You Are of Your Father the Devil

³⁹ They answered him, ^(A)“Abraham is our father.” Jesus said to them, ^(B)“If you were Abraham's children, you would be doing the works Abraham did, ⁴⁰ but now ^(C)you seek to kill me, a man who has told you the truth ^(D)that I heard from God. This is not what Abraham did. ⁴¹ You are doing the works your father did.” They said to him, ^(E)“We were not born of sexual immorality. We have ^(F)one Father—even God.” ⁴² Jesus said to them, ^(G)“If God were your Father, you would love me, for ^(H)I came from God and ^(I)I am here. ^(J)I came not of my own accord, but ^(K)he sent me. ^43 (L)Why do you not understand what I say? It is because you cannot ^(M)bear to hear my word. ^44 (N)You are of your father the devil, and your will is to do your father's desires. ^(O)He was a murderer from the beginning, and ^(P)does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. ^(Q)When he lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a liar and the father of lies. ⁴⁵ But because I tell the truth, you do not believe me. ⁴⁶ Which one of you convicts me of sin? If I tell the truth, why do you not believe me? ^47 (R)Whoever is of God hears the words of God. ^(S)The reason why you do not hear them is that ^(T)you are not of God.”

Jesus Cleanses the Temple

^13 (A)The Passover of the Jews was at hand, and Jesus ^(B)went up to Jerusalem. ^14 (C)In the temple he found those who were selling oxen and sheep and pigeons, and the money-changers sitting there. ¹⁵ And making a whip of cords, he drove them all out of the temple, with the sheep and oxen. And he poured out the coins of the money-changers and overturned their tables. ¹⁶ And he told those who sold the pigeons, “Take these things away; do not make ^(D)my Father's house a house of trade.” ¹⁷ His disciples remembered that it was written, ^(E)“Zeal for your house will consume me.”

¹⁸ So the Jews said to him, ^(F)“What sign do you show us for doing these things?” ¹⁹ Jesus answered them, ^(G)“Destroy this temple, and in three days ^(H)I will raise it up.” ²⁰ The Jews then said, “It has taken forty-six years to build this temple,^[a] and will you raise it up in three days?” ²¹ But he was speaking about ^(I)the temple of his body. ²² When therefore he was raised from the dead, ^(J)his disciples remembered that he had said this, and they believed ^(K)the Scripture and the word that Jesus had spoken.

Jesus Cleanses the Temple

^12 (A)And Jesus entered the temple^[a] and drove out all who sold and bought in the temple, and he overturned the tables of ^(B)the money-changers and the seats of those who sold ^(C)pigeons. ¹³ He said to them, “It is written, ^(D)‘My house shall be called a house of prayer,’ but ^(E)you make it a den of robbers.”

^14 (F)And the blind and the lame came to him in the temple, and he healed them. ^15 (G)But when the chief priests and the scribes saw the wonderful things that he did, and the children crying out in the temple, ^(H)“Hosanna to the Son of David!” they were indignant, ¹⁶ and they said to him, “Do you hear what these are saying?” And Jesus said to them, “Yes; ^(I)have you never read,

¹⁷ And ^(L)leaving them, he ^(M)went out of the city to ^(N)Bethany and lodged there.
