausgegangen und gekommen; denn nicht von mir selbst bin ich gekommen, sondern er hat mich gesandt. 43 Warum versteht ihr meine Rede nicht? Denn ihr könnt ja mein Wort nicht hören! 44 Ihr seid von dem Vater, dem Teufel, und was euer Vater begehrt, wollt ihr tun; der war ein Menschenmörder von Anfang an und ist nicht bestanden in der Wahrheit, denn Wahrheit ist nicht in ihm. Wenn er die Lüge redet, so redet er aus seinem Eigenen, denn er ist ein Lügner und der Vater derselben. 45 Weil aber ich die Wahrheit sage, glaubet ihr mir nicht. 46 Wer unter euch kann mich einer Sünde zeihen? Wenn ich die Wahrheit rede, warum glaubet ihr mir nicht? 47 Wer aus Gott ist, der hört die Worte Gottes; darum höret ihr nicht, weil ihr nicht aus Gott seid.
Jesus und Abraham
48 Da antworteten die Juden und sprachen zu ihm: Sagen wir nicht mit Recht, daß du ein Samariter bist und einen Dämon hast? 49 Jesus antwortete: Ich habe keinen Dämon, sondern ich ehre meinen Vater, und ihr entehret mich. 50 Ich aber suche nicht meine Ehre; es ist Einer, der sie sucht und der richtet. 51 Wahrlich, wahrlich, ich sage euch, wenn jemand mein Wort bewahrt, so wird er den Tod nicht sehen[c] in Ewigkeit!
52 Da sprachen die Juden zu ihm: Jetzt erkennen wir, daß du einen Dämon hast! Abraham ist gestorben und die Propheten, und du sagst: Wenn jemand mein Wort bewahrt, so wird er den Tod nicht schmecken in Ewigkeit. 53 Bist du größer als unser Vater Abraham, welcher gestorben ist? Und die Propheten sind auch gestorben. Was machst du aus dir selbst?
54 Jesus antwortete: Wenn ich mich selbst ehre, so ist meine Ehre nichts; es ist mein Vater, der mich ehrt, von welchem ihr saget, er sei euer Gott. 55 Und doch habt ihr ihn nicht erkannt; ich aber kenne ihn. Und wenn ich sagen würde, ich kenne ihn nicht, so wäre ich ein Lügner, gleich wie ihr. Aber ich kenne ihn und halte sein Wort. 56 Abraham, euer Vater, frohlockte, daß er meinen Tag sehen sollte. Und er sah ihn und freute sich. 57 Da sprachen die Juden zu ihm: Du bist noch nicht fünfzig Jahre alt und hast Abraham gesehen? 58 Jesus sprach zu ihnen: Wahrlich, wahrlich, ich sage euch, ehe Abraham ward, bin ich!
59 Da hoben sie Steine auf, um sie auf ihn zu werfen. Jesus aber verbarg sich und ging zum Tempel hinaus, mitten durch sie hindurch, und entwich also.

They made her stand before the group 4 and said to Jesus, “Teacher, this woman was caught in the act of adultery. 5 In the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women.(C) Now what do you say?” 6 They were using this question as a trap,(D) in order to have a basis for accusing him.(E)
But Jesus bent down and started to write on the ground with his finger. 7 When they kept on questioning him, he straightened up and said to them, “Let any one of you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone(F) at her.”(G) 8 Again he stooped down and wrote on the ground.
9 At this, those who heard began to go away one at a time, the older ones first, until only Jesus was left, with the woman still standing there. 10 Jesus straightened up and asked her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?”
11 “No one, sir,” she said.
“Then neither do I condemn you,”(H) Jesus declared. “Go now and leave your life of sin.”(I)
Dispute Over Jesus’ Testimony
12 When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am(J) the light of the world.(K) Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”(L)
13 The Pharisees challenged him, “Here you are, appearing as your own witness; your testimony is not valid.”(M)
14 Jesus answered, “Even if I testify on my own behalf, my testimony is valid, for I know where I came from and where I am going.(N) But you have no idea where I come from(O) or where I am going. 15 You judge by human standards;(P) I pass judgment on no one.(Q) 16 But if I do judge, my decisions are true, because I am not alone. I stand with the Father, who sent me.(R) 17 In your own Law it is written that the testimony of two witnesses is true.(S) 18 I am one who testifies for myself; my other witness is the Father, who sent me.”(T)
