51 Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever keeps my word will never see death.”(A) 52 [So] the Jews said to him, “Now we are sure that you are possessed. Abraham died, as did the prophets, yet you say, ‘Whoever keeps my word will never taste death.’ 53 Are you greater than our father Abraham,[a] who died? Or the prophets, who died? Who do you make yourself out to be?”(B) 54 Jesus answered, “If I glorify myself, my glory is worth nothing; but it is my Father who glorifies me, of whom you say, ‘He is our God.’ 55 You do not know him, but I know him. And if I should say that I do not know him, I would be like you a liar. But I do know him and I keep his word.(C) 56 Abraham your father rejoiced to see my day; he saw it[b] and was glad.(D) 57 So the Jews said to him, “You are not yet fifty years old and you have seen Abraham?”[c] 58 [d]Jesus said to them,(E) “Amen, amen, I say to you, before Abraham came to be, I AM.” 59 So they picked up stones to throw at him; but Jesus hid and went out of the temple area.(F)

- 8:58 Came to be, I AM: the Greek word used for “came to be” is the one used of all creation in the prologue, while the word used for “am” is the one reserved for the Logos.

51 Very truly I tell you, whoever obeys my word will never see death.”(A)
52 At this they exclaimed, “Now we know that you are demon-possessed!(B) Abraham died and so did the prophets, yet you say that whoever obeys your word will never taste death. 53 Are you greater than our father Abraham?(C) He died, and so did the prophets. Who do you think you are?”
54 Jesus replied, “If I glorify myself,(D) my glory means nothing. My Father, whom you claim as your God, is the one who glorifies me.(E) 55 Though you do not know him,(F) I know him.(G) If I said I did not, I would be a liar like you, but I do know him and obey his word.(H) 56 Your father Abraham(I) rejoiced at the thought of seeing my day; he saw it(J) and was glad.”
57 “You are not yet fifty years old,” they said to him, “and you have seen Abraham!”
58 “Very truly I tell you,” Jesus answered, “before Abraham was born,(K) I am!”(L) 59 At this, they picked up stones to stone him,(M) but Jesus hid himself,(N) slipping away from the temple grounds.
