³⁷ I know that you are Abraham’s descendants. Yet you are looking for a way to kill me,^(A) because you have no room for my word.

¹⁴ The person without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God^(A) but considers them foolishness,^(B) and cannot understand them because they are discerned only through the Spirit.

⁴⁵ Yet because I tell the truth,^(A) you do not believe me! ⁴⁶ Can any of you prove me guilty of sin? If I am telling the truth, why don’t you believe me? ⁴⁷ Whoever belongs to God hears what God says.^(B) The reason you do not hear is that you do not belong to God.”

⁷ Nor because they are his descendants are they all Abraham’s children. On the contrary, “It is through Isaac that your offspring will be reckoned.”^[a](A)

Jesus Goes to the Festival of Tabernacles

7 After this, Jesus went around in Galilee. He did not want^[a] to go about in Judea because the Jewish leaders^(A) there were looking for a way to kill him.^(B)

⁵⁹ At this, they picked up stones to stone him,^(A) but Jesus hid himself,^(B) slipping away from the temple grounds.

²⁶ “Fellow children of Abraham^(A) and you God-fearing Gentiles, it is to us that this message of salvation^(B) has been sent.

⁴³ Why is my language not clear to you? Because you are unable to hear what I say.

³⁹ For this reason they could not believe, because, as Isaiah says elsewhere:

⁴¹ Isaiah said this because he saw Jesus’ glory^(B) and spoke about him.^(C)

⁴² Yet at the same time many even among the leaders believed in him.^(D) But because of the Pharisees^(E) they would not openly acknowledge their faith for fear they would be put out of the synagogue;^{(F) 43} for they loved human praise^(G) more than praise from God.^(H)