19 Then they asked him, “Where is your father?”
“You do not know me or my Father,”(U) Jesus replied. “If you knew me, you would know my Father also.”(V) 20 He spoke these words while teaching(W) in the temple courts near the place where the offerings were put.(X) Yet no one seized him, because his hour had not yet come.(Y)
Dispute Over Who Jesus Is
21 Once more Jesus said to them, “I am going away, and you will look for me, and you will die(Z) in your sin. Where I go, you cannot come.”(AA)
22 This made the Jews ask, “Will he kill himself? Is that why he says, ‘Where I go, you cannot come’?”
23 But he continued, “You are from below; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world.(AB) 24 I told you that you would die in your sins; if you do not believe that I am he,(AC) you will indeed die in your sins.”
25 “Who are you?” they asked.
“Just what I have been telling you from the beginning,” Jesus replied. 26 “I have much to say in judgment of you. But he who sent me is trustworthy,(AD) and what I have heard from him I tell the world.”(AE)
27 They did not understand that he was telling them about his Father. 28 So Jesus said, “When you have lifted up[a] the Son of Man,(AF) then you will know that I am he and that I do nothing on my own but speak just what the Father has taught me.(AG) 29 The one who sent me is with me; he has not left me alone,(AH) for I always do what pleases him.”(AI) 30 Even as he spoke, many believed in him.(AJ)
Dispute Over Whose Children Jesus’ Opponents Are
31 To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching,(AK) you are really my disciples. 32 Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”(AL)
33 They answered him, “We are Abraham’s descendants(AM) and have never been slaves of anyone. How can you say that we shall be set free?”
34 Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, everyone who sins is a slave to sin.(AN) 35 Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever.(AO) 36 So if the Son sets you free,(AP) you will be free indeed. 37 I know that you are Abraham’s descendants. Yet you are looking for a way to kill me,(AQ) because you have no room for my word. 38 I am telling you what I have seen in the Father’s presence,(AR) and you are doing what you have heard from your father.[b]”(AS)
39 “Abraham is our father,” they answered.
“If you were Abraham’s children,”(AT) said Jesus, “then you would[c] do what Abraham did. 40 As it is, you are looking for a way to kill me,(AU) a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God.(AV) Abraham did not do such things. 41 You are doing the works of your own father.”(AW)
“We are not illegitimate children,” they protested. “The only Father we have is God himself.”(AX)
42 Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, you would love me,(AY) for I have come here from God.(AZ) I have not come on my own;(BA) God sent me.(BB) 43 Why is my language not clear to you? Because you are unable to hear what I say. 44 You belong to your father, the devil,(BC) and you want to carry out your father’s desires.(BD) He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.(BE) 45 Yet because I tell the truth,(BF) you do not believe me! 46 Can any of you prove me guilty of sin? If I am telling the truth, why don’t you believe me? 47 Whoever belongs to God hears what God says.(BG) The reason you do not hear is that you do not belong to God.”
Jesus’ Claims About Himself
48 The Jews answered him, “Aren’t we right in saying that you are a Samaritan(BH) and demon-possessed?”(BI)
49 “I am not possessed by a demon,” said Jesus, “but I honor my Father and you dishonor me. 50 I am not seeking glory for myself;(BJ) but there is one who seeks it, and he is the judge. 51 Very truly I tell you, whoever obeys my word will never see death.”(BK)
52 At this they exclaimed, “Now we know that you are demon-possessed!(BL) Abraham died and so did the prophets, yet you say that whoever obeys your word will never taste death. 53 Are you greater than our father Abraham?(BM) He died, and so did the prophets. Who do you think you are?”
54 Jesus replied, “If I glorify myself,(BN) my glory means nothing. My Father, whom you claim as your God, is the one who glorifies me.(BO) 55 Though you do not know him,(BP) I know him.(BQ) If I said I did not, I would be a liar like you, but I do know him and obey his word.(BR) 56 Your father Abraham(BS) rejoiced at the thought of seeing my day; he saw it(BT) and was glad.”
57 “You are not yet fifty years old,” they said to him, “and you have seen Abraham!”
58 “Very truly I tell you,” Jesus answered, “before Abraham was born,(BU) I am!”(BV) 59 At this, they picked up stones to stone him,(BW) but Jesus hid himself,(BX) slipping away from the temple grounds.
