^53 (A)Are you greater than our father Abraham, who died? And the prophets died! Who do you make yourself out to be?”

^12 (A)Are you greater than our father Jacob? ^(B)He gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did his sons and his livestock.”

The Priestly Order of Melchizedek

7 For this ^(A)Melchizedek, king of ^(B)Salem, priest of ^(C)the Most High God, met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings and blessed him, ² and to him Abraham apportioned a tenth part of everything. He is first, by translation of his name, king of righteousness, and then he is also king of Salem, that is, king of peace. ³ He is without father or mother ^(D)or genealogy, having neither beginning of days nor end of life, but resembling the Son of God he continues a priest forever.

⁴ See how great this man was to whom Abraham ^(E)the patriarch gave a tenth of the spoils! ⁵ And ^(F)those descendants of Levi who receive the priestly office have a commandment in the law to take tithes from the people, that is, from their brothers,^[a] though these also are descended from Abraham. ⁶ But this man ^(G)who does not have his descent from them received tithes from Abraham and blessed ^(H)him who had the promises. ⁷ It is beyond dispute that the inferior is blessed by the superior.

⁵ To them belong ^(A)the patriarchs, and from their race, according to the flesh, is the Christ, ^(B)who is God over all, ^(C)blessed forever. Amen.

² who was faithful to him who appointed him, ^(A)just as Moses also was faithful in all God's^[a] house. ³ For Jesus has been counted worthy of more glory than Moses—as much more glory as the builder of a house has more honor than the house itself.

⁷ The Jews^[a] answered him, “We have a law, and ^(A)according to that law he ought to die because ^(B)he has made himself the Son of God.”

³⁴ So the crowd answered him, “We have heard from the Law that ^(A)the Christ remains forever. How can you say that ^(B)the Son of Man must be lifted up? Who is this Son of Man?”

³³ The Jews answered him, “It is not for a good work that we are going to stone you but ^(A)for blasphemy, because you, being a man, ^(B)make yourself God.”

²⁹ My Father, ^(A)who has given them to me,^{[a] (B)}is greater than all, and no one is able to snatch them out of ^(C)the Father's hand. ^30 (D)I and the Father are one.”
