³⁴ Jesus responded, “Truly I tell you, everyone who commits sin is a slave of sin.^(A)

¹⁶ Don’t you know that if you offer yourselves to someone^[a] as obedient slaves,^(A) you are slaves of that one you obey^(B)—either of sin leading to death^(C) or of obedience leading to righteousness?

⁵ For when we were in the flesh,^(A) the sinful passions aroused through the law were working in us^[a](B) to bear fruit for death.
