⁴¹ You are doing the works your father did.” They said to him, ^(A)“We were not born of sexual immorality. We have ^(B)one Father—even God.” ⁴² Jesus said to them, ^(C)“If God were your Father, you would love me, for ^(D)I came from God and ^(E)I am here. ^(F)I came not of my own accord, but ^(G)he sent me. ^43 (H)Why do you not understand what I say? It is because you cannot ^(I)bear to hear my word. ^44 (J)You are of your father the devil, and your will is to do your father's desires. ^(K)He was a murderer from the beginning, and ^(L)does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. ^(M)When he lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a liar and the father of lies. ⁴⁵ But because I tell the truth, you do not believe me.

⁴ But ^(A)I have said these things to you, that when ^(B)their hour comes you may remember that I told them to you.

The Work of the Holy Spirit

“I did not say these things to you from the beginning, ^(C)because I was with you. ⁵ But now ^(D)I am going to him who sent me, and ^(E)none of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’ ⁶ But because I have said these things to you, ^(F)sorrow has filled your heart. ⁷ Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for ^(G)if I do not go away, ^(H)the Helper will not come to you. But ^(I)if ^(J)I go, ^(K)I will send him to you. ^8 (L)And when he comes, he will ^(M)convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment: ⁹ concerning sin, ^(N)because they do not believe in me; ^10 (O)concerning righteousness, ^(P)because I go to the Father, and you will see me no longer; ^11 (Q)concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world ^(R)is judged.

¹⁷ Therefore, if anyone is ^(A)in Christ, he is ^(B)a new creation.^{[a] (C)}The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.

⁴ But when ^(A)the goodness and loving kindness of God our Savior appeared, ⁵ he saved us, ^(B)not because of works done by us in righteousness, but ^(C)according to his own mercy, by ^(D)the washing of regeneration and ^(E)renewal of the Holy Spirit, ⁶ whom he ^(F)poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, ⁷ so that ^(G)being justified by his grace we might become ^(H)heirs ^(I)according to the hope of eternal life.
