Before Abraham Was, I AM

48 Then the Jews answered and said to Him, “Do we not say rightly that You are a Samaritan and (A)have a demon?”

49 Jesus answered, “I do not have a demon; but I honor My Father, and (B)you dishonor Me. 50 And (C)I do not seek My own glory; there is One who seeks and judges. 51 Most assuredly, I say to you, (D)if anyone keeps My word he shall never see death.”

52 Then the Jews said to Him, “Now we know that You (E)have a demon! (F)Abraham is dead, and the prophets; and You say, ‘If anyone keeps My word he shall never taste death.’ 53 Are You greater than our father Abraham, who is dead? And the prophets are dead. (G)Who do You make Yourself out to be?”

54 Jesus answered, (H)“If I honor Myself, My honor is nothing. (I)It is My Father who honors Me, of whom you say that He is [a]your God. 55 Yet (J)you have not known Him, but I know Him. And if I say, ‘I do not know Him,’ I shall be a liar like you; but I do know Him and (K)keep His word. 56 Your father Abraham (L)rejoiced to see My day, (M)and he saw it and was glad.”

57 Then the Jews said to Him, “You are not yet fifty years old, and have You seen Abraham?”

58 Jesus said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, (N)before Abraham was, (O)I AM.”

59 Then (P)they took up stones to throw at Him; but Jesus hid Himself and went out of the temple, (Q)going[b] through the midst of them, and so passed by.

A Man Born Blind Receives Sight

Now as Jesus passed by, He saw a man who was blind from birth. And His disciples asked Him, saying, “Rabbi, (R)who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?”

Jesus answered, “Neither this man nor his parents sinned, (S)but that the works of God should be revealed in him. (T)I[c] must work the works of Him who sent Me while it is (U)day; the night is coming when no one can work. As long as I am in the world, (V)I am the light of the world.”

When He had said these things, (W)He spat on the ground and made clay with the saliva; and He anointed the eyes of the blind man with the clay. And He said to him, “Go, wash (X)in the pool of Siloam” (which is translated, Sent). So (Y)he went and washed, and came back seeing.

Therefore the neighbors and those who previously had seen that he was [d]blind said, “Is not this he who sat and begged?”

Some said, “This is he.” Others said, [e]“He is like him.”

He said, “I am he.

10 Therefore they said to him, “How were your eyes opened?”

11 He answered and said, (Z)“A Man called Jesus made clay and anointed my eyes and said to me, ‘Go to [f]the pool of Siloam and wash.’ So I went and washed, and I received sight.”

12 Then they said to him, “Where is He?”

He said, “I do not know.”

The Pharisees Excommunicate the Healed Man

13 They brought him who formerly was blind to the Pharisees. 14 Now it was a Sabbath when Jesus made the clay and opened his eyes. 15 Then the Pharisees also asked him again how he had received his sight. He said to them, “He put clay on my eyes, and I washed, and I see.”

16 Therefore some of the Pharisees said, “This Man is not from God, because He does not [g]keep the Sabbath.”

Others said, (AA)“How can a man who is a sinner do such signs?” And (AB)there was a division among them.

17 They said to the blind man again, “What do you say about Him because He opened your eyes?”

He said, (AC)“He is a prophet.”
